OKAY! For those who are STILL confused. Here’s the explanation: What is he’s essentially describing, is using a compressor to compress the low end then using an EQ to boost what was compressed. They are talking about using specific plug-ins, but that is the absolute basic explanation of what this trick is.

If I'm being honest, in this day and age you dont need parallel compression in modern hiphop/edm/pop production. The reason being that most drum samples these days are all ready heavily processed that you dont need parallel compression to raise the low end or hype the drums up, they usually all ready are. Parallel compression makes sense when you're working with sampled drums off 1970's funk and RnB records which usually had a very linear low end to them (in other words, not alot of low end.) and 80's drum machines. These days, your 808s and kicks from a modern sample pack are usually going to be very hyped, saturated and snappy right out of the pack that you can pretty much set your mixing levels by them.

I'm tired of this kind of click bait. The kind that gives you nothing and then tries to upsell you. Here's the truth. Get a real pair of Pultec EQP-1A's, set the low end frequency to 60hz, turn up the boost to 3 or 4, set the attenuation to about the same amount. That's it. It's not magic or rocket science. Even though the boost and atten should be at the same frequency, an anomaly in the design places the attenuation higher up on the eq curve making it so that the eq boosts the low end and the atten attenuates frequencies further up in the low mids.
@JacobraRecords
@JacobraRecords 10 ай бұрын
THIS! I've tried the Pultec on my mix bus before and it's destroyed my mix by carving the low mids.
@AutPen38
@AutPen38 9 ай бұрын
The quirk of the Pultec EQ is that you can set it to cut and boost at a set frequency (which would just cancel out on a digital EQ) but it actually makes a pleasant curve on that old device, but that's not the "trick" being described here. For 'Low End Theory', the kick drum was heavily compressed with a dbx (in parallel) and then a Pultec was used to boost some of the low end that was lost in the compression phase. It's natural to do this today when we have infinite plugins, but back in the past it was revolutionary to use extreme compression and then a "corrective" EQ when you only had one compressor and EQ machine in your studio.

Interesting from the guy across the table from Pensado.. He makes a few mistakes when commenting on the trick. Firstly there is no 70hz band select on the pultec, he gets it right in the beginning by saying you'd either add 60 or 100, which are two of the four possible selections. He also says, "add it back with a very narrow bandwidth", I imagine he is referring to the Q, (which is described as "bandwidth on the pultec hardware) however on the pultecs bandwidth control only effects the upper boost/cut bands. The low is fixed, so he must've not known this all along, and thought he was using a sharp Q when in fact the bandwidth control was actually doing nothing.

For those who don't know what the 'Pultec trick' is (because this awful video doesn't explain it whatsoever) - The Pultec trick is literally boosting and attenuating the low end at 60 or 100hz by the same values, resulting in an EQ curve with a tighter slope.

Send kick to a parallel send. Compress with dbx160 about -10dB. This gives it a tight punch that is unique to the dbx. Yet, compressing sucks low-end out of sounds, so then you boost the low end back up with the Pultec at either 60Hz or 100Hz, depending on what sounds best in the track. The result is a tight, round, punchy low end. That’s it. All the people in the comments talking about cutting/boosting the same Hz are rookies who are confused and don’t know what they don’t know. This isn’t about Pultec’s EQ curves. It’s about a type of parallel compression.

This is a sorry tale of the dreadful number of hoops engineers used to have to jump through just to get a halfway decent bass sound. The hardware they are talking about (and the associated technique) was great in its day, but even those boxes, with all their pristine circuitry, coloured the sound. The question was, did you like it or not? Now, every EQ is as colourless as you want it to be, whether it's hardware or software, If you really want to go back in time to capture the magic of those old boxes, then by all means pay a large amount of money for one and integrate it into your modern studio. If you have "honest ears" you will quickly realise that almost any modern version will do a better job. Which is why everyone gets that sound now.

It's an old technique that is rarely necessary with today's processed sample packs, but back in the day, hip hop producers could improve the sound of sampled kick drums by compressing them hard with a dbx and then boosting the low end that the compressor typically reduced. It's really as simple as that: Compress hard then use EQ to restore (or boost) the low end. These days we go even further by adding an additional sub bass an octave below, but back in the day it was revolutionary to use compression and EQ on a kick.

beat maker here, just wanna say, mixing isn't too hard but it takes a while to learn it compared to beat making, if you are a beat maker and struggle with mixing... either focus on your beats being fire or take a professional highly rated mixing course so you can learn it the fastest way. However, if you really find it difficult to make a premix sound good before jumping into a full mix, you should stick to beat making for the time being and try to link up with a decent mixer person, because trust me you will be forever trying to learn mixing, and when you do, do you have the ear and environment for the quality of sound you are trying to produce? if not then leave it to the mixer guy or go full time into a professional mixing course.
