A side note for these Heroes, specifically for men like Dale. The Dutch people have honored the memory of these soldiers in ways that I've never even seen their own people honor them. They have adopted a grave, many families adopt a deceased Soldier and caretake their graves. I have a friend in the Netherlands that showed me this. It was one of the few times I have been impressed to the point of tears with the way a people treated the dead of a country that was their allies. God bless the Dutch people.

I love the first person story telling as well. But I also need some hype mixed in. Reenactments help describe the mission if they dont get carried away. Then add in Real raw footage of ww2. That's the best but only so much exists. Lastly put the deep voice of an awesome narrator on top & Wala... u got an epic double you double you two documentary to enjoy!

I am a retired veteran who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. While we dealt with stuff, I have never felt that I can be equated to the vets of WWII. These soldiers... were soldiers. God speed brothers. Note to the creator of this doc, incredible work.

In the UK, we thank the Canadians for everything they did for us during the two world wars. They sent their brave young men to fight and help protect the British Isles, they supplied the wheat and grain to feed us and made supplied the medicines we needed into the 1960s. It wasn't always a "mutual" aid. The UK bled Canada dry for men and materials during WW1. I wont go so far as to say "raped" but it came close. Canada teetered on the brink of collapse by the time the war ended.

I concur with your sentiment. It's an absolute privilege for Britain to have such a superb ally as the Canadians. Their contribution during WW2 was absolutely pivotal to Britain being able to stay in the fight, without Canada, we would undoubtedly have been defeated by the U-boat menace. The RCN underwent a massive expansion, they were essential to the successful outcome of the Battle Of The Atlantic. Nothing but the greatest admiration and RESPECT for the Canadian's. Long my our close friendship persist, it's something to be immensely proud of. The German's wore a belt buckle with, 'Gott Mitt Uns,' stamped on it. The British never needed to worry if God was actually on our side, we had the Canadian's in our corner!

God bless these men and their ilk. We need to snap out of it and stop playing whatever games the few with near absolute power make us play. Almost no one would actually hate their enemies if they met outside war, but we allow a handful of bad people to rile us up and convince us that the next man wants us dead and our children dead. My granddad was in the Danish resistence during the war. after the war ended he sailed unto the sea and dropped his guns in the ocean because he didn't want it in the house where my dad and aunt was growing up. he never talked about what happend during the war or what he had to do. I later found out that the Danish resistence museum had a lot of information about him. and he is core part of the musuems exibition about the resistence. I am proud beyond words.

I am an American, and I tell Grandchildren about experiences of the brave men and women who found their countries occupied by the Nazis. I keep guns , and I teach my kids the danger of guns and fire arms safety and their benefit in the right hands , like your dad who was willing to pick them up and use them against people like the Nazis . The end really teared me up. As long as I can remember, every memorial day in my village in The Netherlands, we have had the veterans that helped put the evil away. I have thanked them every time. I will never stop doing that. Even after the last Veteran has crossed, I will honor them by laying down Dutch tulips at their monument. Forever grateful!

With that said, I don't recall ever meeting one of them before and added to that, I know too little about what has happened there. When I was in school people didn't talk (much) about it. With that I was talking about the veterans that helped driving the nazis away from The Netherlands.

I used to think veterans didn't like to share their dark war stories because they wanted to spare civilians of the horrors of war. But after watching this I now believe that even for the toughest of men, these memories are too painful to recount. Seeing these warriors get emotional multiple times over taking enemy soldiers lives or seeing comrades fall, truly eye opening and we can not be grateful enough for their sacrifice.

Sadly there are a lot of Commonwealth and Free Forces that need to be covered in maybe two to three films and you will need to put a few American A listers into a lead role for the film to do well. (Which was the earlier British Film Policy). The 1969 Battle of Britain film which was a technical accurate classic just about broke even. Why the film did not use American A listers to act as RCAF pilots I do not know, it was technically correct for them to do so as many Americans did volunteer for the RCAF. They could have shown the hazards the American volunteers endured to become members of the RCAF and the Eagle Squadrons in training, sadly they did not become operational till after the battle was over in September. Whether they were relying on Christopher Plummer to carry the day who knows but it got slated by American critics.

I'm a New Zealander. We didn't hear anything about the Canadians, as they were in different places from our servicemen and women during the war. This documentary brought home to me the horror of war. They were just kids, same as the Brits, Aussies and ours, and they did things and saw things that nobody should ever have to do and see. And it affected them their whole lives. I met a member of the Scottish Black Watch on the bus not all that long ago in Brighton uk, he was a really old geezer, i wish i had time to hear his story but i didn't, i thanked him for his service and fist bumped him. i wish i stayed to listen to him. listening to stories of war and what happened, what men did, the sacrifices they made makes me even more thankful for the freedom we have today. if it wasn't for them and their heroic efforts and sacrifices, to give up their own freedom we would not be here today. thank you all for your service, for past present and future.

I have never commented twice. But ii feel the need to now. I have read countless books, seen countless documentaries and videos and watched plenty of movies about the second world war, and I have never before been so moved as I have been with the story you've told here. If you don't feel emotional as you watch this, your not human. The Greatest Generation seems too little to describe the men who freed Europe and Asia from unimaginable tyranny, but perhaps it is the best way, less is more. May their souls rest in peace and may they know, that even 80 years on, we are still grateful. This a brilliantly made documentary. Everyone should watch it. Thank you again.

So happy to have seen this, when I grew as a kid in the 90's and 00's we have told and taught a lot about WW2, we would always hear about the British and the Americans, for some reason the Canadians aren't mentioned that much, what a incredible story, what a heroes these men were, they deserve much more credit.

My great grandfather fought in world war 2. I'll never forget any of the incredible stories he told me as a small child before he passed. These Blackwatch men are absolutely incredible. My Father was a Veteran of WWII, born in Vienna, he was smuggled out by the underground and within a month of arriving in the United States, enlisted to go right back and fight the Nazis out of Austria. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant, and interrogated German officers until the end of the war. War was much more personal then, not like todays modern warfare where a button is pushed miles away from its target, in WWII, you often saw the faces of those you killed and those who were killed around you. WWII heroes were as genuine as war will ever see again. This program really brought the personal aspects of WWII to light.
