Dr. Joseph Warren, a respected physician and architect of the Revolutionary movement, was one of the most important figures in early American history-and might have gone on to lead the country had he not been killed at Bunker Hill in 1775. Warren was involved in almost every major protest against British policies in the Boston area for a decade, from the Stamp Act protests to the Boston Massacre to the Boston Tea Party, and his incendiary writings included the famous Suffolk Resolves, which helped unite the colonies against Britain and inspired the Declaration of Independence. Yet after his death, his memory faded, leaving his contemporaries to rise to fame in his place, obscuring his essential role in sparking American independence. Following Warren from his farming childhood and years at Harvard through his professional success and political radicalization to his role in sparking the rebellion, Christian Di Spigna’s analysis not only restores Warren to his rightful place in the pantheon of Revolutionary greats, it deepens our understanding of the nation’s dramatic beginnings. This program accompanies the exhibition "Saving Soldiers: Medical Practice in the Revolutionary War" now on display through November 27, 2022.
About the Speaker:
Christian DiSpigna is a historian of early American history and the Chairman of the Dr. Joseph Warren Foundation, a non-organization dedicated to helping preserve Warren’s legacy through education and research. Also a frequent speaker in Colonial Williamsburg, DiSpigna graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia University with a degree in History. After decades of research on Dr. Joseph Warren he authored, “Founding Martyr: The Life and Death of Dr. Joseph Warren, the American Revolution’s Lost Hero” and has given numerous talks on Dr. Warren to a wide array of audiences on throughout the country.

I bought the book as a result of this lecture and am loving it so far, one of the best biographies I have ever read. I particularly love how much details he gave for Dr. Warren's early youth and education, something, though very important, is often glossed over to an extent in biographies

Always heard my grandma talking about him when growing up! It’s a wonder he isn’t better known… he did so much for this country! Maybe someone should come up with a catchy tune like Paul Revere’s midnight ride that also mentions Joseph Warren! Maybe Ken Burns will do a movie about him too !! Just a thought….

When you realize how important the Suffolk Resolves are to the founding of this country, can you imagine what he would have contributed to the Constitution? For decades I've been trying to make sure any time someone in my circle mentions the Sons of Liberty or our Founding Fathers, I can't help but remind them of the one most forgotten, urging them to do some reading about him. And it's almost impulsive at this point, and I'm not even absolutely certain of it's veracity, but every time I see, hear or read about Washington's Spies, I can't help but whisper, "Warren's Spies."

I have the same reverb happening here with the audio issues as well. Not sure I can make the whole lecture with it, unfortunately.

11:40 That was John Adams’ brother, Elihu Adams. Sadly, he died during the siege of Boston. Despite avoiding the pox, he, unfortunately, succumbed to the terrible scourge of dysentery, which struck the entire camp of rebels during the siege.

25:44 When exactly was Elizabeth Hooten Warren’s grave found? This must have been very recently, considering I can’t seem to find anything on the internet about it. Her grave is also not listed on Find a Grave.
