The "Wild West" train is really interesting, you can tell how much love the designer has for the era considering they went with a later styled Ten Wheeler instead of the more obvious American type with the big cinder catcher and ornate paint that's been done so many times.

I don't want to be mean, but seeing what a trainwreck the Orient Express was, and seeing that the level of detail is pretty low to begin with, I think that if that set makes it, the only thing remaining from the Flying Scotsman will be the colour, if even that...
@aaronvancoillie10888 ай бұрын
@@MrSam1er I think there can be made a difference between the concept of the Orient Express, which is not necessarily a specific train, and the flying scotsman, which is. Kind of like Concorde. It's a specific aircraft, and they know that it needs to be realistic if it has to be sold as a lego version of that specific vehicle, otherwise people would not buy it.

One thing Lego trains have been lacking for decades is a small tank engine being sold on its own. All the locomotives are restricted to huge expensive sets. The barrier to entry is way too big. There needs to be something that smaller train fans can afford too! Besides, who doesn't love a small classic steam engine?
@alfonszitterbacke3188 ай бұрын
The sad truth is that Lego treat its own train theme very badly. They do not offer single trains or wagons, although they did this 35 years ago. And i do not see them changing this anytime soon. They only want to sell the 160 $/€ complete sets and maybe some extra train tracks - but that's it. If you want to buy train stuff, go to Bluebrixx. They not only have single wagons etc. but also a water tower, tracks with a bigger radius, steam trains ans much more. They got everything from a tiny BR-89 steam train to a HUGE 5.500 bricks V100 diesel locomotive.
@Stud-Lord8 ай бұрын
Yes it does need the barrier to entry removing
@localsheriff8 ай бұрын
Well... they sorta did that not long ago - 40370 (the anniversary set based on 7810) was exactly that and it wasn't even expensive back then either. Though strictly speaking its layout speaks for a tender so while not technically a tank engine it's easily MOC'd into one. I totally follow you on the 'less expensive, less complex' route for Lego trains though. Having lived through the grey era I find the modern Lego trains somehow over-the-top when it comes to complexity and playability. Don't get me wrong, I love the looks of my Emerald Night and Horizon Express however IMO the older trains still possess a simplistic charm to them that's very hard to beat, plus the older trains run a lot better on complex track layouts. Had TLC designed their train sets reminiscent to those the cost would be considerably lower and potentially initiate higher sales. Then the serious MOCers can create their elaborate builds if they so desire
@ShyGuyXXL8 ай бұрын
@@localsheriff I'm really glad the Steam Engine remake set exists, but unfortunately, it was exclusive to being a gift with purchase. The last small locomotive that you could actually buy was in the My Own Train series back in 2001, over two decades ago. The Winter Holiday Train from 2016 wasn't THAT expensive when it was first released and the locomotive was cute, but it was still a big set with a bunch of other stuff in it. There was the crocodile locomotive, but that was also 100 bucks almost. There's a Bowser train coming up in the lego Super Mario series, but that's also a big set. They make small car sets all the time, but not locomotives. It's a shame.

I love the elevated under rail train the best. Sadly They don't make powerful motors anymore which is why they said they couldn't power the Orient Express. Though you can get knock-off PF motors that have enough power to pull an Emerald Knight still from China. If Lego really wants to go energy efficient and save the planet... they could just go back to 9v motors (No batteries for landfills) and the 9v can power a wide range of motors and now track accessories. They should combine 9v technology with the new blue tooth technology to make the most amazing Lego train system ever. They could offer a wide range of lighting, signals, switches, as well as train motors that all work. However, they need to learn for Hobby Train companies that sell most items as stand alone engines, cars, trackside items.... it's more affordable. More ppl will spend 10-20 a car rather than dropping 200-300 at one time. Small purchases will add up over time faster. This would allow more variety and BL designs if we had proper powering solutions that made Lego Trains closer to Hobby Trains that have 100% of everything powered.
@Stud-Lord8 ай бұрын
That's a really interesting point. Makes a lot of sense
@Bishounen8 ай бұрын
the reason they got rid of 9v was more for safety since lego is a kids toy, of course if they're pandering to adults now I don't see why they can't bring it back
@gkline82888 ай бұрын
@@Bishounen I was around when 9v existed and it had nothing to do with kid safety. They did it to move into PF so they had 1 type to make for mindstorm, technic, trains, and other sets instead of a train, and battery motors. It was about cost savings to them. In fact, I read every post and video at that time heavily in the fight to keep 9v and NOBODY brought up kid safety. You can lick your fingers stick em across track and not really shock you I still run 9v.

I would REALLY like that Big Boy to get made - I've been considering for some time trying to figure out how to do an 8-wheel driver arrangement, and here someone's done the hard work for me! I also would really LOVE to see the Flying Scotsman get made - it would be great to finally see another new color for those train wheels, and I can imagine that a lot of European Railfans-of-LEGO would love to finally see a magnetic buffer in red, what with the last one being a locomotive base that was last produced in red sometime prior to 1990 before being removed from the portfolio entirely between then and 2000. Also, yes, 7,000HP! That's enough to push a stalled freight train up a steep grade with its own train still connected behind it, and with minimal wheelslip! They sure don't make them like THAT anymore!

It is Lego IDEAS, even if they are actually doing trains, it will result in a massive change from the original design, just like the recent "Orient Express". Lego will reduce the details, suck out the designs life and doulbe the price - excellent deal. The Bigboy is a BAD idea, because it will be impossible to use on Legos original train tracks. The "Flying Scotsman", the 2 western trains and especially the "Suitcase Express" are great designs. The train-in-a-box would be 10/10, instant buy.

True that the S1 is long and lean, with one of the longest tenders in the world. But the engine without the tender isn’t and its boiler is quite slender. The Big Boy has both greater weight and volume and is longer without the tenders, so it's down to how you look at it to choose which is biggest along with which you find more memorable

I really want a powered classic locomotive. I am struggling because i am in love with the era and also a huge fan of the Agatha Christie story Murder on the Orient Express. So I am torn- I am likely going to buy the Orient Express, but don’t want to do the work to power it. And I don’t really want a modern powered train if I build a city with the Boutique Hotel, Library, History Museum etc…and my vision of the future has an Orient Express looping the Adventure in Transylvania BrickLink. I just don’t know what my options are. Fun Fact. As an American, I should have an affinity for the Wild West. Its basically our “Medieval”. But I have always been more drawn to the Old World *shrug emoji*

Orient Express had a lot of issues, the original sticker sheet before they corrected it being beyond stupid, and although it can be motorised it's too heavy will burn through them quick.
