Let’s talk about Lexi and Fez, the season finale of Euphoria, and what this means for them moving into season 3. In this video I break down their journeys, their ‘archetype’, how it’s deconstructed. And lastly, give my take on where I want their character arcs to go moving forward.

I never would have expected Lexi and Fez to become a couple, but now that they've teased us, I really like them. Both of them are the most level headed people in the cast, and seem to care the most about Rue. I loved that Lexi got more chances to shine, and I hope that they continue with their unlikely romance.

fez isn’t a “bad boy” he’s one of the most caring characters in the show. i think he’s only a drug dealer because it’s a family business and he cares so much about his family. they’re both sweethearts, but yes he’s probably seen more shit than lexi has.. but i’m also not even sure that’s true with all the addicts in her life.

I think people debating the ethics of the play are missing the point. Every character has unhealthy ways of coping with trauma and this is Lexi's. And if you think Lexi doesn't have trauma, her parents had a rough divorce, her sister made her get into a car with their intoxicated father, she became so scared of her dad she was glad when he vanished, she has had to play therapist to Cassie, her mom's an alcoholic and she lost her best friend to a drug addiction (and blamed herself for Rue's overdose -S2E2).

I think it’s intentional she was ‘forgotten about’ in S1 because the show is from Rue’s perspective and their friendship was distant at that time. I would even say it was putting a strain on them (e.g. lexi give rue fake urine for the drug test)

Good point - now that they have reconciled (which was also one of the most heartwarming moments of this Season), I can imagine them bonding a lot. Specially since both will need a friend - Rue as she gets sober, Lexi as she loses her sister and has to face whatever happens to Fez. Got a strong feeling these could become a trio in S3, since Rue and Lexi are arguably the only people left who care deeply about Fez.

I think the thing some people are forgetting is that Lexi has always been the 'rehab center' for everyone in her life. Prior to the thing that happened with Fez, he was mostly there for HER. At the end of the day, Fez's relationship dynamic with Lexi wasn't all about take, take, take like in literally all of her other close relationships. I don't see the issue with Lexi being there for Fez in a romantic sense. I think some people are too caught up in the faux feminist ideology of women not needing romantic relationships to be whole. Lexi wants that. She's verbally alluded to wanting that and there's nothing wrong with that. Narratively, I understand some people's concerns about his drug dealing 'corrupting' Lexi in some way but something tells me that he's completely done with that life. Yes, Fez is done with that life. To be fair, it's not like he chose that life for himself to begin with. We know what kind of life Fez wants but we also know what kind of crappy cards life dealt him. I wish more people would stop minimizing him to be the 'evil' drug dealer when we know there's much more to him than that. Anyway, I loved the video and your commentary.

I did the exact same thing as Lexi when I was in high school, stage and all. I was always the antisocial one. The first one to speak in class, last one to say anything during lunch. I was frustrated with living in a small town where everyone already had an opinion of me. I had a lot of anger towards my parents. I felt neglected, I felt more mature than both of them and I was getting sick of being a parent to my little brother. And so in my second year, I started on this project. I wrote this spoken-word poetry thing that was several pages long. I sewed three dresses for myself, each one with deep symbolism and velcro in the seams. I signed up for the local talent show and I made sure everything was perfect. And suddenly I was standing in a spotlight on a stage, talking about how my dad had been neglecting me in favor of his own projects and how my mom pushed all these ideas of girlhood onto me. The thoughts I've had of hurting them or burning down my house. The freedom of knowing I was "meant for bigger things". And it felt awful. But that's what people without a voice do; they find one and let all hell loose. They dump their trauma into the void (or comment sections) just to get it out, not even caring about the consequences. But the catharsis makes it all worth it. And I didn't think I'd relate this much to a show like Euphoria

I don't know, I think that there are already significant differences between these two that would create compelling friction. And I'd prefer that more grounded take on it as opposed to Fez going full dark side. What makes me root for them is seeing that they're positive healing influences on one another. Also knowing that Fez is basically a sweet kid forced to do bad things and is no immediate harm to Lexi. Her having to pull Fez from the dark side would undoubtedly involve him being a source negative toxic energy in her life, and I can't see myself rooting for Lexi to put herself through that.
@linglingxu2868

@Val--H 2 жыл бұрын
@@linglingxu2868 I agree. They have both been good for each other up til this point and can continue to be while still being interesting. Which is why I would prefer a fleshing out of the natural conflict that's already present and hasn't been fully confronted and explored, instead of a Fez goes dark and Lexi has to jump into the muck and pull him out storyline.
@leticiapaulina4954
@leticiapaulina4954 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe "dark side" can be interpreted in different ways - I don't fully agree Fez will become more violent, but he does need to grieve Ash. He will be left with no family at all, probably place all of the blame on himself (since he raised Ash basically) and this will cause a lot of turmoil for him. So that could be the "darker Fez" - a Fez that is mourning and struggling, who needs a friend. I do think Lexi could be that friend, as well as Rue - but Lexi has come to know Fez better than anyone else after talking to him every day, morning to night, for months. She is also level headed but daring, as pointed out in the video. Truly rooting for Lexi to be there for Fez as a strong shoulder to lean on, like Fez was for her as she wrote her play.
@Val--H
@Val--H 2 жыл бұрын
@@leticiapaulina4954 True, there are different ways to interpret that. I got the impression the video was speaking of a more aggressive cold Fez, but I could be wrong. Also this is Euphoria, so it doesn't feel far fetched to me that this is the version they'd pull. Losing his brother should have a noticable impact. If not, it makes no sense based on everything we know him to be. But I prefer the less bombastic take. I see an arc of Fez realizing he still has things worth living for and people who care for him (Lexi, Rue and even Faye yup I said it) being so good and quite meaningful if done right . Seeing him mourning and adrift would be sad, but not necessarily toxic and dangerous. The appeal of the pairing for me is they're good for each other in a way neither of them would've predicted, and I'd love it if this was what ultimately resolved the conflict instead of them blowing the foundation of that up unnecessarily to rachet up conflict that's already there. Storylines don't always have to be ramped up to 11 on the dramatic meter to be interesting and hold your attention.

It's like how Suze said to Lexi, "feels like, you've been forced to take care of everyone", Lexi taking care of Fezco is canon, but I don't want her to go through that route, to destroy them both. Like what they did with Jules & Rue 🙌. Eventhough fezco might go a darker path and later find his redemption, but Lexi would be his one that got away. For lexi, he would be her first true love and reminisces the time they had together, be happy and move on 🙌. It would a bit tragic romance for sure, but that is reality bound😢🙌

I think losing Ash will either make him realize that this life isn't for him or fuck him up completely. He is the sweetest but it doesn't erase the amount of suffering that dealing drugs can cause. Now he had to face the consequences. I get that that's what he needed to do growing up (it's not like he could go out and get a job as a kid to raise Ash and take care of his grandma), but after some point it becomes a choice. I hope he will want to change, because that life is not for a good heart like his.

I hear allot of people think theirs an age gap making it problematic. Fez is 19 and Lexi is 17. And he has no clear ill will to her. And Nate saying Fez was in his 20s was clearly an insult to Fez when he was telling Nate to stay away from Rue and Jules. It also lines up given he was a young kid in the 2000s running drugs with his grandma. So it checks out the gap isn’t huge.

Lexi is an apparent “good girl” who reveals her inner dark side through the play and with Fezco’s encouragement, embraces it fully by the end of the season. Fezco is an apparent “bad boy” whose integrity and caring shines through because of how he wants to show up for life - and for Lexi - to the very end of this season. I don’t think a storyline with Fezco’s dark side unleashed is a given. I see these S2 events pushing things to either extreme: A) Lexi fully embraces her cutthroat creative voice (goes “bad”) & Fez decides to leave dealing behind (goes “good”); or B) Lexi internalizes blame for everything that happened + banks a hard left back into “good girl” territory, while a demoralized & broken Fez does turn to his darkness (whether it’s dealing harder or doing.) Personally I find option A far more compelling & a better fit for subverting the good girl/bad boy stereotypes with a message.

I was nodding the whole time and had a chuckle when you pointed out what a Teddy Bear Fezco is, because it's true. Everything you said is everything that I have been thinking of, which makes me happy - because I feel that if so many of us believes this could be a path, then at least to some extent we will be right. I was really, really surprised by this couple - they just immediately clicked to me, and they make sense. Everything from them being a supposed trope, to how their relationship slowly grows into falling in love is a FIRST in Euphoria and breath of fresh air. We can all agree that them singing Stand By Me and holding hands is possibly one of the most romantic scenes in the entire TV Show, its only rival being Jules and Rue - a couple that I also love, but that in comparison, lacks the level of background, development and maturity we see in the few scenes between Fexi, whose relationship has been building up for months of talking to each other every day, morning to night. The fact that they chose this path instead of a more casual fling romance makes me solidify what I think even more. The fact that Lexi cares about Fezco's plans for his future, the fact that we get more insight on how he ended up being a dealer (not by choice) and the fact that we learn he wants out all lead me to believe that it only makes sense to give him a chance out. Why keep him alive this long, otherwise? He could have died in both season 1 and season 2, and while nobody wants that, it would have made sense for his character arc. I would add that Fez has empowered Lexi, just like you said, and there are some symbolisms and easter eggs they throw that further makes me believe in your theory of Lexi being one of the main propellers in Fezco's storyline to come. The parallelism between Fez' grandma's first definition ("a mfking G") and Lexi being called the same during her play ("a fcking G"), the fact that Fezco's affection for her has grown so big Lexi is the only thing he prepares himself to let go of before he decides to take the blame for Ash (when it could have been a montage of his life, it was purely Lexi and a possibility of a future that he hasn't dreamed of before), the name of the episode itself ("All My Life, My Heart Has Yearned For A Thing I Cannot Name" - can this be any more tied to Fexi?) - all of this leads me to think that the intensity they went for with this couple will play a major role in Season 3. Like you said, I am rooting for Lexi to return the favor, and it makes sense in every way - Fez is suddenly left with no family, no income, and grieving the death of his brother. I agree he will likely become a darker person, placing the blame on himself for not being able to protect Ash even if it was a kid taking care of a kid, which will probably trigger a desire to push people away in fear he can drag them down with him. As Fezco said himself, Lexi is fearless - and she has shown it many times this Season - so I think she will return the favor and be that friend Fez needs, a combination of a shoulder to cry on and a slap in the face to snap back into reality. Finally, crossing every frigging finger that the special episode is about them - they have trended everywhere on social media so it is quite possible, but from now on it's only waiting and hoping. But thank you for your beautiful take, it gave me more insight and put into words the frustration I felt about the finale, despite liking Season 2 overall. Awesome video, analysis and deconstruction of the trope!

Without going into inpatient care or any detailed help to to the viewers and nothing came of her breaking into houses being chased by cops all over or with Lauri. It seems focusing on the negative aspects of addiction but not really the difficulty of recovery felt like it was glazed over.

She said in the outro that it wasn’t necessarily her choice to stay clean, that it was just easier that way. That’s because Fez wouldn’t sell her drugs anymore and going to Lauri wasn’t worth it anymore. Im sure we’ll get to see more about what it was like for her to be clean without getting high on Jules as a replacement in the next season.

You make a really good point here. The show is happy to court controversy with the somewhat excessive drug use and nudity without showing the consequences of the excessive behaviour. Therefore it just rings as a one sided talking point and squanders a real opportunity to present something very true and real about the true struggles of those behaviours. This show could do something brave and make some really important prescient points about life today for younger people. Let's hope they lean into these area's in the future 👍👏👏👏

I personally like that her self-confidence came with dating Fez. He is the perfect character to learn from regarding how to speak up for yourself, setting boundaties, he generally doesn't care what others think about him. It is a result of him influencing her in a positive way.

I find it interesting that you bring up Lexi opening up to Fez coinciding with her increased narrative presence. I think the show does this a lot with characters, where when they feel empowered to open or act with the considerable agency they are rewarded by the story with more screen time. I think that's why so many fans are frustrated with Kat getting less screentime, although it makes sense, she was stuck in a rut with Ethan and wasn't being her authentic self the narrative punishes her for this.
@alicepaesleme313
@alicepaesleme313 2 жыл бұрын
except Kat "disappearing" wasn't a narrative choice, it only happened because Barbie Ferreira wanted to choose her character's arc and Sam Levinson wasn't down for that so they fought etc. If it wasn't for that Kat would've had a lot of screen time this season, Sam wanted her to develop an eating disorder and not this whole mess with Ethan
@Black_pearl_adrift
@Black_pearl_adrift 2 жыл бұрын
@@alicepaesleme313 I know what you're talking about but I push back against that a tiny bit. I really don't think there was much elsewhere her story could go. There has been news of a lot of disagreements between cast and the director, Sydney Sweeney comes to mind. The idea that those disagreements behind the scenes directly lead to less screen time is pretty simplistic, and based off of... heresay? I don't doubt its possible, just I don't take that as a concrete reason for an artistic choice that makes sense.
@alicepaesleme313

@@Black_pearl_adrift Him and Sydney disagreed over the amount of nude scenes and not her character arc and that was solved peacefully. Barbie WALKED OUT of set at least two times, so of couse thats the reason why Kat barely had a plot this season. If you think that's just hearsay that's on you (barbie wasn't even on the premiere so it's not lol), but it makes much more sense tham Sam not knowing what do to with her character or whatever, main characters just don't vanish like that unless there's something going on bts. He had a clear vision for Kat in season 2, she would develop an ED like i said

One of the things I don’t thing is emphasized enough is the conversation between Fez and Lexi when they talk about the traits they admire in each other. Like dating is superficial in similar interests in specific things, but that’s never the stuff that makes relationships last in my experience. It’s more of those character traits in a person that draws each other to earth other than anything else. Knowing how a person is, genuinely is more of a draw than anything else a bio can provide. Seeing that play out between the two characters is straight up beautiful because that’s the real foundation relationships have. Like yeah you can hold a conversation with someone with similar interests, but finding an emotional balance goes beyond that kinda thing. Anyway, their relationship is beautiful and grounded and I’m really happy I saw it featured in this show

We see Lexi's dark side come out behind the scenes of the play. The part where she's just as selfish, but up until the play, wasn't allowed to be so. I also think Fez's conversations with Lexi, might have been tapped and this will make a difference somehow later.

I have seen a lot of people online say they were let down by this season, that they liked season 1 so much more. Part of the reason I think is the lack of a proper Kat storyline. For me though it makes perfect sense for this to happen because yes Lexi was basically a background character in season 1 and one of the things I wanted the most by the end of season 1 was to see more of her and this season delivered on exactly that. As a result of another character taking the spotlight other characters inevitably have to be shifted further back from the focus of the show. I’m sure Kat will get plenty of good material to work with next season now that she’s single again

I think next season will start with a time jump when fez is coming out from the prison here me out the next season is not coming out until 2024 the writers will definitely think that there audience have grown so maybe we see these characters grow up and all because rue's drug storyline is resolved and I think after this season rue's character will be a minor one because as you said zendaya is booked and busy and maddie also teased that cassie will be struck in a cycle of abuse so to see this storyline play out in a time skip would actually be more interesting than simply still being a teenage show

@@dw7896 -he no longer keeps drugs in the house -the police had no evidence for Mouse's murder or they wouldn't have needed Custer to wire up and get them some and Faye muddied their case because now they have another suspect which equals increased reasonable doubt for a lawyer to play with -plus Custer (who was the og suspect) is dead and can no longer testify. His testimony was the only thing linking to Fez and Ash or he wouldn't have been wired in order to prove it -Custer dropped a bug in the plant box in ep 7 which will prove that it was Ash who killed him. It will also show Fez attempting to stop him. It will show Fez accepting responsibility for the crime (meaning that he wasn't planning to run or hide the body) and the cops intervened before he could take any real action (such as lying to them and taking the fall for killing custer) -Fez was also co-operative with SWAT and attempted to convince Ash to be to. -it's not even illegal to hold unlicensed guns on your own property in california. They're going to hold something over him to get him to turn on Laurie but in reality the murder charges likely wouldn't get past reasonable doubt.

personally I dont' want to see lexi turn into Fezco's manic pixie dream girl ie there to serve the purpose of helping him. She also has a lot of issues to deal with from her addict father, alcoholic mother and definitely both the fame and the fallout of her play exposing everyone's life. I do agree that I would like to see how the loss of Ashtray affects Fez (as mentioned) but additionally I like to see him pull through it himself as a stronger message. I dont mind seeing lexi help a bit but this growth needs to come from Fez.

I also think that next season will be a test for Lexi’s character as she tries to help Fez overcome grief. Fez will “hit rock bottom”. We’ll see a different side of him, not the Fez we’re used to seeing. In terms of “Fexi”, I don’t think they would plant the idea of them in our heads just to take it away from us. i had some of these exact same thoughts. i’m really interested to see how ashtrays death affects fezco. I do think that it’s gonna make him go down a darker route because as we’ve seen with some of the other characters on the show. the loss of a loved one or the trauma these characters experience usually leads them down darker paths. i do hope we see more of him and lexi whether it be in a special or in season 3 because i do enjoy their dynamic. i’m interested to see if fez DOES go down the path i think he will, if lexi would be willing to stick around w/ him. because she seems like she cares about him but he’s never given her a reason to not be around him, what if in S3 he darkens so much that she loses hope in him or something along those lines 🥺
