Yes the proffesional critics low rating is just baffling ...Says more about them......The film is a jewel in every aspect. Every time I discover new details to admire it even more.

I wished for this to be played at my funeral, however, since learning of the orignal piece 'If' sung by Hilary Summer I'm pleased to have changed my desire. I'll blink my eyes and wave my arms.

Why was this great performance kept from from the masses? His greatest work.
@nickleization7 жыл бұрын
Possibly so. The Libertine is a great drama and period piece. The direction is very assured by Dunmore, the cinematography is lush, the lighting is very nice, has great sets, beautiful score and music, contains awe inspiring performances especially from Depp, Morton and Hollander. 10/10

Oh, I don't know... maybe the fingerbanging scene 5 minutes in? I think they lost the G rating, there. Or is it the constant referencing of sex, ejaculation, and female genitalia throughout? I wouldn't worry about the Masses, honestly... they seemed more than happy with 'Pirates Of The Caribbean'.

It's lifted from Nyman's score for an anime about the life of Ann Frank. Here the lyrics have been altered to be more appropriate for a Restoration-period drama.

If, underneath death's cold wing, His restless soul should fly away, Beyond the grasp of fools, T'would meet with the bliss they deny, So stand for him, kneel for him, As he lies low in kneaded clay, Pray for him, who prayed too late, That he might shine on judgement day. Kyrie Eleison. Christe Eleison. Kyrie Eleison. Christe Eleison. O Domine Deus dona nobis pacem. O Domine Deus dona nobis pacem.

"So, there he lies at the last. The deathbed convert. The pious debauchee. Could not dance a half measure, could I? Give me wine, I drain the dregs and toss the empty bottle at the world. Show me our Lord Jesus in agony and I mount the cross and steal his nails for my own palms. There I go, shuffling from the world. My dribble fresh upon the bible. I look upon a pinhead and I see angels dancing. Well, Do you like me now? Do you like me now? Do you like me now? Do you like me... now?"
@Etherdave5 жыл бұрын
Stephen Jeffreys' words, not Rochester's. Depp's performance is wonderful but its historicity is suspect at best. It's more likely Rochester died stubbornly and uncompromisingly impenitent, and his deathbed conversion was simply an invention of his Puritan mother, to salvage Rochester's and his family's reputation.

Now now now, most hollywood films take liberty , but anyone that denies the pure tenacity, and perfection of depps performance is not very intelligent or i argue a human at all. This is shoiod have easily ,EASILY swept the oscars and globes.

A beautiful, moving, emotionally devastating song (especially from Michael Nyman) and, with Hilary Summers' creepy, quasi-castrato delivery, makes a perfect accompaniment to this period drama. Despite his supreme, deliberate, almost supernatural awfulness we still feel pity for him in the end. Wherever the Earl is today he must be laughing his ass off at us. Thanks for posting.

He was nominated for 'Finding Neverland' in 2004, thus allowing the Academy to ignore a film that features a fingerbanging five minutes in. The real question is why Rosamund Pike's performance was ignored as well.

Great performance powerful message to women.....a bloody selfish, self centered MAN breaking the heart & soul of his wife & mother who gave him life....But the smartest woman was the actress who saw him for the junkie that he was & then dumped him!!! However, he mustered his strength & price & spoke for the King...this may have been his final redeeming act!!! !
@Etherdave5 жыл бұрын
Most of this story is conjectural at best, fictitious at worst, and events that are true have been condensed into a far briefer time-period to accommodate drama. The Exclusion Crisis, which was precipitated by a mass anti-Catholic hysteria not depicted here (despite resulting in 22 executions), continued well after Rochester's death in 1680. Charles' brother James, crowned King James II in 1685, was deposed as a result of the crisis just three years later. His successor William III (or II depending on how you look at it) was more staunchly protestant, and thus a more palatable choice to the new Parliament. So you can pick and choose, after all.

Here are the lyrics to this same song titled 'If" for the 1995 movie The Diary of Anne Frank. Again performed by Hillary Summers. Here's a link to her performance. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYWphYqqrNV3jNk. If at the sound of wish The summer sun would shine And if just a smile would do To brush all the clouds from the sky If at the blink of an eye The autumn leaves would whirl And if you could sigh a deep sigh To scatter them over the earth I'd blink my eyes And wave my arms I'd wish a wish To stop all harm If at the wave of a hand The winter snows would start And if you could just light a candle To change people's feelings and hearts I'd whisper love In every land To every child Woman and man That's what I'd do If my wishes would come true That's what I'd do If my wishes could come true.

@khismet2 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. 1984 recording of “God” appears in 1985 film Purple Rain 1993 released 2nd version of "God" on CD Both of these versions were prior to this film and it was most likely composed prior to it's premiere in 1983, as Prince was a prolific song writer and this song was complete before the Purple Rain movie ever released.
