Whew. Let's go to some weird places together. Let's talk about my obsession with low fidelity delays, sample rate reduction, and how legendary film editor Walter Murch fits into the equation. It's all about making gaps, y'all.
00:00 Intro/Book Recommendation
02:27 Teletype/JF Patch Setup
08:28 Tyme Sefari Mk2
12:15 The theory explained (kind of)
18:52 Analog Bitcrushing
25:32 Using wacky envelope shapes
28:44 Bionic Lester (switched capacitor filter)
32:15 Where distortion fits in
37:12 Outro Jam
45:00 The jam really hits here. Oh yes.
Hey, if you want to support more fireside chats like this one, use the Perfect Circuit link below to do your instrument shopping. It kicks a small portion of your purchase back to me, and the irony is that I will more than likely use that money to also buy stuff from Perfect Circuit. It never ends.

The book is "In The Blink of An Eye" by Walter Murch. Please attempt to purchase it from a local bookseller before you buy it on Amazon.
Bye!

These long-form explorations are outstanding. I really hope you continue in this style. The WHY behind some of these techniques and the use of metaphor that drives some of the feeling is really powerful. There are enough product demos out there, but this is something special. As a former broadcast editor, the idea of cutting as blinks changed how I worked forever. This-is-kinda-like-that.

Just blew my mind at least twice. sample & hold with both signals at audio rate, while i must've heard of that before, is a great way to lo-fi-itize a signal. And also NOW I understand why Teletypes and Just Friends are coveted.

Just came across this video (even though I’ve seen plenty of your videos somehow I missed this one) and it’s right up my alley. Lovely sounds here. One of my favorite ways of destroying sound is using a quantizer. A quantizer is essentially a bitcrusher but I have rarely seen it being used that way. Also fun to use S&H for bitcrushing. :)

Tyme Sefari Expanders ( ASOT ) are passive and can be replicate in DIY. If you haven't found one yet, I could help in a DIY. Excellent video and will be curious about the book.
@mattlowerymusic
@mattlowerymusic 2 ай бұрын
So, I've seen those floating around, but the thing that always stops me is that you don't get the right channel audio input/preamp with the DIY sot, right? I actually emailed Scott during the garage sale to see if I could get my paws on a NOS expander. We shall see!
@robotopsyrobotopsy6486

@@mattlowerymusic There's also a way to link one ASOT to two TS mk2. You could link with a ribbon cable with 3 connector the PINs marked as ''THUNDER''. So the switch functions would work together. If you know a bit of DIY, the switch section is really simple. You could do an expander with switches only since it's only connecting the ground pin to different pinout. In any case I could help if you want to go through this.

Thanks for the video. I’d like to know if it’s possible to use Just Friends like you do but without the Teletype, ie with a bunch of other modulation sources?? Also, thanks for the distortion tip with Cold Mac! Happy to know of yet another function for mine. Ps: by law, no one should be allowed to own two Tyme Sefari 😂 leave some magic for the rest of us

So, the short answer is “yes”, but the long answer is that you’ll need a device that speaks i2c in order to do so. Ansible and Crow are the only two that I know of. With Ansible you get Kria, Meadowphysics, and Earthsea. With crow you can talk to norns, the computer, or just live code!

But also, fear not, because my next video will most likely talk about Floom mode, which is available sans TT

@@mattlowerymusic thanks Matt. I was referring to not talking to Just Friends in this “hi tech” way, but just with other modules, regular CV. Another way of asking would be, does Teletype open up unique functionalities in Just Friends, not counting this internal, no-cables communication you’re utilizing??

@@mattlowerymusic what I really like is this possibility of having so many different voices coming from one module, in harmony but shifted. I don’t own the module myself hence the curiosity.

Its kind of an interesting concept because when you're reducing the bit depth on a sine wave you're actually adding more in terms of harmonic frequencies and overtones, not less. Depends on what the starting sound is I guess and how complex it is to begin with and how much its reduced to
