I see it as an adagio shopping strategy having more purpose and thoughtfulness than a low buy/no buy system. I agree that the low buy/no buy is a great way to break old habits, especially if being more financially aware is a goal. I would describe the low buy/no buy as good first steps to take to develop a wider understanding of ourselves and how the things we collect make us feel. but just sticking to that can be a trap where then more rules and exceptions get made and then it's back to square one. Much like you did, are doing, the low buy/no buy needs to transition into a more thoughtful and sustainable plan that can be maintained long term. I really enjoyed the points you brought up in the actual cost of an item. All the points you brought up are good ones and point to the larger issues than are often forgotten to the simple expectation of being able to purchase the thing. I'm currently working to avoid some of the pitfalls of thinking I must replace a thing with a new thing when it comes to decluttering my wardrobe. I'll be interested to see how you do with the container concept. You'll have to find a way to do it that makes sense for you as far as budgeting time and energy to do it. In the past when I've done similar projects. I empty out the storage space I'm working on either completely or enough to get a sense of what is there. Then I'll do a quick sort of everything into the keep/toss/needs thinking piles. Then I start Tetrising everything back into the space and doing several revisions of the keep/toss/think cycle until I'm satisfied or I'm too tired to do any more. I think a dedicated beauty strategy update would be cool. I understand the sticker shock of a $300 dollar pillow, I also understand the need of having the right pillow to get good rest. I'm a side sleeper and a couple of years ago I bought a $100 Pillow Cube pillow which does seem to help. I do remember seeing one specifically designed for side sleepers that was around $300. If I ever get that kind of disposable cash, I might look into getting it. I too have been learning to sit with surface discomfort. It's taken me a long time to let the surface discomfort just be there and not soothe it with wasteful retail therapy. It's also open my mind to how I deal with the deeper discomforts I have to deal with and in a strange way let me be more present and in the moment. And as far as encouragement goes, I think you know I'm here for the long haul.

Although i agree that a lot of purpose and thoughtfulness goes into Adagio Beauty, I'm not sure that it's bad to have a set of rules to stick to, either. Everyone is so different. Some people thrive on structure. Others like rules because they simplify an area they don't want to waste mental energy thinking about. For people who enjoy investigating their motivations though, this Adagio Beauty thing is pretty interesting. (At least for me, and apparently you. ;-) ) I'm glad you enjoyed the points about cost. It's still a lesson I'm actively learning, so I hope using the container concept will give me some much-needed visual reinforcement. I have a feeling I'll probably go by category. Doing my whole collection at once would probably overwhelm me (and anyone watching! :-D) Yeah, that $300 pillow was quite a shock. But the value it adds is way more than it cost, so I'd buy it again. I commend you for learning to sit with surface discomfort. It's not an easy skill to learn, but it can yield valuable benefits. As always, thank you for the encouragement, Zach! I hope you enjoy the final concert of your birthday tour!

@TheStyleStumbler I totally agree, rules are useful. But I think the only allow for so much wiggle room before exceptions overtake the bounds of the rule, at least for how I look at them sometimes. It can be a slippery slope back into old habits. I've made more progress investigating my motives. The actual cost of a thing is always more than the price tag shows. I can see how it's probably better tackle your container project in segments. I was thinking of when I've been trying to go through things that have been accumulating in my house for years and nothing has a specific purpose in the moment. Learning to sit in and navigate discomfort has been a d I'm sure will continue to be hard, but I think it's worthwhile. Your encouragement has helped so thanks. 😊

Your explanation was wonderful. In my words, a low buy or a no buy is usually defined at its root as a budget focus. The consequence is usually invigoration with the existing belongings or recognition of avoidance behaviors. Your method seems to be looking towards your own intuition. The consequences for this are to be determined. I have this outlook. Decision fatigue is a thing for me. I’ve started to rotate like I do with clothing. I find changing up storing locations and containers fosters creativity even without a new item. I love the idea of a goal. Derms say to do the same with mini skin targeted goals. This comment is getting long so I’m recognizing I’m excited by this concept.

I'm so glad you're excited by the concept, Jessa - that means I'm not the only one! ;-) Yes! That's something I don't think I placed enough emphasis on: that a low-buy or no-buy often has a budget focus.

Adagio is a perfect description for a mindful approach to a cosmetic collection. A no buy/low buy is an easy way to start. I find myself hearing George Carlin and “Stuff” when I need to recognize the primary issue. I also find learning more helps me achieve my goals. You are so right about “skills” being more important than product knowledge.

Wow, such an excellent annalysis!! You gave me quite a lot to think about. What worked for me was emptying all my drawers and containers and putting all my makeup in a pile. Seeing it all was so eye opening, even more after I started to examine piece by piece and I ended up horrified with the amount of expired makeup I had to toss. I took pictures of everything and every time I felt tempted to buy something I looked at the pictures as a reminder. I took the whole 2022 to fully know my makeup collection and finish my oldest products, in the process I learnt about my preferences, developed a makeup routine based in my personal preferences instead of the trend of the moment and how large I wanted my collection to be. I can be minimal in complexion products, I don't mind using the same foundation/tinted moisturiser, powder and concealer again and again for months, but I'll never be minimal in the eyeshadow palettes and blushes category, I love variety and I get bored easily (that's why I do a project 10 uses) Today I can finally say I'm "healed" from my shopping addiction, I'm much more careful and mindful with my purchases and purchase things I'm totally convinced I'll enjoy plenty. Good luck in your adagio beauty journey! Your videos are so pleasant and inspiring to watch ^^

Thank you for going into such detail about your experience! Taking pictures such a good idea - you've inspired me. As for taking everything out at once: I think I might get decision fatigue from that. But maybe if I do that for each individual category one at a time, for example: all lip products, all blushes, all eyeshadows, etc., it will stay fun but also help me declutter if I need to. I'm so glad to say you've "healed" from your shopping addiction! Thank you for cheering me on. It's lovely to hear from you, Anaclara!

I love your approach and the way you named it! I think being able to afford something is also different from simply having the money on your account. 10 years ago I probably had enough on my account to buy luxury makeup but I could not really afford it because other aspects of my life had priority...paying the rent/mortgage being an important one. Now I am in my 40s and technically can afford it, which still doesn't mean I should buy stuff indiscriminately because ultimately I only have 1 face and I would be creating excessive waste. Finding a good balance is a tricky game though because we all want the new and shiny.
@TheStyleStumbler4 ай бұрын
I very much agree with you: having the money for things is completely different than actually being able to afford those things. And once we CAN afford to buy them, the challenge then becomes more about learning the ins and outs of our actual wants and needs so that we can find a healthy balance. Especially when all the new and shiny things are so tempting. ;-) You seem to have found a nice balance, at least from the parts of your collection that I've seen so far. You seem to prioritize beautifully, Mariam.

Such a great discussion! You brought up excellent points about the energetic, spatial, and mental costs of an item. Things really do cost us so much more than we realize. Your container concept is really interesting. I’m excited to see how it develops. From someone who also sleeps on a $300 pillow, I completely understand your investment. It took me a good few months to get used to this pillow, but now I struggle to sleep on anything else! Investing in a higher quality of life or things that make our lives more comfortable are so worth it. I’m excited to see which foundations you add to your collection!

It was a revelation to realize that stuff seems to cost me for as long as it's in my life. Hopefully I'll develop some useful tools in the future to help with the mental budgeting of my energy and resources. Hopefully the container concept will be a good start. I guess we're in a club I didn't even know existed: the $300 pillow club. I didn't even know something existed until I was desperate enough to look. ;-) It took me a while to get used to my pillow too. But now I wouldn't want to be without it. And I would make the investment again in a heartbeat. Thanks for always sharing such thoughtful responses, Brittany!

@TheStyleStumbler6 ай бұрын
Genau! Wenn man schon seine Favoriten hat, dann sollte man auch die Zeit nehmen um die schöne Sachen zu geniessen. Geteilte Aufmerksamkeit mach nur halb so viel Spaß. ;-)
