The Life of Verdi Trailer

Famed for his beloved operas, Guiseppe Verdi endured a lifetime of personal turmoil and popular acclaim. Marked from childhood by his musical talent, Verdi rose to become the preeminent composer of his era amidst family heartbreak, societal upheaval, and a scandalous love affair. In this biographical miniseries seen on PBS, Ronald Pickup (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) gives a captivating performances as Verdi, and ballerina Carla Fracci dazzles as his second wife, opera star Giuseppina Strepponi.
Filmed on location in Italy, London, and Paris, this "positively splendid production" (The New York Times) is narrated by Academy Award winner Burt Lancaster and features clips of Verdi's music, including the perpetual favorites La Traviata and Aida.

ACORN: I saw this on American PBS many years ago, and I recall how extraordinary it was. But it was (badly) dubbed in English. I'd like to find an edition that is in the original Italian, with optional English subtitles. Is this edition in Italian with English subtitles? I have no problem with subtitles, but I do have a problem watching people speak while the sounds don't match the picture.

If Wagner and Verdi would have meet, I don't think they would have liked each other very much.

Verdi had great respect toward Wagner's music. Despite Verdi's extraordinary musical creations, he is quoted as saying, "Do you think that under the same sun and the same moon, I could have composed Tristan or The Ring? Never!"

Who directed this? Whoever it was was as ignorant as Lancaster, who pronounced the composer's name as Vur'dy throughout the film. If Lancaster didn't know better (it's pronounced Vair'dee) he should have. Every time I heard "Vurdy" I cringed. Lancaster was a good actor, but they should have given that narration to someone who had at least attended an opera. The director should have set Lancaster straight, or been fired himself.
