I read in some Boxing History Book that the great Jack Dempsey was quoted as saying after ' Sparring' with Greb ' That i want no part of that S.O.B' if this correct? But one thing u always saw about Greb was ,not only was he aextremely skillful and fast, but he no problem breaking the rules!( So Head and Elbows were all legit parts of his arsenal ). And congratulations to both narrators for capturing the colourful character of Harry Greb and the time period! Harry Greb was the true definition of a Warrior!

An excellent bit of early 20th century boxing history. The middleweight that beat the hell out of Gene Tunney in their first fight for the American Lightheavyweight Championship. A fighter that didn't draw the color line when it came to defending his World Middleweight Title... EDIT: Jesus looking over his boxrec he must've fought Tunney and Tommy Laughran at least a half dozen times each. I lost count.

Great job guys Unfortunately without films of Harry it’s difficult to rank him in my opinion. The newspaper accounts of the day and I have researched them differ even about the same fight. The newspaper men in the the USA , I can’t speak for the rest of the world, were shall we say susceptible to bribery. I know this for a fact as do most sports historians. As far as Dempseys comment, in those days boxers did not criticize or make disparaging statements about other fighters. Read about how Robinson for example always complimented his future or prospective opponents. He always said it’s better to build the gate with compliments. This was of course pre Ali who pretty much started the big mouth thing. It’s known that Dempsey respected Greb and it’s said Doc Kerns , Jacks manager did not want Jack to fight Harry. That being said both Doc and Jack were in the business to make $$$$$ and I believe that if there had been an offer they would have taken it. It’s clear Harry is an all time great and it’s laughable that today’s motor mouths have 30 or less fights against questionable opponents and they are said to be great. Think a guy named Mayweather. In Roger Kahn’s definitive bio of Jack he claims Doc Kerns somehow destroyed all the films of Greb. This may be a stretch but for a guy with 300 or more fights it’s very strange that no films exist when virtually all other fighters of his era are on film. Historian Adam Pollock is doing a 4 volume bio of Jack so he may shed so light on the Dempsey/ Greb controversy. I have read the first volume and it’s fantastic and highly detailed. The second volume is now available on Amazon

Going by boxrec, it appears Jack only defended the title he won defeating Willard in 1919 five times in 7 years until losing it to Tunney in 1926, about a month before Harry Greb died. Greb has defeated four of Dempsey's opponents in those defenses, and Carpentier also wouldn't fight Greb. Jack Dempsey went three years without a fight/defense according to boxrec, from 1923 to 1926. Obviously he wasn't looking for fights and had ample opportunity to make money fighting Greb had he wanted to. I think from the sparring sessions he had with Greb that he and Kearns thought it was a bad situation in that a victory over a smaller man like Greb wasn't worth the risk of what it possibly could do to his reputation and legacy. That's my earnest belief.

I disagree I suggest you read Adam Pollock’s definitive bio of Dempsey. His history is more than what’s on Boxrec. Jack Kearns was “ into” million dollar gates and Greb would not have brought that. And Jack was idle for years because of his feud with Kerns. History of anything is more than statistics. Again, I strongly suggest if you want to be completely informed you read the first two volumes of Adam Pollocks book. The third volume will be out in July or August. These books give a marvelous of the era, the newspaper reports and the importance of boxing in that era I would like to hear your opinion after you read at least the first two massive volumes. Until then I consider you not completely informed.

I'm completely informed on Harry Greb, so when I see people saying they can't rank him because of no film I tend to bristle a little bit. Do you disagree that he beat the majority of the fighters Dempsey defended against? I mean no disrespect to Dempsey, but Greb also defeated Meahan, and Tunney, and in the 2nd Tunney fight its stated 19 of 23 newspaper men at the fight said Greb should have retained the title. For whatever reason, Dempsey and Carpentier chose not to fight Greb. Greb couldn't get a shot at Wilson's middleweight title until he'd already lost the sight in his right eye, suffering a detached retina after his fight in the summer of '21 vs Kid Norfolk. Speaking of newspaper decisions and the writers being subject to bribery (as I guess this is another black mark against Greb along with no fight film?) .....Well, i would contend then the greatest testament to his greatness was what other fighters had to say about him with no reason to be bribed and of whom film does exist kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWemp6JqoJijn8ksi=GD3uZtD6Z4tZG_M3

@@tubeskid I’m not really discussing Greb. I agree he was a force of nature. A great fighter. Dempsey in his prime wins If you are as informed as you say you will want to read the bio of Dempsey by Adam Pollock. They are a boxing historians dream. I’m certain you will find it interesting and learn more about Greb, Dempsey and their era. Let’s talk again when you read them.

@@btrboxingpodcastnetworkAs a former Londoner who has lived in the U.S for nearly 23 yrs&I've followed ' Prizefighting' for Decades..And I heard about Greb many moons ago..But I just found ur channel, but when I saw the title I had to listen to it..And I'm a firm believer these guys were a lot tougher& better! Maybe not as slick, but tougher& harder in so many ways..The Gloves, arena's,the amount of Rnds, and they were fighting so many people who were extremely hungry to earn a living,,So if u were a local Gym champ,it meant something, regional really serious& if u became a World Champ, then u were serious special!

Jack Demsey was the real deal, he was no fraud, like all fighters then and now, money for the champion was the main factor, I loved Harry greb, I agree he was the GOAT, but Dempsey would gain little by fighting Harry. Finally, I met Jack Demsey at his restaurant as a kid, he is and was a great man and fighter, nuff said

Not only did Gŕeb and Dempsey have many common opponents, Willie Meehan had beaten Dempsey twice.

Greb always beat the common opponents much worse than Dempsey had! Bill Brennan who fought Greb 4 times and Dempsey twice; laughed at the notion that Dempsey thought he could beat Greb! And said that all his money would be on the little guy!!!

The only other man who could have won repeatably against "The Pittsburgh Windmill" would've been Sam Langford, "The Boston Terror". Take Sam in 1910 and Harry in 1920, put them in a time machine and there you have the greatest fight of all-time! 🥊 🔥

Actually, he was born Edward Harry BERG and his fathers name was BERG. Harry reversed the letters so as not to sound jewish. So less than 2 minutes in and a factual mistake. Never mind, on with the show, this looks like it will be good !
