AGM-179 Joint Air-to-Ground Missile ( JAGM ) Replacing the legendary the Hellfire missile. In the realm of advanced weapon systems, there arose a need for a new air-to-ground missile that could surpass its predecessors. The story begins with the remarkable minds of Lockheed Martin, a renowned manufacturer known for their expertise in cutting-edge technologies. Driven by the desire to create a weapon of unmatched precision and versatility, Lockheed Martin embarked on a quest to invent the AGM-179 Joint Air-to-Ground Missile, also known as the JAGM. Countless hours were spent in research and development, combining the best features of the AGM-114 Hellfire and the BGM-71 TOW missile to forge a new path forward.

I recently read that the U.S. Army is less than impressed with the JAGM since better options for long-range, fire-and-forget weapons have emerged on the market. The desire for much longer range is not satisfied by the JAGM.

I don't know if it will be any better than the Hellfire. The Hellfire cost half, has similar operational distance, similar warhead, and on top of that it has decades of proven combat experience which has proven its reliability. I can't see the upgrade, to be honest. At least not against the Hellfire.

I think the idea is that it helps load out and logistics. You can just load up a launcher with these and not care about what targeting is needed for the mission. And as long as you have these missiles in stock locally, you don't worry about having the wrong type.

324,000 $ each ? ouuuch....that's four times the cost of an Hellfire missile. if the missions only request to laser designate targets JAGM is not the best option. How can they justify such cost when, for example, MBDA UK is producing the Brimstone missile with similar Millimeter wave radar/SAL guidances and similar flight performances for nearly half the cost per unit ? hoping this cost will decrease to the extend that more and more are produced and are progressively replacing the hellfire (and for the sake of tax payers).

@@snsproduc Depending on the altitude, 30 miles is not over the horizon. It takes a height of only 200 meters (600 feet) to see at 50km/30mile distance. An Apache can fly low, lift for a few seconds to 200-250m acquire and release and drop down again out of any kind of air defence. This is the most effective way to take down airdefence other than a HARM missile or simple drones.

@@robertjohnston8531 I was referring to the attack helicopter/drones, but you do make a point, as now even the Hydra (APKWS)70mm rockets being guided now, which works well for unarmoured targets. The reason I was talking about longer range weapons, was the amount of helicopters lost in Ukraine by both sides, even fighter 😳 fell to the manpads, and we are not talking about big SAM systems. I remember the 1973 October war, when the Egyptian Airdefence forced the IDF to get to lower Altitude and then they were attacked by Shilka's and Sa-7s.
