I never felt Claude Rains was a character actor! He always had such presence on the screen! The major stars today couldn’t wipe his boots!

I agree! He was such a great actor. Bette Davis once said she dreamed of doing a sequel to Now Voager just so they could act together. She already had a plot worked out - they would open a clinic together. So sorry that didn't happen.

Claude Rains was wonderful. One of his best performances, for me, was in the film “The Man Who Watched Trains Go By” 1952. After watching many old films on YT etc. that one really sticks in my mind. Obviously we all know Casablanca, Notorious, Lawrence of Arabia etc. We shall probably never see such actors again - Hollywood today is a very pale imitation of the golden years of Hollywood and indeed British films from the 1930s-1970s era.

As a huge Claude Rains fan, I thoroughly enjoyed your video. There were two things I wondered about that I thought you might have encountered in your research. First, I believe there was a story in the 80’s about his grave being robbed and his body stolen. I don’t remember if the case was fully resolved. Second, I wonder if he was a member of the “Raj”, a group of Hollywood Brits who were WWI vets. Ronald Colman was the designated leader of the group. Did you come across any of this information when you were preparing the video?

Fascinating presentation of a brilliant actor. Your voice is easy on the ears. It’s also nice (imho) not to have background music to detract from your charming narration. One suggestion, though: it would be nice if the pictures on the screen would match the narrative. I’m sure that’s not easy, but it would be nice if possible.

For an accurate bio on Rains, i suggest the book you showed the cover of, namely CLAURE RAINS: An Invisible Man by Toby Cohen. available from Amazon. i am now 91 but i published this accurate, detailed bbio in 2023 after years of research and interviews. this details his personal life and marriages, as well as his frustrations within the studio system. it also documents his history on the London stage and several British films. i was an admirer of this unique actor since i was ten years old. and it is a highly factual tribute to his great talent.
