The Less than Stellar First Test of the Nimbus Nitro

Some issues going on. Nothing major but enough that continuing to fly it was not an option for me. Didn't want a catastrophic meltdown if things got worse. Couldn't get it to boot into a higher RPM mode either for some reason. More testing required.

When I got help tuning my nitro airplanes I found that even when I thought I had them “dialed in” they were easily 1/4 to 1/2 turn rich still and once properly tuned all around ran 100% better. In regards to this helicopter I’m surprised they designed a belt drive into the transmission with a nitro engine. The torque pulses coming every 360 degrees of engine rotation must be trying to stretch that cog belt like a rubber band.

I designed it, lol. Belts have been used in nitro helis for quite some time, SAB uses them in all of their nitro helis. It works fine. The issue isn't the belt drive, it sounded to me like something spinning and rubbing. Just couldn't see it when inspecting at the field.

I'm miss the nitro experience. Getting fuel got stupid around here. I'm still spitting out crow feathers from saying, "I'll never go electric" Today's fleet consist of a 700, 500 & a M1 All electric... Interesting design on this nitro model. Carry on.

looks like the clutch is grabbing? i would definitely strip the clutch stack down and check it out, that could then cause a vibration which would upset the fbl.

First sort the clutch grabbing, the blades should be barely moving at idle. Then do your flight testing on throttle curves without a governor, the governor can either cause or mask issues. The little engine skip could be a one way slipping, governor issue or throttle servo issue. The shake could be from the blades being too tight, links working loose in the head, feathering shaft bolts backing out, unbalanced blades etc.

I had a nitro car that was always giving me trouble starting up or the engine always needed some kind of tuning. I can imagine the pain is bigger with a nitro heli, when the engine has issues...

The engine seemed to be running fine, the issue is that this is the first prototype of a nitro conversion from an electric model, so issues are bound to pop up lol
