I just searched the age rating. Nightbane is rated YA, 13 and up, 8 grade minimum. ...There are sex scenes. IDK what's going on, but the era i grew up on (Divergent, Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Percy Jackson, etc.) never had sex scenes. These books weren't made for kids. They were made for horny adults who want to be kids again lmao

The main character is "not yet two decades old." So, not specifically a child for the readers to imagine being.

"they were made for horny adults who want to be kids again" wooow that is EXACTLY it bc ive noticed these popular YA authors are usually in their mid-twenties at youngest writing MCs that are always around like 19 at the oldest and theyre ALWAYSSS extremely over-sexualized/sexually charged while at the same time being infantilized mostly by the love interests specifically

So, you can actually buy your way onto the NTY Bestseller list or your agent/publisher can. Otherwise, you have to sell 5k - 10k books in 2weeks to get on it. And, as a Writer and Developmental Editor of several years now, I have beef with Aster, and Yarrow because their writing is lazy, underdeveloped, and incorrectly marketed, amongst a ton of other things. I want to take a red pen to their books so badly.

the bestseller list is partially based on how many bookstores places orders for the book. i think what happened here is there was an expectation that it would sell well but not a lot of people are actually picking it up and to buy. i think the book will get off the best sellers list quickly bc people arent buying/reading it therefore bookstores arent going to be buying more copies

I think they were similiary hype pre realse [Fourth Wing and Light Lark] but while lightlark went straight into controversy with how it didn't deliver on the promise while with Fourth Wing it take longer to for people to start shitting on it. [justifiably] also the fact that Aster is like one of the tik tok girlies and Rebecca isn't also prolly play a role

I listened to this twice thinking I missed the plot but there truly wasn’t one, you did mention that the plot had become her emotions and therefore there was nothing really happening because it didn’t go anywhere lol. There’s no progress being made so it reads like a textbook and progresses like one too

The only good part was the ending. So random but throughout the whole first book isla talks about how she learned to endure torture in silence. She endures pain without flinching or showing it. Then in the second book in her memories she’s screaming and crying every two pages.

Who the hell edited this book is my equivalent to I want to speak with the manager. No, I'm not a book Karen. I'm an author desperately trying to find out whom not to hire. An eggy thing? Glad you asked. Yes, there was an egg reverence. "The balloon looked like an egg." As writer yes there are scenes we really want to write and others that are neccesary. But we do our best with necessary. What we don't do is writing filler. We cut filler when we rework our storys. Sometimes a lot of it. My definition of filler is something that is not necessary. Not necessary means it doesn't do anything for the character or story development, general feel and flow of the story or Worldbuilding. Don't get me wrong the rule of cool counts. If it's not necessary but epic it stays. The editor and beta readers decide if it's epic. Oh and at least my process is: Draft. Total denial that that is my draft. I never wrote that crap. Reworking the draft. Now reworking again. Then beta readers. Reworking the draft. Reworking the draft again looking for things to cut. Checking facts. Google names. Get mistakes out. Rework again while getting draft red out loud by computer voice. Give to editor. Cry when getting draft back from editor. Dooing the changes anyway. Spellcheck. Then line editor... At that point I've invested countless hours and bucks. Book is still not published. If it gets published keep in mind all people working on that damed thing are human there still will be mistakes, there still might be plot holes everybody missed. No book is perfekt. So after that rant why don't I want to hire Alex Asters editor? Because they didn't give it back to her and didn't tell her it's not ready to be edited. Only an honest editor will help you to grow and enhance your work.

I wrote a novel when I was 15, and I still love it. Or rather, I still love the characters and concept. So you know what Ive done with it? Ive become a better writer, and Ive made so many changes to it that it's almost a completely different story from the version I wrote when I was 15, because that original version sucked. All Ive kept are characters and core conecepts, and not even all of either of those things. I cut things that I was really attatched to, because they weren't benefitting the story. If you really love your story, you should want it to be the best that it can be.

I am convinced that some people should not be authors. Publishers are just going after clout rather than actual talent. Also I’m sitting here like how is it that the editors looked at this with critical eyes and have a straight face

When I read 'my wife' I all but threw the book. I had to get it out of my hands. My unpopular opinion is Oro deserves better. Only thing the guy did wrong is love someone for the first time in centuries and then she hits him with 'but I love him too'. And you just KNOW Alex thought she ate with that line, but I was just cringing. And instead of showing us scenes, she just be like I spent the week doing this with this person, and I'm like ok? show me or I'm not going to give a shit about anyone am I. So because of that, when the 'war' came, lol, it was like a dinner party gone a bit rowdy. What war? What stakes? ugh. To think I actually didn't mind the first book, tolerated, for vibes... but this was a whole filler book where nothing happens?

I genuinely think TikTok's love of YA fiction comes from the app rotting their reading comprehension to the point where they cannot properly comprehend books for adults.
