There has been a lot of controversy around the film. However Rodriguez was a seminal part of growing up in the white community in SA during apartheid. On another note check the LITA release by National Wake and read those liner notes. Written by a work colleague of mine.

My favorite Light in the Attic release is The Shaggs-Philosophy of the World. Buying the LITA reissue gives you an affordable and clean version that exposes a unique album that really shows what kind of music can be made by complete innocent amateurs. It's an inspiration for anyone intimidated into thinking that music is only the domain of the highly gifted few. Before the Linda Lindas, Daniel Johnston and Deerhoof there were The Shaggs!

Another title that LITA released in 2013 is Bob Frank a Dylan, Cash Memphis sounding lp. I didn’t recognize the artist/record, I took a chance and it is great. BTW I have both Rodriguez records, original copies on Sussex label. There other reissue label, there are a few, is Now Again also great with reissues. Great video….✌

Love that Nocentelli record. I met and recorded him back in the early 90s when the Meters briefly re-formed. Incredible band. This was for a huge 4-hr broadcast from the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival I produced in '92 and '93 for NPR. Surprised you didn't mention any of the LITA Japanese jazz, funk etc. comps - they are so much fun.

This is a very cool video. Gave me some insights into newer labels. I wish there was a good indie reissuing label. There are a number of Australian bands and US bands that would be good to get repressed. Thanks as always for sharing and the topic. 6 degrees of separation. Mick Harvey formerly of bad seeds is a big Gainsborough fan and influenced by him, and Karen Dalton as you said is one of Nick Cave’s favourites. Rodriguez was weirdly big in Adelaide and in the documentary South Africa. Saw him twice after he was found, once with Violent Femmes bass player and Midnight Oil drummer in the band. I love all the titles you showcased. 🙏

Thank you Mazzy for sharing your favorite Light in the Attic releases. I really enjoy them as well; Betty Davis Columbia Years release, the Nancy Sinatra Start Walkin, the Ofege The Last of the Origins, but my favorite is the Leo Nocentelli Another Side release... so so good my #1 from them. I really dig the Doris Did you Give the World Some Love Today, Baby as well, probably my second favorite. The Matata Independence release would be my 3rd.

that Karen Dalton album is so f***** great. Love it. What a voice. And her version of the George Jones song, Take Me, is amazing. And it was Nick Cave with the song When I First Came to Town which was inspired by Dalton's, Katie Cruel, who put me on her path in the 90s.

Hey Mazzy, greetings from India. Just a small correction if I may. The instrument that Peter Walker is shown playing on the cover of the album is an Indian classical music instrument called a Sarod. It has its origins in Afghanistan, but in India it is hugely popular, arguably second only to the sitar. You can learn more about it here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarod
@mazzysmusic2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the correction. I do know about Sarods but as I spoke I didn’t look close at the photo. Appreciate your comment. ✌🏼

Such a great label. Some of my favourites, not already mentioned, are Bob Frank, the Stone Crush comp, Lee Moses, the Kris Kristofferson demo album, the Listen, Whitey! comp, Wendy Rene, the Mark Lanegan box, Pastor TL Barrett and Charles Packy Axton. Unfortunately their distribution in Europe sucks and they are quite hard to find.

They did the first two Monkees LPs Remastered and cut by Kevin Gray in great 2-LP Editions (forget the Friday Music crap). I'll never buy from Light in the Attic again. They do not stand by their product. I purchased one of their exclusives. The box it was shipped in arrived pristine. When I took the record out the bottom of the jacket was completely sliced open. I contacted LIA not wanting a refund but just to send it back and get a replacement. I was told they do not refund or replace for cosmetic damage. This is more than cosmetic. I purchased a brand new, unopened record and this is not. Needless to say I am now stuck with this record, which by the way I was giving as a gift. Buyer Beware!
