That said lewis went out his comfort zone and postponed retirement to face the Great Vitali and once again proved to be the best .There hasn't been any rematch simply cause he retired from the sport and honestly I confidently say that Lewis would never withdraw or fear anyone ,he is a real fighter and warrior .We will never know if Vitali could have won the rematch what we know for sure is that Lewis did not avoid him for fear .

One of my main memories of SKy Sports in the 90s was that they ran loops of Lewis' highlights on repeat. He was a phenom of the era. I used to be such a brat bragging about his KO of Tyson, not realising the difference in timing of their careers. I think his fights against Mcall and Holyfield I watched from the dining room in my hideout behind the newspaper rack. Regardless of won, it would have been a fight worth watching, and would probably have gone down in history as one of the best. One of the most underrated boxes of all time. The guy was totally dominant and couldn't buy the respect he deserved. He just got better and better (Emanuel Steward had that effect on fighters). He was a complete boxer-puncher and a total class act. He didn't show boat and disrespect his opponents (Ali/Roy Jones/Ray Leonard) he just went out there and handled his business. He also became a great commentator post boxing career. I largely agree with your comments. I think Lennox being a Brit (non-rabid, somewhat reserved demeanor, well-spoken) didn't help the public perception of him being an ALL-TIME great heavyweight. And as Lennox wasn't flamboyant like Ali, nor did he have that savage-like attitude (the way Tyson was in his prime), so it simply took longer for the public to finally come to the collective "This guy ducks no one, and beats almost everybody, so he's a legit elite heavyweight" revelation. But, yeah, I do think him being a Brit didn't help the perception of HOW skilled/tough he actually was in the ring. That said, aside from Ali and Tyson in his prime, I don't know that there's been a better heavyweight over time than Lewis.

Lewis showed a lot of class not attacking Oliver McCall in their rematch when McCall dropped his arms and had a nervous breakdown. I could see how the urge to avenge getting knocked out from McCall in their first fight may have made it tempting to try and KO McCall when he became vulnerable. Lewis however, had the perspecacity to realize that something wasn't right with McCall, and showed compassion in not attempting to throw a punch and merely allow the referee to caal the fight. Very class act, and deserving of being a Champion.
@MrVvulf9 ай бұрын
McCall's breakdown was likely a culmination of factors. The two primary ones being drugs, and the loss of his trainer (forced out by Don King). McCall had a very tight relationship with Manny Stewart, his trainer. Don King became worried that Stewart might advise McCall to drop Don King (as any good trainer SHOULD), and so he forced McCall to fire Stewart. Being at the fight without the man who trained him to be there pushed McCall over the edge, in my opinion.

As a Brit I was ashamed that more Brits didn't take him to heart more. I did but like other Brits at the time found myself outnumbered by Brits who had loyalty to Frank Bruno and were so small minded they were put off by the Canadian accent despite the fact that his mum was a proud Brit who raised him there as it was a much better environment for him. Lennox seemed to have a knack of when he'd beat everybody there was to beat he'd fight someone who no one thought had a chance and lose to a lucky punch but when it was a big fight against a feared opponent he always came up trumps. It did end up hurting his legacy though. Still my favourite KO of all time was his 1-2 KO of Rahman. The sound of it is perfect

@@ryanclark9386 True, Lennox was tougher than Vitali and the latter himself was no slouch, Vitali, if I remember correctly, had been a world kickboxing champ before switching to boxing, with a cast iron chin and perhaps the only heavyweight boxer to be never behind on the scorecards in any fight. The fact that Lennox was getting beaten soundly and yet managed to come back strongly in the fourth, fifth and sixth round and cap off his career with a strong, but controversial, TKO speaks volumes about his greatness. As the great trainer, Manny Steward said, Lennox is the LAST TRUE GREAT HEAVYWEIGHT.
