I think that Valve should try their hand at a controller again, especially with the launch of the Steam Deck and the plans for a dock for it. They for sure would have learned from the mistakes they made in the past and those improvements have already been seen in the controls on the Steam Deck.
@CritStanley2 жыл бұрын
I agree. What I think a second Steam Controller should look like is reversing the positioning of the track pads with the analog stick and face buttons. As in, put the analog stick upper left and face buttons upper right while having the entire lower segment be one large, wide trackpad. One that would register twin inputs.

@@CritStanleyI honesty thought the v2 could just be the steam deck layout. But perhaps it'd be nice to have bigger trackpads to allow more precision and maybe even 6 face buttons and a better dpad for fighting games.
@baconberries809711 ай бұрын
@@SweetToddthat'd be in a perfect world, but a controller like the one you're describing would be absolutely humongous. The reason valve can get that side-by-side design on the deck is because of it's size, where your wrists are naturally facing upwards, letting you go between the buttons and sticks no problem. It also makes articulating your thumb on the trackpads easy. Fitting two sticks, a dpad, face buttons, and two trackpads in a way that they all could be used conveniently on a reasonably sized controller is a serious design challenge. I think the way the steam controller has it now is the best compromise. Though I think it should still prioritize the stick and buttons rather than the trackpads.

@@ge4 Not true at all. I've owned many controllers... and this one has replaced them all. Hell, it's nearly replaced my mouse and keyboard in many cases. I hate trackball, but whatever magic the controller does with its touchpad/trackball emulation is just near perfect. If I tried to play Monster Hunter World without it, it'd be like playing with the controls reversed, because of how much I customized it for everything and just because of how slick the touchpad is. On top of that, while some complained about the track pad size... I actually like it: it's the same reason why when I use my Vive Wands with the analog stick mod... I dare say I have even MORE fine controls than with my Index joystick or Rift joystick. Hell, ANY joystick! It's bigger and just has more controlled range before you hit max. It is a thing you need to get used to, but once you do, it's a breed of its own. It's a real shame it got the fate it did, but once I gave it to a friend who loves trackball mice, they fell in love with the controller and found it equally as impressive. It's neither a gamepad nor a K/M replacement... it's something in between. It's a niche item... and it does what I wanted it to do just right.

Steam Deck proves they don't abandon the fundamental idea of the Steam Controller. It appears the controller part of the Steam Deck is a win-win for Steam Controller fans and regular controller fans. It's an upgrade with 4 back buttons and touch-sensitive thumbsticks that are very useful for gyro aiming for example and the trackpads with pressure-sensitive sensors instead of clickable. Despite the missing dual-stage triggers, I'm willing to take the loss because I'm quite satisfied with what Steam Deck provided. I really hope Valve release Steam Controller 2 with similar upgrades but keep the dual-stage triggers and circular shape of the trackpads.

Only good use I had for the track pad was using it to control the camera in Trucking Simulators. I imagine that this also did a lot for accessibility, allowing for deep customization always helps disabled people and can allow them to play games that they couldn't before. And having a ton of different input options means that it is highly likely that there will always be one that works for someone. I really hope to see further development in this because gaming as a whole has sorta been slacking on providing accessibility options even though it's probably the form of media that is the most capable of doing so owing to it being entirely digital. I also would hope that Valve will take the lessons from the Steam controller and try to make a new better one, I think it was very close to being perfect and would just need a bit more refinement, the kind you can't get on your first try but that feedback from the community can make possible.

I came back to this video after the Steam Deck was announced. Arguably the death of the Steam Controller was needed, as it pushed the industry more forward, and eventually led to Valve implementing it into the Deck, which I believe is where it truly belongs. Having the screen in the controller/console itself ala Switch-style just _feels_ right. It kinda reminds me of how VR works: when you move in a 3D environment, the image on your screen also moves. But if the physical screen the image is on is also moving in tandem with the digital image, it feels much more fluid and grounded. The Switch really gets it right, but it feels underutilized by developers, and the Switch's hardware was low-end when it was released, causing many games on it to be handicapped in performance (such as DOOM). Hopefully, if successful, it will finally bring gyro to the mass market of PC gamers. If it works like how the Steam Controller does, where you can select controller layouts via the community, then I believe we might start seeing more widespread adoption of gyro. I bought a Steam Controller when it was available, and now I've got a preorder in for the Deck. Valve might be hit or miss on hardware, but I feel that this time they hit a home run.
@aberges3 жыл бұрын
Moving the screen is NEVER going to be a good idea. You will miss critical frames due to blurring and re-adjusting eyes at best, dizziness at worst.
@stevethepocket3 жыл бұрын
You make it sound like they're aiming to match the turning speed between the game and real life, like how VR head tracking works-it takes a full 90° turn of the controller to turn the camera 90° and so on. And while that might be amusing for the novelty value, there's no way they're going to do that. It's just too low of a sensitivity to be comfortable, even if you're sitting on a swivel chair or able to also use the stick for wide turns. Not to mention that 99% of third-party games would be emulating the mouse or right stick, so achieving that exact sensitivity setting might be impossible. That said, I remember when I accidentally tapped on a Google Maps link on my iPad and discovered that Street View (in the browser, mind you!) supported real-time camera control via the gyro. It was amusing for a few minutes... and then when I tried to find it again later, I couldn't, which I guess means people complained and they got rid of it. And I don't blame them really.
@HuddyTheBuddy3 жыл бұрын
@@stevethepocket rereading my comment, I can see why it does sound like that was what I was trying to say, however I would agree and say that real-time, real-world corresponding gyro is way too difficult to maintain. My intention was to say that moving a display around in the real world while allowing those movements to correspond in-game feels fluid and right at times, much like how Breath of the Wild uses gyro-aiming when Link draws his bow or is using the Sheikah Slate. If you grab a Switch and use it undocked, moving the screen around while playing without gyro is disorienting and makes playing unbearable, but the minute you translate those movements over to the image/camera it instantly becomes much more playable (especially when your intentions were to move the controller *to* move). But translating the movements 1:1 is usually _too_ much; you'd be asking a lot from the player to twist around like a madman just to play a game and is much better for smaller, more minute movements in-game (like aiming), which gives the player a larger area to work with the gyroscope to correct themselves in real life, while not actively punishing them for over/undercorrecting. This is especially prevalent when you consider that gyro (at least, for now) has the tendency to "misalign" and lose it's tracking, making playing games solely with it a hassle. That's why I feel that it would be best used for smaller movements as Nerrel mentions, using a control style such as flick-stick to compensate for gyro's shortcomings. The way that the Deck seems to get around this is that gyro only works when your thumbs are placed on the touchpads, and shuts off when it isn't in use. This allows it to maneuver around gyro's tracking issue as it basically re-aligns itself when back in use. It’s similar to the Switch where gyro is not actively being used 100% of the time, allowing the player to reposition themselves in-between uses, but giving the Deck the advantage of using it whenever you’d like. This is probably the best use of gyro for the time being. I could also see a 1:1 gyro tracker working for something like VR, where your movements are supposed to translate exactly as planned, and use it in-tandem with other trackers (either inside-out or outside-in) to help make trackers more accurate with a second measurement, or even use it for more body tracking. Maybe they already use this tech in VR; I’m not too up-to-date with that community and hardware, but I could definitely see it getting some use. I would love to see more use and wider adoption of gyro, but the world was introduced to it in such a poor way that most consider it a novelty and don’t want to switch to a new control scheme, and I don’t blame them. But I still think gyro has plenty of potential if done right, which is why I hope the Deck is able to pull it off and get more people used to it. My apologies for such the long response; I tend to get wordy when writing on a real keyboard, but I hope I clarified my stance a bit better.
@stevethepocket3 жыл бұрын
@@HuddyTheBuddy _"Maybe they already use this tech in VR; I’m not too up-to-date with that community and hardware, but I could definitely see it getting some use."_ They do. Although now I'm wondering how doable it would be to acclimate oneself to a game camera that turns further than the player's head does. I imagine it would induce the same kind of motion sickness as "locomotion" (as Valve calls moving with the left stick instead of teleporting around) does at first.

I'm one of the weirdos out there that absolutely loves my steam controller. There's basically no substitute for playing older games with weird control schemes like Messiah or Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, and it actually functions pretty nicely with 6DoF games like descent too because of the back triggers and gyro. On top of that, I once created a profile for Quake 3 Arena that allowed me to switch to any weapon in the game instantly on a whim with the gauntlet selectable with an easy to access back trigger for emergency scenarios, and bunnyhopping is effortless in that game with a gyro. It makes me sad that it had the issues it did, because I feel like with minor tweaks to the design it would be the best controller I've ever used. I really do hope valve comes out with that revision 2, even when I'm not using it for gaming I use my steam controller almost every day to control my PC from a couch or a bed. 3:43 Missing a shot because you pulled the trigger too hard is actually something that happens when firing real guns. The fact that it happens with gyro aiming is kinda cool. In real life, the trick is to squeeze the trigger instead of pulling it. This basically focuses the energy on just the trigger instead of the whole gun. Could you elaborate on your solution of "this can be controlled with a little bit of focus"? I didn't understand that and I'm curious about what you meant.
@dan1RR3 жыл бұрын
Well, probably you create your own mental notes of what hapens, ans offset that to keep the aim fixed, but that requires you to keep adjusting everytime -Since every situation can change the balance in different ways- (so you don't get used to it. And don't do it by muscle memory like every other control scheme), therefore it requires an amount of focus. Kinda like trying to balance a broom by the cable. atleast that is what I got.

Being honest, I'm convinced that the Steam Controller will come back at some point in the future. There is nothing like it. And Steam controller was a triumph in something no one seems to have noticed: Gathering usage data. Huge success. In my opinion this was a beta test all along. Give people new ways to interact with the games, and collect data on how they used those building blocks. What works, what doesn't, what can be improved. And they got a lot of data to work on. Valve is playing the long game here, same with the Steam Machines/Steam OS and even VR considering market penetration. Proton is a clear example. They are pouring some cash into it, when it doesn't make any sense based on numbers. Unless you consider the big picture in maybe even a decade forward. The patent is another clear example, it is Valve recognizing that, depending on the game, you need different physical types of input. Thus making things interchangeable. I bet that, thanks to user feedback, Index controllers are as good as they are today. SC will come back, quite changed, with what it needs, I am sure of it.

@@dlib89 This would be great, the biggest problem (IMHO) of the Steam Controller, was the bad joystick emulation of the right trackpad. @dlib894 жыл бұрын
@@xXYannuschXx in fact, it's not the controller's fault that. Been using mine for years and making all the settings possible. The issue is: normally devs sets the game's xinput with just x and y movement. There is no between value. Check that yourself: Re2 Remake and Re3 Remake makes use of the full analog spectrum over xinput, while most games not. Meaning that mouse simulated over joystick works exactly as a mouse.
@freemansfreedom85954 жыл бұрын
@@alanvolkov6487 If they were drunk on Steam, why not continue to just improve Steam? Why bother making first the Vive, then move to the Index, using the info they got from the Steam Controller and even develop Alyx, when developing HL3 would have been far more profitable? If they were drunk on Steam, why pour resources in the WINE project, as well as in DXVK and Proton, integrating it with Steam? Why pour cash into their streaming tech, when it has been shown that cloud gaming, while it has it's use cases, and will become common, it won't become the main gaming platform? Again, foresight. . VR will improve till it becomes common, as it can elevate a lot of gaming experiences, but for now it is the long game play. Linux in both, desktop and for their cloud gaming service when it arrives. Same with streaming. And in a bigger picture: Their streaming service, play wherever you want, whatever PC game you want using a curated controller that allows you to play ANY game, because you are not limited by your input (like you are to a point with classic controllers) I see that direction quite clear. Just like when people though their new store, Steam, was mostly a whim and a stupid idea, yet here we are that not even the stupid amounts of cash that Epic pours into their EGS can make a dent in them. I'm giving them credit based on the current direction they are taking. They just started before anyone else's.

Wait WHAT?! Explain yourself. I have a steam controller that I love tinkering with but almost never actually use for gaming. I would love to try your setup. I’m a total platformer nut and you have made me extremely curious
@chuzzle444 жыл бұрын
@@brux357 Well, let's see. As the Click is far to stiff for rapid input, you are going to have to turn off "Requires Click" so that the pad responds to touch, much like a touchscreen but with haptic feedback and an indented surface. You need to adjust to either holding your thumb still in the middle(Which may require adjusting the deadzone), or hovering over the pad. Clicking should be used for more advanced functions(Modeshifting, Action Layers, etc...). If you have used a PSP joystick, then adjusting to the sliding motion should be a cinch. If you have avoided using a joystick for platformers, the transition may be more difficult. Unlike the typical D-Pad, there is little to no rocking and absolutely no clicking. You simply slide from one direction to another. This is insanely fast and fluid when you get used to it, and doesn't even wear your thumb out or leave marks like many D-Pads. To help visualize the inputs, simply enable "Controller HUD" from the Steam Overlay ingame. This will show you exactly where you are touching the pad. The pad can be set to either "Directional Pad" or "Joystick Move" inputs, which function more or less identically, but may perform better or worse depending on the game. If analog output is needed, go with some form of joystick. Though there is the "Analog Emulation" option for D-Pad input, it simply pulses the buttons, which may be useful in certain situations, but is mostly useless. The most important thing to remember is that EVERYTHING is customizable. From deadzone size and shape(Yes Shape!), to the way diagonals are handled, haptic response, and even analog response curves, you can tweak to your hearts content. Find a game you like and go at it. I was literally just playing Super Meat Boy with one finger(either thumb) when I saw your post. I have unfortunately have to hit the hay at the moment, but if you have more questions, let me know. I'm happy to help and will respond when I can. Take care.

I really hope something like "Flick Stick" is the future for controllers on console, or at least an option for it. It looks and sounds like a cool, fun, and technical way to play a game. Gyro controls are going to have to be normalized if we're really riding into a future where Xbox, PlayStation, and PC all play in harmony on the same servers. The future of gaming hardware is a bit fuzzy, because consumers don't seem privy to much innovation, but there's a clear path somewhere in there.

My biggest gripe with it at release was the lack of a traditional PC centric setup menu for it. Having to go back and forth from big picture mode is annoying, doubly so when you are sitting in front of a desktop setup and triply so since this was the time I got my first UHD display and dumb picture mode used to force it back to blown up 1080p every time it plopped up with inputs cutting to black and all that other crap. Now love the steam controller, I'm on my second one yet and I have a cubby full of them from cheap sales to hopefully last me until we get something similar. Just hoping Valve will keep the software support for it alive. The crazy amount of features including wired, 2.4G dedicated dongle and Bluetooth for connection options, the amount of sensors and different analogue inputs like two stage triggers and other features crammed into this and AND they still found a way to have a battery mechanism that doesn't require you to have some kind of hunch bag abomination-sack hanging on the back of the controller. All of this for SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper at launch than the latest iteration of the same tired old trash Microsoft has been doing forever now. Valve has been doing amazing work and put in a lot of effort for gamers and gaming as a whole, including their efforts to rid us from Microsoft's capricious whims by providing more incentives for Linux native games and coming up with a viable "emulation" alternative for playing new Windows native AAA releases on Linux. I never expected much from the likes of Epic but it's kind of telling and immensely disappointing that companies which often like to exaggerate how much they value their consumers, like GOG aren't committed to putting any effort into decoupling us from the possibility of a UWP-only nightmare of an OS.

I've had a Steam Controller for years, and I've tried it many times, on and off. There are definite advantages to analog controls in some games, and I find them especially helpful in driving games and some third person action games. I've had a lot of issues, however. The Steam Controller's "mouse" input is usually not accurate or precise enough to warrant switching from, say, an aim-assisted joystick in shooter games. In driving games where you often use the right joy stick to turn your camera, the Steam Controller is also lacking, as the movements, while more precise than a joystick, were very jolty, and if you held your thumb on them for more than a second, would be often be very shaky. Generally, I ended up using the mouse for very broad, fast movements, which, really, could have been accomplished by a normal joystick, and using the gyro controls for precision aiming. The gyro controls were actually very, very good and allowed you to make very good, precise adjustments to aiming in a shooter or just simply moving the camera. The issues start to emerge when you have to start moving the controller around more than you are comfortable with, such as when you need to bounce from precise headshot to precise headshot to precise headshot in a shooter. Sometimes, I would end up with my controller facing a 90 degree angle away from the screen. This did not feel good, but overall, the gyro controls were very nice. I never liked the "d-pad." I never thought that having both a traditional joystick and the sensitive mouse-like joystick/d-pad on the same side of the controller was useful. It felt better to move in a game with the standard joystick, and using the d-pad exclusively as a d-pad was worse than a traditional d-pad since it was so big and required much more thumb movement. This is particularly bad for me as I have baby hands. The clicking feedback also didn't feel as nice as a traditional controller's, and it required much more force to click down. I liked all of the shoulder buttons - even the strange, underneath shoulder buttons. This should become standard on all controllers as it allows easily allows more inputs to be mapped to a controller. Some games on a controller are overcrowded with different controls and context-sensitive functions that they sometimes become confusing. For example, in Half-Life, I liked having one of the underneath shoulder buttons being a jump and another being a crouch - it felt more natural. Probably the BIGGEST overall issue with the Steam Controller is its lack of standardization and the resultant effort has to go into getting it to work comfortably in different games. Grand Theft Auto V, for example, was a nightmare. You'd think that just choosing the "most popular" Steam Controller layout would be fine for most games, but they were almost universally stupid. I don't know how people used them. In GTA, I recall that when I wanted to WALK using a "most popular" layout, I would frequently accidentally start recording the game using some in-game function. How was the layout where you start eating hard drive space whenever you walked the most popular?! Anyway, to create your own layout, you'd have to figure out how you liked to use your Steam Controller. There are many different philosophies in the Steam Controller universe. There are the people who want everything to work as pure, raw, input. There are others who want pure, raw input but no gyro controls. There are others who think that the Steam Controller should just be a clone of a normal controller. Some people think that you should enable gyro controls by holding an aim button. Others think that you should never have to use anything except the mouse-like joysticks and the shoulder buttons, with every relevant control being moved into those control areas. Finally, some people want you to hold the controller with your tongue whilst your eyelashes controlled the joysticks and your nostrils pressed buttons. It was a mess. After some hours of experimenting, you could get a control setup that you would like, but invariably, it would have drawbacks. I put more hours into configuring the Steam Controller than I did actually using it. To me, it doesn't really seen to fulfill its primary purpose - bridging the gap between comfortable, imprecise analog controls and clunky, precise digital controls. The mouse-like joystick will never be as good as a mouse for precision, but it will also never be as smooth or comfortable as a joystick for other purposes. If you're playing a multiplayer first person shooter with the Steam Controller, everyone will kick your ass (even if you get very good at it... as far as I can tell), and if you're playing a racing game against people on a normal controller, everyone will also kick your ass. It's a lose-lose scenario. Its best use case is playing Civilization 5 on a couch, as seen in much of its promotional material. I will note that my opinion on the Steam Controller is subject to change. There are people who seem to have achieved controller enlightenment through the perfect setup and configuration of their Steam Controller for specific games. I have NOT found any such enlightenment, however, and I shall continue to seek it until, inevitably, its drivers are too out-of-dated and unsupported to continue to remain functional.

Gyro should have been their primary selling point. With some practice, it works so well, and can allow for mouse like precision. Also I don't personally experience any fatigue with the paddle buttons, and find them quite comfortable. usually tend to use them for common actions over the face buttons. Never noticed anything bad about the build quality either. It seems just as good as any other controller minus maybe the quality of recent PlayStation controllers. I think its real downfall was the lack of polish with control schemes. Default controls for most games feel pretty rough, and usually take a bit of tinkering for each new game. It is not a plug and play experience, and though I don't mind that, most people don't have the patience to learn a new control layout, and deal with setting it up properly for each game. Most people probably just haven't even experienced the steam controller(or any controller) at their best on pc. I truly think with practice, these new controllers can at least be on -par with m&k, but I don't see them becoming mainstream unless the entire industry embraces gyro.
