Robodebt was a scheme cooked up by a conservative government who thought people receiving unemployment, parenting and other government assistance payments were for the most part lying cheats. With this bias in mind they took public servants (who are meant to be a political) and took the morality and accountability leash off and told them they had carte blanch to do what was required. The debt was calculated by systems with little protections, built in bias and prejudices. People had their payments docked, they were chased and even had charges. Like the post office debt scandal in the UK people started killing themselves. By this point the government knew they had screwed up so they started the cover up. When the other side finally got back into power we had the equivalent of a special prosecutor DoJ investigation (with no powers to charge, just to compel people to the inquiry) called a royal commission. They found elected official and bureaucrat had lied, destroyed evidence and even when they told people were dying over false debts pushed the accelerator further down. Lots of heads in the sand, lots of wrong doing etc, lots of ill spent money consultants and such. Simultaneously Australia created after years of pushing by the Greens a independent commission against corruption, the NCCP (whos powers to charge had been pulled at the last minute by conservatives and ALP) Who after looking at the evidence a multimillion dollar inquiry had pulled, documenting fastidiously the wrongdoings, declined to investigate citing an existing tribunal who had power over public service officials, and who could charge and lay penalties, was a better forum to punish these people. At which point everyone went, wuh????? Ain't that your point of existence???

Robo-Debt was a automated debt collection for the ATO Australian Tax Office which famously was both super aggressive and incorrect often. It has led to a lot of people ending themselves over the debts. The government of the time was aware of how inaccurate it was as the engineers told them it was a really bad idea and they did it anyway.

it was not from the Australian Tax Office, Centerlink (goverment unemployment pension etc support) setup an automated calculation system to determine if you being over paid and automatically bill you for the money back. Imagine, if you will, a high-rise office, its corridors once bustling with the footfalls of diligent employees, now eerily silent. Our tale centers on John Ipkiss, a C-level executive who has traded human hands for mechanical efficiency, replacing the last janitor with a robot dog armed with a mop. John sits alone in the dimly lit boardroom, sweat glistening on his forehead, his eyes darting in a frantic ballet as he wrings his tie with nervous fervor. "First they came for the secretaries, and I did not speak out-because I was not a secretary. Then they came for the salespeople..." His whispered confessions are abruptly silenced as the boardroom door crashes open. The shadow of a grotesque, pincer-headed figure stretches across his face, heralding an ominous presence. John Ipkiss is about to discover that in the quest for progress, he has sacrificed more than just personnel. He's taken a one-way ticket to a place where the cost of efficiency is his very humanity. He has entered... the Twilight Zone.

Good way: litter robot. $650 for the box, plus ongoing litter and plastic bag costs, buuuut you only have to empty it once a week. I got one about a year ago and it's been awesome. Vintage Story is fun. I can't stand the super-limited inventory though. It's even smaller than Minecraft's already too small inventory. More realistic though. Im currently taking a bachelors in Computer Science and some of the shit we learn, has straight up not been changed since 2001. They also force everyone to memorize concepts and examples that 1. you'll effectively never use again in your life, and 2. are complex and often require learning another concept just to understand what your learning. So maybe its time we move away from the textbooks with bloated word counts and instead start to trim and refine what we teach. We don't have to completely dumb things down, I'm just saying if you can make the same point with less words, then why overcomplicate things.
