Its quite a fascinating tale. I hope one day we see a spin-off series of the Mad King and Robert's Rebellion. What's most interesting about his story is that he wasn't actually born mad and there wasn't one thing that lead to his descent, it was a chain of events and unfortunate coincidences that lead to this. Sure you could say Aerys was a emotionally unstable but many people are like that and they don't go mad.

Aerys is mad because his lineage is full of multiple instances of incest. Rhaegar, Viserys and Daenerys are Aerys' children. Rhaegar died young, so we don't know if he would go mad later on in his life. Viserys had always been a lil' mad. and as for Daenerys... She's pretty keen on burning cities to the ground sometime in season 6-7, then it went to burning her enemies with dragon fire.. ... ... OMG IS DAENERYS GOING MAD?

I think Joffrey is worse. Imagine what he would do if Margery had that many miss carriages. I definitely wouldn't stay faithful. Furthermore, beheading Ned was his idea of mercy and he also killed him to torture Sansa. Joffrey would've done a lot more terrible things if it weren't for Tyrion and Tywin. If Joffrey didn't have Tywin's support the seven kingdoms would've rebelled faster than they did against Aerys. Joffrey was a terrible human being ever since he was very young but Aerys' madness was because of circumstances.

In a dance of dragons in a Bran chapter, wasn't it sorta hinted at that Aerys may have been visioning the army of the dead and the wights when he was going insane? Why he wanted to burn them all? I don't remember exactly but Bran said that it made sense that he would say that if he saw them.
