@evangeline77x3 жыл бұрын
It seems incredibly cruel from Jinhua's perspective but you have to consider the legal wife, she would be the one stuck with the immense burden of paying for Jinhua's care for the rest of her life and be forced to pay for Deguan's upbringing AND eventually her dowry all at a loss. For a widow likely with multiple children of her own, and perhaps even other concubines to care for, and with limited/finite resources, paying a dowry (which would've been obligatory) for an illegitimate daughter in that era is literally throwing money away. If Jinhua had a son, yes it would have been much different because even an illegitimate son will carry on the family line. However a girl will be married into another family, bare them children meaning the first wife only loses.. If fault is to be found in this situation it's solely with the men who left her no legal property or any funds knowing she would be vulnerable without them. Especially her first husband, who should have made preparations for her in advance knowing he was much older and that she would surely out live him. However he left the responsibility on his legal wife who had no reason to care what happened to Jinhua or Deguan.
@donnalynn23 жыл бұрын
@@evangeline77x Exactly! Also back then it was a major thing to be an illegitimate child. Nowadays it doesn't mean much and hardly anyone cares but back then it brought shame upon a family and could cast them out of society. You also don't mix classes and you certainly do not ever invite mistresses nor their children to dine at your table. The wife paid her dues and got the name, title, house, etc and they were hers when/if the husband died. It just wasn't done, bringing in the "bastard child" I think some people are living in a fantasy land of how things used to be.

What a poor woman. Sold into sex slavery at age 13, became a concubine at 15, pregnant at 17, a mother at 18, then once her guardian/ owner dies, the extended family has no use for her so kicks her and her infant (1 year old) daughter out on to the streets penniless, so she is forced to turn back to prostitution. She marries again, only to repeatedly outlive her husbands, resulting in being forced back in to prostitution, time and time again. And all this while in constant excruciating pain thanks to bound feet. Wow. Sometimes I think the citizens of the famously horrible totalitarian tyranny of the communist dictatorship of the CCP that is modern day China have it bad; but now after learning about this, I see they have it slightly less bad. Any time some feminazi whines about the treatment of women, I'll be sure to direct them to this appalling travesty and norm for women in the not too distant past.

Interestingly enough, to find out that this Orphan from a dirt poor background would have bound feet? That's highly unlikely because that wasn't something customary to the lower classes. A child with bound feet would not be able to work. That's not a luxury the Peasant classes could afford. Also, binding usually begins when the child is old enough to walk; 3 or 4, because successful 'Lotus' binding would need to begin when the childs bones are still soft and trainable if you will. It would not be very successful later in life. When the child is younger and the bones are still growing, binding breaks and trains the bones into the desired position. There was no mention that her feet were bound early on. If this was something that was requested by her 'benefactor' THEN the process would have definitely been excruciating because her foot bones are harder and more mature. Poor lamb. 😔
@Breathlless3 жыл бұрын
Actually, bound feet was something a lot of lower classes did because it increased their chances of marrying into a better family. Also, it makes a lot of sense for her feet to be bound. Having "lotus feet" wasn't just a cultural thing that signified class, a lot of men back then had a sexual fetish for small feet. Women with bound feet walked a particular gait of small steps that men found appealing. Binding her feet would increase her attractiveness/value. Lastly, having bound feet would ensure she can't easily run away as she grew up.
@ImCarolB3 жыл бұрын
@@Breathlless You're right. Only the poorest farmer's daughters would have unbound feet. An anecdote: In the early 1970s, I was in Singapore and took a short cut through an alley. There was a very old Chinese lady sitting on chair in the sunshine, wearing traditional clothing, with her tiny feet in front of her. Probably one of the last generation with bound feet.
@mllex20183 жыл бұрын

And she can dance with binding feet?
@mllex20183 жыл бұрын
@@Rosie-et5fg yes women with bound feet can walk and can dance I suppose and can do most house chores. The custom pretty much adopted by every single layer of the society, even the poor ones. So I suppose the poorer women still need to do house chores right? . Not sure if the poorest of the poorest bound their daughter’s feet. But tradition and customs is something that you just take it as it is. When the society think women without bound feet are loose women and won’t be able to get married. Then everyone start following the trend. No matter how illogical it is. It is still happening now. In some tradition and culture woman suppose to live their life in a certain way that other parts of the world think is crazy but hey look around us it still exists. I guess the bound feet makes it harder for them to run away to take competitive sport, to do marathon u know that kind of stuff.

"Her feet were bound by rope." I don't think you know what foot-binding was. The bones were broken, then the feet were bent into a crescent shape, then tightly wrapped with strips of fabric. Wrappings were changed about once a week. The goal was to remove flesh by letting it rot, and also by compressing the feet to make them very small. They didn't tie the feet together, nor, as far as I know, rope was not used for any part of the process.

I always love stories of courtesans from the past. While their work was perhaps considered less than upstanding They were usually well educated, well traveled, and enjoyed freedoms that regular women did not. It's unfortunate that the job has taken such a negative turn over the last century. Although I am aware that wasn't the case for all women in that profession. At least they had the hope they could work to that level of freedom in that profession.

I believe it is important to mention for those uninformed that the image at 6:28 depicts the Japanese allies of the British side of the conflict, and not the Chinese boxers. As there are still too many people around the world who lack the knowledge to tell Japanese from the Chinese, which is a mistake of the proportion of not being able to tell the Germans from i.e. the English in the WWII...

Fascinating. She was beautiful. And obviously smart, especially being a woman in those times.

@Vanilla bhabi g¡rl Thank you so much my dear sister, yeah,everything a "real" Swedish person say or do to stand up for our self is considering racist, but the real racists are the emigrants, and our crappy goverment lives in a bubble and not in reality, so screw them! We have no chance at all. All scumbags who is refused in other countries have free entrance to Sweden there they are over and beyond our laws.... And as I was saying, we cant do a thing. Maby you have suggestions of countries who is nice and fair and treats and respect ppl who obey the law ,that I maby can concider to move? Much love to you, and once again, Thank You
