Quick note, the description of the video is not accurate. "This morning Donald Tusk, President of the EU Commission, confirmed that the EU had approved the UK's extension. The new extension means that the UK will leave the EU on the 31st of January, with two breaks at the beginning of December and January. In this video, we discuss how this extension works and what it means for Brexit going forward."

@sykessaul123

Coz there's not much point when we can just have renewable instead. The UK has more than enough coastline to be reliant on offshore wind alone nevermind onshore wind, solar, hydro and tidal.
@the33rdguy
@the33rdguy 4 жыл бұрын
WeirdestWolf but wind power kills birds and the batteries to store the energy in are very very bad for the environment. As well making the wind mill makes a lot of co2 never mind the energy to extract the resources from the ground. Nuclear on the other hand is cheep to make. We already have bombs to power them so no need to mine and if you want thorium is very safe to min not radioactive in a way like uranium and doesn't take up much land or kill birds like wind and solar. I'm not saying go 100% nuclear. But look at France their energy is so cheep cause of thorium that they export it to the heavily renewable country Germany.
@sykessaul123
@sykessaul123 4 жыл бұрын
@@the33rdguy You don't need batteries to store electricity, you can convert it to potential energy by pumping it back up hills and hydrodams for when you need more electricity. Wind power kills negligible birds compared to oil spills. And I'm not saying Nuclear isn't good, I'm just saying what's the point paying for fuel when we can have free energy generated by the elements? (of which we have plenty in the UK xD)
@coolpeopleit
@coolpeopleit 4 жыл бұрын
@@sykessaul123 Hydrodams are relatively efficient compared to batteries, but neither of those technologies are efficient ways of storing power, and both do have an environmental impact. The benefits of nuclear is that it is a huge watt per land area production compared to wind and solar which require much more space, and the actual pollution from a nuclear power plant is really low due to the high safety standards surrounding nuclear. It's also a very steady power supply, that can be kept at a near constant rate for an extended period of time. The downsides are that it cannot be turned on and off rapidly, the reactor must be slowly raised to its maximum yield then when the control rods are lowered the fuel may need to be re enriched. There is also a problem with nuclear waste, but waste recycling is much more effective now and passive cooling technology is on the horizon. Nuclear is probably the best way to power cities and big industry, renewables have a place in this infrastructure as a good way to fill the gap, but I wouldn't build my entire energy structure out of them as they have a high carbon footprint in their production and use a lot of land.
@almondandfriends

i would agree that nuclear is better then nothing but until any of the major fusion programs come out there is little to no reason why nuclear power is superior to other green energy options, it has its pros and cons but one of the strangest things ive noticed is people who are pro nuclear power are heavily anti other greener energy as if nuclear power is the only way to save us the birds thing is a bollocks argument though

Garry Morgan They didn't in 2010 so I wouldn't expect them to this time if they get any sniff of power via the Tories. Labour are in truth the only party big enough who can oppose the Tories and even if a quarter of their manifesto is successfully carried out (given the opposition it will receive from Tory, LibDem and other parties opposed to Corbyn) it will transform this country for the better. All the old Liberals have done is join with the SDP of the 1980s (which in turn resulted in their splitting the vote and ensuring more years of Thatcher) to form the LibDems. A bit like the (mainly) ex-Labour MPs who have now, through various and several 'changes', via Change UK - Independent - 'Whatever looks good for Me Party' morphed into LibDem 'MP's' (voted in as MPs on a Labour ticket.)

@Luredreier

@@Septimus_ii *Extreme* left wing, no so much. Only a few of their policies match *our* extreme left, the Red party. I prefer a more center-left approach myself but with a heavy focus on the environment. The UK greens are more similar to our Socialist Left party then to our Greens in some ways, but with a mix of policies from our Red and our Green party and a few unique local twists. I'm kind of surprised by their policies. For instance our Greens *also* want to look at things like universal income. But they don't actually propose to begin *using* it, only to start using pilot projects testing it out and its effects. They're very focused on policies being evidence based and want proper research to inform political decisions. And there's a lot of other things like that. Outlawing private schools? Over here the center left position (not necessarily the *green* one) is to outlaw making a profit on education but to still allow private ones funded by the state in order to advance pedagogy and just in general to give people a bit more freedom in how they deal with things. And so one and so forth... Anyway, I wish the UK lib. dems. took a few pages out of the UK greens book about the environment. But overall they seem like a pretty decent party that's slightly less right wing then our own liberals. Edit: Something I forgot to add earlier. The Lib Dems want to add some *much* needed electoral reforms to the UK, and seem like the only party that does so that I'm aware of. So that's also part of why I think I'd vote for them if I was a UK citizen. Even if they're not a perfect fit with my beliefs they would do much to improve the representation of that half of the population that's currently unrepresented due to the first past the post system... (First past the post tends towards two political parties that while they in a proportional system might fit the preferences of 60% of the voters combined, 20-30% each, they tend to lose support in a first past the post system since voters feel more and more blackmailed into voting for them due to a lack of viable alternatives and the *need* for tactical voting in a fptp system leading to said parties only being equivalent of the values of less then half the population after some time of fptp, even if more might be voting for them at times in order to avoid the one of the two parties that's seen as even *worse* , it encourages people to vote for the party they hate least of the two options instead of the parties they actually agree with, meaning that the values of half the population is in essence not represented neither by a political party with any real power nor in the political debate, now the differences between different parts of the UK has helped the country keep *some* diversity in party politics but you still get a similar effect, in any one electoral seat there's only two real alternatives, or in some cases just one...) Having more parties with real political power would actually reduce the conflict level a bit since there would be more then one path to a majority unlike with the current system where the two major parties hold so many seats that you *need* some of them in order to get anything done most of the time and even when you can't you only have one real combination of third parties that is possible to combine in order to achieve a majority for either of the big parties.

@robin jones The only way that we will get a fair referendum on the EU is by voting for a Labour Government (or at least stopping the Tories and making it a price of any Lab/LibDem/Green coalition or support that they would drop the revoking of A50 as the only option.) Otherwise the people of this country (at least according to the press and social media) will be at each other's throats until we are totally ruined, all for the sake of a crackpot idea emanating from Farage and supported by Cameron only to keep the Tory Party extant. A major condition also has to be the requirement of a super majority if the referendum vote were to be set in stone. The last 300 meters or so is copper cabling. Which is kinda shitty. It really is just an archaic system we use here even for me in the outskirts of london i get 140mbps through BT. But my friends who are on virgin media, have got 400mbps for the past 5 years for the same price im paying for BT -__- . The problem with for profit companies like that is that they wont invest in areas that have no returns on investment. My area doesnt have a decent return on investment for Virgin, so BT has an effective monopoly in the borough. So having government investment into "true" fibre isnt actually a "bad" idea. It has decent potential since many of the ex communist countries like Estonia and poland have MUCH faster internet than us and are drawing a lot of remote workers and server hosting areas because of their governments investment into the country for high speed internet.

Also I don't think uni should be free, we need to reform the university system. There are too many people going to uni for the sake of it and getting worthless degrees when they would be much better off going into apprenticeships. The tax payer shouldn't be wasting money for these people to go uni. Instead, university fees should be subsidised based on economic needs and wealth. Students from wealthy backgrounds who can afford it shouldn't receive as big a subsidy as someone from a lower income family. As I also mentioned degrees should be subsidised depending on what the economy needs. If there's a shortage of nurses, heavily subsidise nursing degrees to encourage more people to take it. If we have a shortage of civil engineers subsidise that so there's an incentive for people to take it. Making uni completely free is a waste of money.

It all sounds very nice (apart from the support for HS2, a sheme that only makes sense if you live in London) until you think about how it could be made possible. Unfortunately this is all cloud cookoo land. There is no way the Liberal Democrats could ever make this manifesto a reality and they know it. Quite simply, this is a pledge list of someone who knows they are not going to be in a position where they will be expected to live up to it. This is a simple tactic to build up the number of Liberal Democrat MP's in the next government rather than being able to form that government. It will also have the unfortunate effect in taking votes away from the Labour party who are the only realistic hope for those wanting to avoid a hard-line or no-deal Brexit.

I'd like to know what the Lib Dems stance on Brexit would be if they managed to get a majority of seats but the majority of UK votes were in favour of pro-Brexit parties ... since with the proportional representation system that they want to introduce the government would actually have a Brexit majority - In that instance would they actually be democratic and proceed with Brexit or become the Liberal Dictators and cancel Brexit anyway?
@Steve-si5nq
@Steve-si5nq 4 жыл бұрын
They would cancel article 50 for sure, because they promised it in the manifesto. And allow me to give the same question to you, what would the brexit party do if they won a majority in parliament despite most people being pro-EU? Why call it a liberal dictatorship? There is no need to be hyperbolic in the comment section or anywhere on the internet.
@DaveMcKeegan
@DaveMcKeegan 4 жыл бұрын
@@Steve-si5nq I'm not suggesting it would be acceptable for a pro-Brexit party to act the same way in the reverse situation, however a few reasons to answer your question The first is that this is a video specifically about the Lib Dems not the other parties Second is the Lib Dems are literally named 'Democratic' so it would be especially hypocritical of them to act in such a way Thirdly is that the Lib Dems are pledging to change the voting system to proportional representation, so they'd then be in a position that they would be introducing a system that would have prevented them from being elected in the first place. I imagine its all hypothetical anyway as it seems unlikely that the Lib Dems will win a majority, more likely form a coalition with Labour or Greens who are both pushing for a referendum rather than a straight cancellation
@Steve-si5nq
@Steve-si5nq 4 жыл бұрын
@@DaveMcKeegan It would be hypocritical for all of the parties, they all claim and are democratic. And the name although symbolically significant in no way would make it more or less hypocritical then if any other party did It. I mean the Brexit party could have been the democratic brexit party and it's action and promises wouldn't cary any more or less weight just because of the name. It just seems to me that you are unfairly picking on the Liberal Democrats here when they would be as guilty as anyone else.

@@DaveMcKeegan I feel you are being dishonest. I hope the LDs have learnt from the disastrous policy of joining a coalition in favour of keeping the parliament hung and only supporting a minority government on a case by case basis. For this to work I'd like to see and end to opposition for the sake of opposition. There is a strong history of cross party collaboration on issues that really matter. I felt that the self-imposed minority government of BoJo was just what the country needed to prevent recklessness, and consequently that the fixed term parliament should remain.
