I still haven't seen all the Hobbit movies. The first one I saw, and it was okay but I just didn't thing two more movies weren't required. Maybe I will watch soon.

I cannot say that I like his portrayal at all. Primarily because the movies simply did not stay true to the books in most cases. When it comes to Balin, he is portrayed as the eldest (or near so) in the company, when the book he is decidedly not, being Thorin's junior by about 20 years, yet he calls thorin "laddie" in the movie. Your comment also regarding him fighting off trolls did not happen in the book. He was caught unawares like the other dwarves except for Thorin, who managed to fight back. No disrespect at all! Just want to point out what the great Tolkien wrote, God bless him.

Balin was also one that believed in Bilbo by the movie, I need to get new copies of the whole trilogy, The Hobbit is actually a very short book!

I will be honest, life has been busy for me these past two years. But so glad to be back watching this channel. You guys have fought so hard to keep this channel afloat . And it’s as amazing as it was a while ago. Since my last time watching your videos , I’ve been to New Zealand and have seen the shire, I re read the books along with a more in depth reading of the simarillion, and I’ve gotten engaged. Balin is my favorite dwarf character, as he is relatively less infected with dragon disease and is wiser than other dwarves.

I'm really excited to watch this video, but first I want to say what I thought the situation was, just for the record to see whether I'm right, wrong, or somewhere in between: I thought Balin was Thorin's uncle. That would take him out of the direct lineage to the throne of Erebor and King of Dwarves, but would also give him the right of nobility to forge his own kingdom, and to be a top advisor to any other Dwarf kingdom who recognizes Durin's descendants.

Balin is a distant cousin of Thorin. They share a Great Great Grandfather.

He wouldn't have joined the fellowship (too many people was a problem), but not creating the war at Helm's Deep and not trashing the Shire and also generally helping the good guys, including the Ents, would have been nice.

In early drafts of The Lord of the Rings in the 1940s, Balin had a son called Burin, who accompanied Bilbo Baggins from Bag End along with his fellow dwarves Anar, Hannar, Lofar and Nar.

The portrayal of Balin, was one of the few good things about those abominable movies the book said he was old looking but given they made Thorin look like Fabio in the movies he looked like Thorin’s grandfather when he was in fact younger
