I just re-listened to the audio books and thought exactly the same. I doubt Dumbledore or most of the professors would have allowed that kind of punishment on their watch and since Filch apparently only came to the school after Molly and Arthur went there, it wasn't that long ago either. Unless, he was basically more or less identical to the former caretakers, all just different versions of the same "power"/character. Also, while Dumbledore certainly employs some weird people (Lockhart, Moody etc) and lets the Triwizward Tournament take place, where people are in quite a lot of danger, employing someone like Filch who wants to torture people seems a little off - unless he basically can't get rid of him anyway.

I thought of the same thing. This theory makes a lot of sense, except that he wanted to learn magic. If he can't do it because magic is kind of breaking the rules, and he hates rule breaking, then why would he want to learn magic? @@sierrawilkinson Good question though perhaps it is a result of other personality traits and/or beliefs of those witches and wizards powering him affecting his personality and behaviour. In my experience at least a strong leaning towards adherence to the rules tends to be accompanied by a worldview of a just and fair world in which one can accomplish things they want through honest hard work without needing to find ways to exploit things so perhaps that rubs off on Filch thus his turning to study to solve his perceived weakness IDK.

I think it's more of a familiar-type thing between them. After Norris got petrified, Filch became unhinged (more so than usual at the very least.). It probably disrupted the balance of energy that generated him, provided that J's theory is accurate.

Corporal punishment existed in British schools up until 1986, only a few years before the time of the books. I doubt the wizarding world, which is not known for its forward thinking or reform, would have stopped chaining students up decades before the muggle world.

I would contend that in this case. First off, it would be very much in character for Dumbledore to take pity on a squib and offer him the opportunity to continue to be a part of the magical community in an environment where his efforts are appreciated, (at least by fellow staff), and if he was generated by the inhabitants of the castle, why can't he use magic now seen as he (if all caretakers are poltergeists of order) could do it before? As for why squibs can be at Hogwarts? Because whereas Muggles does not have a drop of magical blood in their bodies, squibs does, so even if they don't have magical ability, they have a genetic, innate affinity with magic that Muggles lack, allowing them to see things Muggles can't, even if they too are in some ways limited in what they can perceive.

@@shaydshani First off, no, old pure-blood families did not _send_ them out into the Muggle world, they simply disowned them, and less judgmental wizards often felt it was almost kinder to _encourage_ squibs to go into the Muggle world, rather than to live among wizards; a world in which they would always be seen as second class citizens. Also, while squibs do not possess magical ability, they have more magical blood in them than a Muggle, which is why they have such an innate ability to communicate with animals, (such as Filch and Mrs. Figg), an ability otherwise found in wizards like Newt Scamander. They can also see past Muggle-Repelling Charm, although a Muggle cannot, which is how Filch can go around Hogwarts and see the school for what it really is. There is no credence to this particular theory.

Except Filtch is actually a squib. Dumbledore just offered a job to him because he pitied Filtch. Since squibs born in magical families like the Blacks and the Weasleys, are looked down upon. Right, like I can buy Flich being a poltergeist that isn't self aware but not if he actively works against who/what he is. It adds to much demension to the character for me to be sold on it. It's a fun theory though. And I think Flich being a squib is probably more exactly opposite of a being that is manifested by magic.

Argus: The name of a giant in Greek mythology said to have 100 eyes. Argus aided by Ms Norris keeps a close eye(s) on the school/students, which is mentioned in the video. Filch: British slang meaning to steal/take without consent of the original owner. So I think Argus was "Hired" as punishment for trying to steal something from Hogwarts, but this theory is cool too.

I could see both Peeves and Filch existing as almost the students superego and id, and keeping both around highlights how being overly concerned with rules makes you kind of lousy to be around, but also how ignoring the rules at every turn and can lead to mayhem. This way, the students develop in a more middle zone, wanting to be neither the superego Filch or the reckless Peeves.

Remy Bartels Yeahh he is actually a Squib. Squibs can decide to stay in the Wizarding community, but they are looked down upon or go stay in the muggle world and live normal muggle lives. He decided to stay and Dumbledor gave him a job at Hogwarts. There’s a KZbin video about Squibs

In the muggle world corporal punishment in private schools in Scotland was only banned in 2000, 2 years after Deathly Hallows takes place. It was only banned in state schools in Britain in 1986 (5 years before Philosopher's Stone).

Corporal punishments, in some circumstances is still allowed in America, though it usually requires parental approval. About 30 years ago, it didn't even need that. Caning is still used in Hong Kong, as a punishment to breaking laws. Even of young people.

I think Filch, and as an extension his position, is an extended test on the students to test their ability TO break rules, to see how well they handle authority, etc., and is part of Dumbledore's closest circle in the castle because of it.

He's kind of a plot device used just for adding suspense to certain parts of the story where there would normally not be much if he didn't suddenly show up. Plus, making him an actual wizard would give him too much power over Harry, especially in the early books. If he had been a fully functional wizard it wouldn't have been enough to just hide or run away from him.

Another facet to this theory is how filch constantly complains that the old punishments that he loved aren’t allowed anymore, but given how long dumbledore has been headmaster, he couldn’t have been able to do all those torture punishments unless he was a poltergeist and thus lived way longer, before dumbledore was headmaster.

This theory definitely convinced me, but I just wanted to mention one thing about squibs: I believe it’s possible for them to see and therefore enter Hogwarts since mrs. Figg, who’s a squib, is able to see dementors, unlike muggles. I think squibs still posses enough magic to see things, muggles can’t, like Hogwarts or Dementors (and maybe even Thestrals👀) but they aren’t magic enough to cast spells or brew potions.
