Tony Baker I know that the movie is essentially a retelling of Prometheus and his gift of fire to mankind, but the way it was presented seems Lovecraftian/Edgar Allen Poe-ish, as it fleshed out both of the characters’ animalistic side, (One of Poe’s prevalent themes), their descent into madness, (Common theme in Lovecraft’s works) and how it set in a coastal, otherworldly feeling environment (Yet another common thing found in Lovecraft’s works). Also ironically enough the movie is set in New England where most of Lovecraft’s works take place.

@Deckard easiest thing for people who aren't into film academically to understand is the excellent performances and atmosphere. Eggers has such an eye for historical detail and accuracy and so much research went into the film from the more obvious mythological allusions of Prometheus/Proteus to the more subtle mythologies of seaman's tales/what the lighthouse and its light represents along with the ocean/mermaid being a character by themselves. A lot of what makes the film excellent is what comes out when you question why certain things happen in the film. Why is Pattinson's character at this lighthouse? How does the choice of reducing aspect ratio/filming in black and white contribute to sensations of discomfort/claustrophobia? It can be quite pretentious but I think eggers tries his best to defuse how unapproachable it is at times by adding humor and pairing it with great acting (like defoe's monologue). Like many art films, it's not plot driven but character driven.
@SunnyMuffinsRox4 жыл бұрын

I took it as he's pretending to be the foreman he killed, and also took his accent. His accent when he's sober is different than when he's drunk/going batshit insane, or at least those were the only times I noticed the switch. When Pattinson is fighting Dafoe, he hallucinates and sees a blond man with the same haircut and mustache as him, which I believe is supposed to be the foreman. If Pattinson's character is willing to go so far as to copy the guy's mustache and hair, I think it's a reasonable assumption that he also started faking an accent.

How can 2 Lighthouse keepers getting drunk and slipping into cabin fever be “too much to take in” while all these superhero movies are jam packed with characters, villains, wars, factions, multiple planets, advanced technology and literal gods and you can absorb all of that with ease?

They all said they wanted more mythology in it but they clearly missed something. Spoilers alert!!!!! William Dafoe mentioned Greek mythology at time’s and there’s a story called Prometheus where Prometheus wanted to get this fire(the Light) and Zeus told him not to, but he did it anyways. William Dafoe mentions how birds were going to Eat out his intestines, and that’s how the movie ends, with Pattinson getting eaten by birds. The Prometheus story also has the same ending, Zeus punished Prometheus by having him get his intestines ripped out by eagles for eternity.

"With great performances, comes great farts.." Love the movie. 9.5/10 for me. Disagree with AJ that WD gave a better performance than RP. Couldnt hurt to do some research before reviewing a movie. Its Willem Dafoe, not William. And its Pattinson, not Patterson. And yes the movie is directed by Roger Eggers, the director of The Witch. At least Joe got that right even though he didnt know the name.

OJ is the best kind of "mainstream" movie goer. He sais outright that he likes mainstream movies and that his rating will come from this perspective. I wish more people - both from the arthouse and the mainstream fan crowd - would be so amicable and open about their preferences without deriding the ones from others.

@thedeepfriar7454 жыл бұрын
You don’t need a large budget to make a good horror film. You could actually argue that large budget horror films are weaker due to the fact that they pad it too much with cgi visuals and put less attention on nailing the script and visual creativity

The part with the seagulls at the end makes sense because when Dafoe was insulted that Pattinson didn't like his cooking, he had that a huge monologue where he said to Pattinson that he will have his guts/entrails ripped out from his body.
