Thank you for this. I had a wild Magpie friend when I lived high in the Rocky Mountains. We met when he was a a very small fledgling with attitude. He kept stealing shrimp bits from my bowl as I fed my Koi. Eventually he would eat out of my hand. We would actually talk to each other. He grew up to lead a group of about 14 Magpies and he did it well. On snow mornings he would tap on my bedroom window until I went to the kitchen and tossed out food to the crew. He lived about 5 years and came to say good bye in the last hour of his life. He died in flight as he flew over my garden wall. I cried for a long time. His name was of course "Maggie."

Trust me if one of these birds see you killing one of their own, they tell every other magpie in the neighborhood your a enemy. And if it's a big group they sometimes start to harass you. On the other hand if you help one of them, they also tell their friends. After helping one of the adults, they brought me shiny things a heap of pieces of metal, plastic, glas and other colored and shiny objects in front of my door. So I drilled holes in the plastic stuff and and put them on a string for them to play with on the balcony. There really fun and interesting birds.

This is true. I had a magie friend for many years who visited every day and would land on my hand and let me feed him. He was the leader of a large flock of Magpies and he did his job well.

I love magpies, a new breeding pair have been building a nest on my block. Apparently the twigs from the tree outside my window are PERFECT for building 😁

Thanks, I befriended some near where I live, feeding them, and watched them breed & now they and their young are friends with the local crows and other corvids too, starlings & jackdaws too. ✌

Here in Denmark they're everywhere and I have never seen such territorial birds. They aggressively chase off any animal who approaches the tree where their nest is and the surrounding trees. I've seen groups of 3/4 them chasing off even cats. In the student dorm where I lived last year we had a family of 5 living in the trees behind the dorm. We gave them all Scandinavian traditional names

We used to have them in our garden when we lived in NW London. They would go crazy for bacon rind when we had it but they would eat anything we put out. Peas, carrots and potatoes. Any left overs from our Sunday roasts. Any bones would be left out after dark for the gorgeous city foxes 🦊

Small mistake: "Pie" stems from French. The Anglo-Saxons said "agu" which is related to German "agelster" (shortened to "elster" in modern German). Alternatively they just called them "hijera" (jay bird, German: "häher").

So very interesting and informative. If your motivation allows, it would be a spectacular lesson, coming from you, to learn about the Albatross. Such a graceful yet powerful bird puts me in a state of awe to simply observe them. Is it possible you would include the Albatross in your informative histories of particular bird origins? I have seen Mag-Pies doing very interesting things, like having meetings, haveing fights, friendly meetings in numbers of 50 or more. I have also seen them killing chicks or even adults of their own, for no known reason at all. I mimick them sometimes, they do not react audiably or visibly. Sometimes I think I get an answer when I mimic a pair of ravens.

I saw two magpies, a pair, trying to catch a really big rat, Like 40 cm without the tail. The rat made very interesting counter-attacks, tried to bite them and eventually hid under an automobile. I tried to scear out the rat for them, but I scared them as well, so they did not get their prey. Very interesting to see, when they tried to get the big rat in pairs before I unfortunatly scared them too much. They do not like humans two meters away, eventhough we might are trying to help them.

Actually this is referring to Australian magpies now that I look harder haha, but occasional dried mealworms likely wouldn't disrupt your visitors diet too much!

@@blackhillsbirder881 np, i should have said its the European kind i am encountering, i put food out a few days in a row when i spotted him, i forgot yesterday, and he (assuming his gender lol) came right up to my kitchen door, and started "shouting" so i put some mealworms out for him, and he just sat and eat them all and flew off when he was done. He seems pretty confident. Hope i can make a little friend!

I had to remove two sky rocket junipers because of storm damage. Each tree has a giant magpie nest where the birds return year by year. I’m not invested enough to know if they are the same birds or family, but I enjoy seeing them prosper and the chicks fledge and talk in the early summer. Should I attempt to extract these huge nests before I compost the trees or take the chance that they will not be returning?

You can make 1 about european sea eagle and its relation to american sea eagle. Here only the tail is white. I think they sometimes cross over the sea. I think the european magpie looks larger

Not the bigfest fan of Sir Maggies ... they chase other bird breeds away in my area .. Do not tick off these birds .They will remember you and dislike you for a long time . Lov to watch a couple in my area and the neighbourhood cats ... interesting interaction . I find them yappie often.

I adore Magpie's... alway's have, just found them beautiful, cheeky and fun to watch! I had a family of Magpie's i watched for uear's raising there young in a tree that used to live out back, as I raised my daughter... every year sane pair, same nest regular as clockwork... i'd watch the fledgling's learning to fly and I adored them i really did.. then sadly my neighbour's, who had planted the big old beautiful tree years before, decided the leave's it dropped every Authum/Winter were just too much of a "messy nuisance" and the tree had to go!... My neighbour's are somewhat elderly, so I had no choice but to respect the collective decision.. but i was quite sad at loss for a while! We have had an "issue" with rodent's since then come to think of it, the Magpie's probably had a prime feeding spot there and helped keep the "population number's" under control!...not that i'm helping much with that situation either, 🤦‍♀️ but thats a whole other story.. 😔🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️🙏❤🦄😇❤🙏

@@remnantwarrior1779 ha ..we have our own magpies. So ya, it's easy to get them. They are indigenous here a couple hundred miles away. We have alot of raptors so I don't think they would take over. My aviary is open. Once the birds make a nest, they are prettyuch moved in, then it's open. All my birds have a chance to move out, every day of the week. I keep 7 miniature chickens who are not suited for the wild. So, they are protected. That said, my birds are only lifted for their safety. And so that's why a person practicing animal husbandry must control a population, for their safety and your sanity. I pull eggs of all my birds when population expands. They don't give a hoot. They just like the sex, eggs arrive after.

@@remnantwarrior1779 we have the whole Corvid Family here in western Canada. Blue Jays,crows, ravens and magpies. But the magpies stop at the mountains which makes no sense. I'd prefer them to starlings.

Magpies are beautiful however they are really defensive, even your housecats for 10 years will be attacked by this newly Magpie living in the tree for 3 weeks.
