The Witch King has the capacity to be on of the most interesting characters in Tolkien lore, but he’s never given an opportunity to actually demonstrate that. This wraith is the first of the nine, presumably more powerful than the others, the architect of Mordor’s war strategy and for centuries was a reigning monarch in Angmar in his own right. Even with the Nazgul being diminished shadows of their former selves, you have to think that someone who even now can accomplish all that must be formidable on his own terms. But even in expanded media, he’s never shown that off. The closest is probably in the ROTWK expansion for BFME II where he unites the armies of the north against Arnor, but even that’s not much. That alone does show why the Angmar-Arnor war would be a great setting for a Tv Show but that’s not likely.

There are so many gaps in the Witch King’s history like in the Second Age before Sauron’s defeat, immediately afterwards, after the fall of Angmar and after the seizure of Minas Ithil that we have no information on. And some of these periods lasted centuries at a time. Sauron’s lack of activity makes sense as he was renewing his strength but was that also true of the Witch King? Did Sauron’s diminished strength also diminish his servants? I would assume not since he assumed the throne of Angmar and smashed the Dunedain kingdom in the north while Sauron was still a disembodied spirit in the east. So if the Witch King had his strength when the Dark Lord did not have his… what was he doing during all those periods of time? Why did he do nothing for so long instead of constantly trying to be a thorn in the side of the free peoples? I think the most likely explanation is Tolkien didn’t think it necessary to explain in great detail but I’d have loved if he did. I can’t imagine Sauron’s deadliest servant just sat about doing whatever the medieval equivalent of doomscrolling was for hundreds of years while Gondor and the elves were right there.
