This series is on my priority list for this year and I'm really hoping to love it, but it's great to know more about what to expect. Especially the over-description. I'm not a fan of that either.

Just finished this book and had similar feelings to you. I expected this to blow me away based off the fantasy community’s love. Many of the same people who turned me onto this and got me hyped got me into my all time favorite author/series, Abercrombie/First Law. But… this didn’t hit on all cylinders. Loved the early flashback chapters. Loved the thing with the Barrel. Loved some stuff. A lot though dragged. And yeah that lady who is the missing member of the Gent Bastards I expected would be relevant and I was soooo looking forward to meeting her. That was one of the things even 2/3s through the book I was most excited to learn about in a flashback - maybe seeing Locke meet her. But…. Nope. Like wtf…😮 Edit: anyway, loved the review and I just subscribed.

You have the same experience as me. The long descriptions, my god, bored me to death. And the chopped-up pacing by unnecessary flashbacks, made me put the book down many times. It was a good book but definitely overhyped, to say the least. Unfortunately, the second and third books barely improved these things. Lynch now loves to do flashforwards, so now you have flashbacks+flashforwards. So many gimmicks that don't add anything to the story; the descriptions were toned down a bit.

This makes me sad because personally I think this book is incredibly accomplished, with its dual timeline I did feel the found family was plot line was built up and nuanced. However everyone's reading experience is different. Glad you read and reviewed 😃
