I LOVED the character and sympathized for him , and seeing him become kazekage, talk about protecting people and his friendship with naruto. Gaara never got enough screen time. You'd think naruto's foil would but no. And like, Who was naruto? he was a prank loving kid who was mad about the town not liking him, he wanted to be the hokage to make them respect him and he didn't want to be alone. In no time flat he got the respect of the entire town, got trained by the best people and the only reason people disliked him is because he was an obnoxious, rude, loudmouth, inconsiderate jerk and let's be honest, a little bit of a weirdo about sakura. Over the series he doesn't grow, he doesn't get wiser, he doesn't advance, none of his values are questioned because even though everyone turned their back on him he just wanted some buddies. he just get's a little darker and mellows, he still has the exact same values he did before. Still reckless, still rude, and the majority of the series is fighting the enemy of the week (requiring some training episodes) and him chasing sasuke. and his powers are tajutsu, several iterations of his rasengan, using kurama/super power modes like sage mode, and his clones, all but one of which he learned in like the first 60 episodes. like, the whole series is just the plot happening and naruto being around to show everyone how strong he is. Naruto is never afraid, naruto is never a feeling creature, he's a sassy little A hole that reads as if he KNOWS he has plot armor protecting him. He get's serious but even when faced with a terrifying city leveling danger, what does he do? he throws a kunai into shukakus ass. Now compare that to Gaara Gaara was a cold distant hateful person because his village hated him but his dad also tried to murder him on the reg, his uncle suicide bombed himself to try and kill a five? six? year old kid while telling him he, his loving caretaker and only person on his side hated his guts and wanted him to die. he grew up fending off more assassins than he did enemies. He has a fight where his values are challenged and reaches out. He slowly begins to make amends where he can and puts himself in highly uncomfortable situations to try and reach out to those around him, from quitting being a ninja and joining the army, to trying to be a teacher even though it was unlikely anyone would go near him, he spends years building bridges one stumbling attempt after another, but he keeps trying. He becomes the youngest kage ever and sacrifices his own life to save his village. becomes beloved by (almost) everyone in his village and turns into an awkward soft boy who is one of the best kages in the series, turns his struggling village around, builds a rock solid alliance with a village his own people attacked mere years before, becomes the leader of a unified shinobi army (giving a speech even Naruto couldn't compete with) that embodied everything he'd learned, holds up a dang meteor, reconciles with shukaku that represents everything wrong with his childhood, reconciles with his father who caused him so much suffering, and adopts a kid that's not only going to be vastly stronger than him but also is an excellent parent and has a strong, trusting relationship with his son who idolizes him. Like, idk man, all the hammer-over-the-head speeches Naruto gives about people and friendship is really freaking grating coming from someone who took all of like 10 episodes to be accepted, and it's clear no one in konoha REALLY hated him, he had his teacher, then Kakashi and team 7, made friends all over the place. He has 0 respect for what it means to be a ninja or the real cost of it, (and or it's glossed over/has no lasting affect on him as a whole) he mocks the hokages, and wants to be one so people can't mock him (???) and disrespects everyone. i have started and stopped Naruto 5 times now and always gave up by the end of the sasuke retrieval ark and then bounced around because....Christ I could care less about the screaming fart humor emotional void that is Naruto. Sasuke i care about even less, and sakura is just infuriating watching her pine for a guy who never once had a pleasant interaction with her and verbally and physically abuses her for years after, and even when she shows some sliver of character development ends up a helpless sobbing damsel. So the big fight in the valley of the end and knowing once i power through there will just be MORE Naruto, I want to swear off tv entirely. And like, i love the fights, I love the animation, I love the world, but Naruto is by far one of the worst protagonists I've ever had the displeasure of watching. I've watched almost everything in the series that doesn't focus on him. I wish there was more Gaara, I'd love to see him fumble through being social, i'd love to see him growing and winning respect, i'd love to see him learning to be a person first and a weapon FOR those he cares about second. I want to know how he became the kage, and i want to learn where he got so good at speeches. The best character in the series had the best parts of the series off screen and that's SO friggin frustrating. It feels like spirited away is playing in a theatre but i keep getting caught sneaking in and forcibly dragged back to a live stream of some edgy 13 year old playing fortnite with a pitchy mic. The best parts of naruto is everything AROUND the main character.
