Filch was one of those characters who wasn't properly fleshed out by J.K & that's unlike her. People used to call my grandfather grumpy, mean, nasty etc etc; in a way he was all of those things but if you got to know him and if he opened up to you he'd be a different man altogether. I realized he was like that because of all the pre-conceived notions people had about him and all he wanted was friends. A scene where Harry conversed with Filch( maybe in detention) where Filch opened up to him would be good or at least Filch could've helped in the final Hogwarts battle willfully and enthusiastically. No one is only black or white & Jk made Filch to be solely black along with a handful of other characters like Umbridge.

Not really. Although they hated muggles & mudbloods, there's no mention that they hated squibs since they aren't unaware of the wizarding world like muggles or didn't steal their magic like mudbloods. It's likely that they saw squibs as marginally more valuable than muggles and mudbloods. Even if they didn't like squibs, you have to remember that Filch is different as he knows all the secrets of the castle, something that would be useful to the death eaters. Even after that, Snape was put into the headmaster position and since he knew who Filch was he saw no reason the get rid of him plus there's the fact that he knew all the castle secrets and that they were both part of the Order so he saw value in Filch to some extent in that way as well.

When I was younger, someone (I can't remember who) once told me that Mrs. Norris was in fact Argus Filch's wife and that she had been Transfigured into a cat. I initially believed this but, nowadays, I doubt it being true since a talented witch or wizard could have easily returned her to her original form. Granted, this would be an interesting concept to see. 5:28 So, a mass murderer breaks into the castle and they send the *only* member of staff (or person inside of Hogwarts in general) that cannot use magic to search the three areas that are more spread out and inconvenient to get to than any other by himself? Sounds like an ingenious plan, Dumbledore. Maybe you should have sent him into The Forbidden Forest as well just in case Sirius Black was hiding out in there. Just an idea though.

JKR: Don't you - well. This is how I explained it to myself at the time, and this does sound glib. Don't you think it would be quite a Fred and Georgeish thing to say in jest, and then see this thing transform? MA: Yeah. JKR: Can't you just see them? ES: But the exact word combination? Is that just a lot of luck, or Felix Felicis - JKR: Or, the map helped. MA: Yep, yeah. You can see them sort of answering and joking with each other - JKR: And the map flickering into life here and there when they got closer and closer, and finally they hit upon the exact right word combination and it just erupts.

If only he were magically gifted? I can’t say I agree. Yes he was brave, but the tragedy wasn’t that he was not magic the tragedy was that he couldn’t accept himself. I mean most of the human race isn’t magic and they get along fine. Instead of torturing himself by getting a job constantly being reminded of what he couldn’t have, he couldn’t have done something with his life in the muggle world. Be a doctor, or a writer or a fireman or an astronaut or whatever. The fact he showed bravery in the end shows how he waisted his life. Self pity never helped anyone.

I've been looking for this comment. When I first saw it, I couldn't help but agree. Years later...I still agree. Also, I'd like to add onto it and throw this theory out. What if when everyone is gone for the Summer, Filch does his job, but he also dresses up as if he was a student at Hogwarts? Like...wearing a homemade robe and an old scarf of whichever house he cleans up in and secretly carrying around a hand-carved wand that does nothing, but be there for aesthetic purposes. Same with carrying a regular broom and pretending that Mrs. Norris is his familiar. Just living in this illusion, that he was one of them- while also probably indulging in alcohol and other substances, as well, in his downtime, just to keep said illusion going for just a little longer. As well as taking down and putting away all the talking paintings, covering the talking statues and capturing all the ghosts, so no one will ever know what he does when he's alone. And at the end of the Summer, he just sits in his room with his cat, still wearing his costume...and he finally cries. Like...just cries. Because he knows that come the next day, he'll have to go back to being a Squib, once the REAL Wizards return and be forced to stand by and watch them enjoy the very world that he may live in, but can never truly be a part of... It's like that one person, who as a child, wanted to have an extraordinary career, when they finally became an adult, but couldn't cut it for legitimate reasons and rather than just move on, still clung to their dreams, taking whatever they could get, that resembled the life they wanted, but couldn't have. Examples of this concept would be a failed actor working at a dinner theater restaurant, because Hollywood rejected them- or more commonly, a failed athlete being a High School Coach, because they couldn't cut it in the big leagues. And God forbid they ever have any children, of their own! Wow...and just, like that, I've made myself sad- and quite possibly anyone who reads this, who ever had an abusive parent who indulged in illegal substances, because of this concept- or WAS one because of it, before finally getting help. Either way, you know who you are...

I wonder if Argus was as loyal to Umbridge or was he playing her? I am sure Argus was loyal to Dumbledore. Dumbledore gave him a job and treated him with respect. Even if they had opposing views, I am sure they were friends. I think he was a "double agent" like Snape was. Argus Filch is almost as fascinating a character as Snape was. He fought hard against Voldermort during the battle. I remember when Dumbledore asked Argus to find the Fat Lady when she left her picture. Argus found her in less than 5 seconds. That was amazing! I think Filch was a smart man, even if he did not have any magical powers.

You know what I wondered? If Filch's cat Misses Norris was a human being? Or an animigus? Arugus treats that cat way too personally, like a wife. Could Misses Norris be a witch who was married to or in love with Argus. Maybe she was recruited by Voldermort but she said no. I think Voldermort hated Squibs and he told her to leave Filch. Crazy suggestion here: What if Draco was infected with Lycanthropy and transformed when he was confronting Dumbledore on the Astronomy Tower. You can see the full moon partially obscured by the clouds. Things would've been completely different if Draco transformed into a werewolf, maybe right before Severus was about to cast the killing curse on Albus.
