As Suicide Prevention Month comes to a close, Yergy and Drewby discuss the life and death of Ian Curtis, who was an English singer-songwriter and musician. He was the lead singer and lyricist of the British post-punk band Joy Division and recorded two albums with the group: Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980). Curtis was known for his bass-baritone voice, dance style, and songwriting typically filled with imagery of desolation, emptiness, and alienation.
Curtis suffered from severe epilepsy and depression and took his own life on the eve of Joy Division's first North American tour and shortly before the release of Closer. While there are some different theories as to why Curtis did it, the general consensus is because of his severely compromised quality of life due to his largely uncontrolled epilepsy. Unfortunately, the advancements of modern medicine had not yet caught up when Curtis was alive, and because of this, medication was virtually no help to him. His death lead to the band's dissolution and the subsequent formation of New Order.
We discuss our own personal struggles with chronic health conditions and the failure of the for-profit health care system in the United States - and how dealing with illness and medical debt can lead to hopelessness and despair, and ultimately taking ones own life in some cases.

I really do agree with you on this...a ton of people would rather have their partner sleep with someone else over having their partner have an emotional experience with someone outside of the marriage or relationship. This is bc sticking your pee into the va-gee doesn't take much effort. Whereas, when you're emotionally cheating on your partner it takes far more planning, it takes time and effort and you really do wonder if the cheating partner used all of the same bs lines on their new piece of ass or if they thought of you a single time while laying down with someone else!!!

Considering the medication Ian was on made any sexual activity impossible but also tooth pain with terrible gingivitis. I’m pretty sure that the relationship was almost totally platonic

As someone who has epilepsy and lives a seemingly normal life, it tears me apart to know that just a few years before i was born in 1983 that Epilepsy could have been such a debilitating disease. I am fortunate enough to have decent medical insurance and access to medical marijuana here in MN FINALLY and am doing well with the regimen of medications and cbd use.

I'm in the UK, fortunately here medication for epilepsy or and side effects of medication for epilepsy are free. I am refractory (body rejects medication and non aura don't have that warning when I'm about to seize) but here in the UK I am still surprised by the amount of stigma epilepsy still faces. Are you drunk? Are you possessed? I get asked all sorts. I have recently had a vagal nerve stimulator implanted so fingers crossed. But depression is still one of the main side affects of epilepsy along with anxiety and insomnia. And sleep is a key thing. 💜

It is really sad. He was wanting to stop his medication all together because it gave him advanced gingivitis and terrible tooth pain and not to mention adverse sexual problems.

Thank you for your compassionate discussion of Ian Curtis. I’m not nearly as informed on Joy Division and Ian’s story as both of you, and so I’ve had lingering questions. We know that the Largactyl overdose resulted in a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and the epilepsy. But … has anybody ever discussed the likelihood that the TBI also caused his mood swings, behavioral changes and suicidal tendencies? Reference: Following his death, friends and family of Michael Hutchence, (INXS) stated that a vicious assault he received in 1992 resulted in the loss of his senses of taste and smell. This apparently made him so depressed that he committed suicide five years later. Twenty years after his death, they revised the story: Michael had refused medical care immediately following the assault. In his autopsy report, the coroner stated that an auto-erotic act gone wrong was unlikely. The report further stated that Michael had serious brain damage that, in all likelihood, caused his mood swings, drastic personality changes and eventual suicide. I often wonder how often TBI’s aren’t taken into consideration with people who have the same symptoms as Michael and Ian.

You both seem well versed with Joy Division, Ian Curtis and what later would become New Order. Great podcast! Informative and addresses the then stigmas of neurological, mind/brain, mental illness if you will, and how relevant this unfortunately still very much is and how society treats such. 😪 Being a fan of Joy Div as well as New Order , you may be aware of an indie film 🎥that came out early to mid 00s called "Control" it is quite decent. We all have our struggles and it is a shame that despite his severe epilepsy he felt to be almost a burden to his bandmates/friends and family as a result of all he was going through physically as very much emotionally 💔 🧠 and seeing only suicide as a solution is tragic. RIP Ian Curtis

Thank you! I've seen clips from Control but I've never actually seen it, same with 24 Hour Party People. I really ought to sit down and watch them when I get time. Ian Curtis' story has stuck with me ever since my teenage years. If only he had been born ten years later, his condition would have been very treatable. It's incredibly tragic

I remember as a young child having to go to the hospital for passing out from Dilantin Toxicity, which seemed to be a common problem with treating epilepsy with Dilantin. I hear that Dilantin is no longer a preferred medication for epilepsy but I do think it was used commonly during Ian Curtis' timeline and if patients aren't monitored carefully Dilantin Toxicity may result. This could cause slurred speech, vomiting, feeling ill, and possible distorted thinking. If Ian Curtis was suffering Dilantin Toxicity during this time that would make his life extremely difficult.

This video/ installment is why you've become my favorite podcast. You handled this case with all the respect that this man, his band, and his tragic suicide deserved. You started referencing The Cure and GG Allin and also some of the subculture cults that have been a part of the Punk/ New Romantic scene and I was gobsmacked. I love your guys stuff----- please keep bringing KZbin out of the box stuff like Ian's story. I think The Crow creator J.O'Barr summed it up incredibly well in his dedication to Ian Curtus when he said " I'd like to thank Ian Curtis for showing me the indescribable beauty in absolute ugliness. Thanks again M.M.

Here's an article written by his daughter about the movie. A divided joy: seeing my father on film The new film about Joy Division singer Ian Curtis has been widely acclaimed. His daughter Natalie can see some flaws - but can't fault the music Natalie Curtis Sunday September 30, 2007 The Observer On a sunny day in August I finally got to see the finished version of Anton Corbijn's Control, a film about the life of Ian Curtis, my father and lead singer of the band Joy Division. Ian committed suicide in 1980 at the age of 23, when I had just turned one. I was involved with the project at various stages of production (the film was based on a book written by my mother and Ian's wife, Deborah, and the two of us visited the set several times) but I had no idea what to expect. For obvious reasons it was strange to watch. In addition to the weirdness of seeing my family made fiction, I found myself distracted by my own memories; not just of things I have been told about my father and events, but of my time on set. In view of such a surreal experience I am perhaps not the best person to write about Control, and what follows is not a review. It's hard for me to comment on Sam Riley's performance as my father. Watching the character of Ian is different to watching the other characters in the film, as I only ever see Ian on screen, and I only know his voice through recordings. It is very odd for me to hear everyone say how much Sam looks like Ian. Sure, he's got the hair and clothes, but I look like Ian, and Sam looks nothing like me! Sam's voice sounds great in the film, but it is not the voice of my father and it makes me feel awkward people saying that Sam sounds 'just like him'. I must say that I do really rate Sam's epileptic fits. Of course I have never seen footage of my father having a seizure, but what is shown in the film is convincing enough to make for uncomfortable viewing. It would have been easy to get the epilepsy stuff wrong, but it is handled with sensitivity. I like that the film does show a human side to the band and, in particular, the way the roadies take care of Ian. I felt real empathy for Rob Gretton, the band's manager, too, as played by the excellent Toby Kebbell. The character of Rob provides Control's humour, so you feel it more when Rob is placed in a difficult position. Samantha Morton, as Deborah, is also very powerful - there are scenes that may have been dreary if not for her passion. My main criticism of the film is that it doesn't go far enough to convey my father's mental health problems: his depression and mood swings are simply not addressed. Given the fervour to discover why he killed himself, this is something of an oversight. Yet the fun stuff, the laughs and japes are also absent. The scenes featuring Annik, Ian's Belgian girlfriend, are inadequate, because they don't show how important such companionship would have been for this lonely, ill man. Annik wasn't excluded from Joy Division in the way my mother was, but she wasn't exactly welcomed either, and that male world of the band on tour is barely touched on. In recent years much has been made of the notion that Ian's biggest problem was the women in his life, when in fact his inability to deal with his relationships, not to mention everything else, was a symptom of his depressive illness. Sadly, the film does little to show this, or how these two women were more aware than anyone of how ill Ian actually was and how hard they tried to help him. Deborah and Annik are lucky as they are at least played by talented actors. Ultimately the character portrayed with the least satisfaction is the city of Manchester. I don't mean specific locations, but the look of the film in general. Where are the dark, empty streets, the Manchester of the Seventies, evoked by the lyrics and music of Joy Division? I don't expect the film to be a history lesson but its glossiness is disappointing. How can an audience understand Joy Division without understanding its environment? Many Mancunians were suspicious from the start: what do Hollywood producers and a Dutchman (who moved to the UK because of Joy Division, but chose to live in London) know about this city of ours? It could be worse - thanks to Salford screenwriter Matt Greenhalgh and the input of all those close to Ian, this story of Macclesfield, Salford and Manchester has not been totally hijacked by outsiders. Whatever my mixed feelings about this film, it holds some powerful pleasures for me: the live performances. Not only do the band look great, their hair and clothes spot on, but they sound like the real thing too. They learned to play their instruments and the songs in the space of a week, and I can't help but be in awe of them for that. Perhaps I've made the film sound terrible when it isn't. After all, this is personal for me: I feel protective of my father, that boy who is younger than me. I have to remember that it's not a documentary, it's just a story - even if it is a different story to the one I've grown up hearing from those who were there at the time. However the film is received, those songs remind me that the most important thing is and always will be the music. Source: film.guardian.co.uk/features/featurepages/0,,2181041,00.html

You have raised a a few really great points. Firstly health care in this country is despicable., If you can't afford the meds and the care you die and even if you get a proper diagnosis, some diseases are very hard to live with. I think Ian suffered severe guilt, severe fear, and s vere exhaustion knowing he had epilepsy and he'd have to live with it for the rest of his life. I think it would've taken a certain kind of person with a certain kind of lifestyle to overcome everything he was dealing with. And a rock star was not part of that equation

@18:50 Ian’s wife Deborah wrote that the first time she saw Ian dance was at a party while still in school when they were 17 and that’s exactly how he danced always. When he smoked weed his dance moves were more exaggerated but he always brought up how people can actually get lost in a trance with music and get to level of highness that becomes spiritual and puts one onto another plane.@21:22 Ian did his homework on how many of the tablets would cause brain damage in case the suicide attempt failed and he wouldn’t be left a vegetable that would have be a drain on his family. This is the reason why the first attempt failed because what he read was an old study @23:47. @25:46 on several occasions Ian tried to push the idea that they would go to America by barge only to be ridiculed. He was worried he would die mid flight This was an important key point into his suicide that for some reason you almost never hear anyone talk about other Debbie herself. Ive always found this to be really curious. She also said Ian was deathly afraid that he’d have a fit and drop his daughter Natalie and so he only held her twice in her life. One of which is the famous photo.Yes young kids aren’t equipped to know the signs until it’s already happened in your life before. @29:06 From the beginning of the band Ian always stated he only ever wanted to cut one record and perhaps one hit single so he could move on and concentrate on being a writer. Nice post I really enjoyed it. Wondering if these facts I stated above that you cut out for time?

At work, allopathy is the remedy and so I've seen the side effects of many prescription drugs. In my personal life the epileptics I know smoke weed. Guess which group has the most seizures. It's a shame that the most effective medicine for epilepsy is illegal in many places and has been for 70+ years. Thanks FDR for the Japanese concentration camps and for making weed illegal.

I don't love when someone says med X physically prevents you from having sex-- sex is not "putting an erect biopenis in a vagina", it's any physical intimacy where you get nekkid and role around with someone. If PIV is super important to a guy, they can strap it on (may sound like a joke but I've experienced this IRL as a female, there's nothing wrong with it). But more commonly you could just do another sexual activity! I know what you mean tho and I see yr trying to be tactful.

It is so sad that he had to take his life because medicine wasnt advanced at the time. I have TBI seizures and the meds that Im on are incredible! I can function almost totally normally, drive, work a very intense and physically demanding job, and do almost anything I want/need to do because of modern meds. This story makes me even more grateful for modern medical technology! And I am adamantly and belligerently against centralized healthcare, however, there has to be a better way to help working class ppl pay for health insurance that is actually good! I am also chronically ill with diabetes and co illnesses resulting from the diabetes. Insulin is INSANELY expensive as well as the syringes, meanwhile, drug addicts are being given free syringes and medical care! Its asinine! But its all by design by medical corporate America to control the population by any means necessary! Even by suicide due to no access to medical care!

I'm glad you mentioned this because I'm a big believer in the ketogenic diet, and I also wonder if it was ever tried on Ian. I do now that despite being invented in the 1920's and having good results over the decades, many doctors at that period of time, and even now, refuse to advise an epileptic patient to try keto. I also wonder if over in England they were more adverse to keto than in the states (which I believe it is more common here in the US to treat epilepsy with keto compared to other countries, but don't quote me on it)

I was huge into 70s to current punk rock as a kid/teenager. I was a teen in early 2000s. Dressing like a Nazi in London 1970s was not to glorify it whatsoever. Punk always had a sarcastic undertone, not really even undertone...it was blatantly sarcastic. Dressing like nazis was probably more about mocking the ridiculousness of the nazis. Trduxing the movement down to an ironic costume.

My labs that I have to have bc of blood clots are a few thousand dollars each time. They draw 15 tubes of blood. My chemo infusions are $25,000 each time I have one. Im in hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of debt bc of all my health issues. My medication alone is several thousand dollars a month. Im in the US and even with insurance we are in a lot of debt.

I’ve need quiet understood the whole taking anti-depressants and anti-psychotic meds for recreational use. Like I get Oxy, Hydros and Fentanyl, muscle relaxers, anti-anxiety needs like Xanax and Valium. Those definitely get you high. But anti-depressants and anti-psychotic? Is there actually a high? If so, what does that entail? Cause I’d think it just fuck with emotions and perhaps induce some psychotic behavior.

Anti-depressants are like speed. Anti-psychotics at a high enough milligram will make you literally walk sideways.
