The Life Of A Dump Truck

This video gives you a brief overview of what our Kenworth T-300 Tri-Axle dump truck goes through, delivering gravel on a typical day of work.
I worked on getting all the footage and camera angles over the past summer and we edited down about 4hrs of footage to make this video.

I work at a Kenworth dealership and some of our customers have these T 300 with PX-8 315 hp with Allison trans, doing a test drive is a blast, they feel like a sports car compared to the T 800's. nice work with the camera, great shots!

Great video. Well done. And to all those people dissing the automatic, have you tried it yet. I tell you after sitting in city traffic all day my left leg is dead at the end of a day. Sometimes for driver comfort I wouldn't mind having an auto just to not have to use the clutch.

Cool video. Shifting gears can be fun but myself think automatics are the way to go. A guy I once worked for bought a new Topkick tandem dump with an automatic and I thought he was crazy. It didn't take long to change my mind after driving it.

@peebsb Yup the auto trans is great, we will never buy a manual again, all our Internationals are automatics as well. I bet all the people bashing the auto on here have never tried one because if they have they wouldn't be saying what they are. The auto trans now for big trucks shift better under full load than some cars I have driven. There is a huge paving company in my town, well over 100 tri-axles, they are all automatics.

Cool video! I'm driving tankers now, but ran a tri-axle for 4 years prior. I miss it and am actually putting in an app today at one of our local companies to try and get back into it again.

ive been learning to drive a dump truck one has an 8 speed and one has an automatic both 2016 peterbilts and I must say I feel like the automatic isway hard for me to control at times u gotta give it a lot of gas when your loaded and iono I prefer the stick the auto only kicks ass in the morning traffic

look at the shadow at 3:30. the camera is mounted on a skid steer which is on a trailer which is behind the truck :D

A good dump truck driver also has to be a great multi-tasker, that's for sure. Like when the boss calls you and asks..."where are you"?? "I'm almost there", I reply. "Well forget that. We need a load of 3 inch minus over at pit #2. So head on over there". "OK but what do I do with this load of drain rock on board now"? "Ahhhh, ask (the pit boss) George when you get over there. He'll find someplace for it. He's in the loader"... So when you see dump truck driver's talking either on their CB radio or their cell phone and they're proceeding straight down the highway SAFELY at speed and in traffic and doing a great SAFE job, there's a real "multi-tasking professional" behind that steering wheel who just happens to be a great SAFE gravel hack driver to go along with that. He (or she) has to be...

@1toomanyhobbies Thanks! It can get a little difficult but its not that bad. You just have to make really wide turns so sometimes you have to wait for traffic on the other side of the road to stop.

@JimHowDigsDirt Thanks! Yea I agree automatic is the way to go. Its definitely different, you need to get used to it and kind of learn how to drive again, so you don't smoke your breaks.

ryan meana take a course and get your class 1, then your options are open. I had to work on a pipe crew for a year before they put me in a dump truck , I just kept asking and finally a position opened up. After a couple years I jumped up to a tractor trailer hauling gravel. Glad I went for the class 1. Good luck

Thanks , yeah i planned on a Class 3 license before but bcause my dad wanted me to help him working in flatbeds i took a Class 1 course trying to apply but they need 2 yrs experience

Automatics work in places where you are flat land they are horrible where you need the control of speed on grades. Automatics you have to depend on your foundation brakes way too much. The only reason why companies buy automatics so they can hire less skilled drivers for less money. A good driver makes 25 to 28 dollars per hour a tandem axle dump truck makes 100 dollars per hour. A dump truck driver must beable to shift a 8-13-15-18 spd if you can't your not working simple as that.
