TBH, life in the Rebel Navy and Army sucked. I remember how fast they'd lose pilots in the Rebels show. If you didn't die trying to get supplies to civilians, you might die to a spider at Chopper base, or to Mandalorians to access hyperspace lanes. They had to conscript everyday people to perform Spec Op guerilla tactics to topple the Empire. No way they could engage in prolonged battles.

One of George Lucas's primary influences on Star Wars was the Vietnam Conflict. Although it is a fantasy epic, it draws upon real world experiences. Historically, insurgent forces always have taken far many more losses. The average life expectancy of a fighter is short. From the American War of Independence to Vietnam, and Afghanistan (during both Soviet and American occupations) this bas borne out.

Going up against the Empire would be like going up against the US military. Absolutely insane ratio of firepower; you have to either be hidden or right on top of them. IN the American war for independence, we envision guerrilla warfare. it was far from it. It was line infantry formations. The only way to fight and win is to use the same tactics as your enemy because they are the best. In Afghanistan, the Taliban didn't need to win. They just needed to outlast US support. This is very much different if you're a rebel army trying to restore the republic. You need front line troops who will die. Not special forces engaging in guerilla warfare. Both have their uses. But one is capable of freeing occupied worlds with tens of thousands of imperial army soldiers with tanks, walkers, and air support.

Many look at how the Heroes easily escaped the Death Star as proof that the Stormtroopers are incompetent. They forget how easily they took the Tantive IV, that Leia stated that the escape was too easy and they let them go, and that Obi-Wan himself stated their precision of fire was unequaled. Storm Troopers are only a joke when ordered to be a joke. (Well, then or if in an unfamiliar environment against half-height Wookies. Endor stacked the deck against them so hard it isn't even funny.)

@@Homer2137-t9d Compared to Heroes with Plot Armor, maybe. Then again, many see how they were ordered to act in the original trilogy, against foes they were under orders NOT TO KILL, and ignore how they cut through the rank and file rebels like a scythe through wheat, and then in newer material have them underperform. News Flash; if they were such bad shots, then by the law of averages alone Han, Luke, Chewie, and Leia would have died on the Death Star. You don't have that many shots in the air and all miss by accident; they were missing deliberately, and doing so took skill.

Great video, Alan. When reflecting on the dynamics between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance, we can actually see, in the real world, this dynamic happening. I do not hate the United States, I am a proud American, but I can justly appreciate how the United States seems like an evil empire to the Taliban (a Rebel Alliance) within Afghanistan. In addition, there is indeed a correlation between young men, their testosterone (fostering passion), and militant action. As we get older, that testosterone begins to dwindle but reflection and insight grow. Which is greater? Who is to say? Dead men have been piled upon both hills.

I’d love to see a series based on the Mid Rim Offensive. Follow a company of rebel infantry as they start out riding high, winning many early victories. Then as the show progresses we start to see morale and combat effectiveness degrade more and more. Lack of supply and attrition would take a huge toll, plus the conflict could get a lot more grey as civilian populations the rebels expected to join their cause would take up arms against them and fight for the empire. Both sides would be forced to commit extremely morally questionable acts to win. So much potential for a good show there.

To put it simply, if you were not a main or primary character in the story, you had no plot armor. The Galactic Civil War then becomes much more dangerous and the life of a Rebel pilot and soldier gets a lot uglier. People rag about how flimsy TIE Fighters are supposed to be, but X-Wings, Y-Wings, etc. in the movies get 1-2 shotted. Go ahead and rewatch the Original Trilogy, Rogue One for those air and space battles. It's not like the Star Wars video games where the Alphabet Fighters got big fancy shields and can tank immense damage. You can even go back to Revenge of the Sith and watch Republic and Separatist starfighters battle each other. The Clones people love so much were getting 1-2 shotted out of space just like the Droid fighters do. For the beginning of your video, you forgot to mention the Rebel troops aboard Leia's ship at the start of ANH. Granted it was a lost cause to stop the Empire from taking control. They were captured by a Star Destroyer, Stormtroopers were boarding, and Darth Vader was right behind them. They were screwed. That said, in a deadly assault, you saw the Stormtroopers capably clear through the breach and beat handily the Rebel troops. Survivors surrendered. Darth Vader didn't even have to bring out his lightsaber. If you were not somebody with the name of Luke Skywalker, Wedge Antilles, or some hero like that, the Galactic Empire is a much more terrifying enemy.
