When I was young, we got TV footage like Eddie Adams' _Saigon Execution_ (his still photo) and Life magazines' _Burning Monk._ And of course the random gory Vietnam war footage during dinner on the evening news. When kindergarten aged, I watched in horror as the local PBS affiliate showed a live C-Section, complete with scalpel cutting and the drivers Ed scare film _Signal 30._ Star Trek was quaint by comparison. ;-)

I was always haunted by the death of the memory alpha library technician as her face began changing colors with her voice strangely altered. I really liked this episode for its exploration of Scotty and Lt. Romaine's relationship. I can relate to your desire to interact with a cast member and have them smile at you. I actually got to do just that. I met Nichelle Nicholls in the summer of 1989 at a ST convention in Las Vegas. When I finally got to see her to get a personalized autographed photo, I completely forgot what I wanted to say, but she was so very gracious and warm. I was so overwhelmed, that I teared up speaking with her, but for now, I'm smiling at your reaction to this episode!! Happy New Year to you and your family Bunny.

I went to a con in Seattle where Nichelle Nicholls was the guest. My 60+ year old dad and I drove to Seattle and while I was at the Con he visited relatives, at 70+ HE WAS NOT A SCI-FI FAN!!! I sat through her show/answer time but when it came time for the reception line there were to many people and only a certain number were allowed to get in line for a autograph and I was not among the lucky ones! As I left the I was surprised to see my Dad standing in the door way. He had come looking for me and when he tried to get in all he had to do was say he was looking for his son and they let him in for free. NOW FOR THE KICKER!!!! Dad was always able to talk to anyone and when he saw who I had been wanting to get a autograph from he said, "Is that the woman you came to see? I have been standing her talking to her for the past few minutes."! He did not even know she was famous for Star Trek. But then I guess I should have expected something like that, after all he did crash a party at Ginger Rogers' house in LA in the 30ies when he was a teenager!

“Season three means we have no idea what to expect at all…” Yep, pretty much… So yes, this means Bunny has long since officially graduated from TOS casual fan to TOS connoisseur, since she’s voicing what was pretty much consensus opinion about the third season. It goes back to what I’ve said since Bunny started the first season: if she’s giving the same reactions we had back in the TOS syndication days, then that means that the show communicates not just to a single audience of a single generation, but to any audience, because good is good in any time period.

If "Catspaw" was the unofficial Halloween episode of the series, this is the Christmas episode, just a big, living Christmas tree with twinkling lights in space and smiles all around. (The episode also first aired 10 days after my birth, so it must be important.) You'll see more of these kinds of episodes in the "Next Generation" series---the unknown entity and can we communicate with it? They were all about cutting costs in Season 3, and this is one of those, with few guest stars to pay and pretty much a bottle episode. It was refreshing that the love interest didn't die, as they usually do in series like this, when the main cast really isn't allowed to have steady lovers. However, the happy ending somehow sapped the energy that the episode had going, i.e., it sorta fizzled out, like several episodes this season.

Probably means nothing to you as you weren't a syfy loving kid living in the 1960s, but I couldn't resist anyway. 😋Space Ghost was a Saturday morning cartoon concurrent with Star Trek about a superhero who could fly, turn invisible, had various other energy-based super powers (including his own version of deflectors and phasers) and had various space-traveling adventures involving aliens, monsters, and so on. @@bunnytailsREACTS Yes, in 1966 he was a cartoon superhero with his own action series; sort of like combining Superman with Star Trek. Coast to Coast was a (imo lame) parody of that and it bugged the eff out me too (please pardon my French) because I still have fond memories of the original cartoon! Shows like that were brand new at the time (up to then nearly all cartoons were more of the Flintstones variety with the exception of Jonny Quest) and cartoons like Space Ghost were as fresh and vibrant to me as Star Trek itself was. It was a very different era indeed! lol

Great reaction you’re right they should rename this episode the smiles of Zetar. Could you write the great smiles in this episode even when your chapel talks to Scotty and says you have a great bedside manner in the wrong business that was a great moment I like it Blood when they’re all getting involved we see everybody there’s a little bit everybody gets apart to play. I wish you all episodes to be that way but I know they can’t be but it’s nice when you get one. She’s gonna appreciate it all the more when you see one with it altogether They do their part. Yeah it’s about 100 people lost but remember there’s a reason was lost a long time ago and that’s just what was left when they attacked me alpha they killed thousands of people who were studying scholars was doing the knowledge of the Federation and those best minds in the federation were lost and all the knowledge of the Federation lost hopefully we can rebuild it eventually and hopefully nothing was lost forever. There’s definitely build a backup across the federation from Alpha and if they’re gonna have scholars like that studying that should be some kind of protection definitely put shields strong shields and I really want. I don’t wanna put weapons because it’s against the Federation policy. They wanna share the knowledge openly anonymously anybody who wants it, but to put some kind of phase on a protection case from emergency or leave a ship behind patrol the area to protect it to make sure we don’t have that lots of life again or knowledge again Hope you had a merry Christmas. I hope you and your whole family and friends. Have a safe and happy new year and may your friends and family. Have a very safe and happy holidays. Speaking of Scotty....you're the best, but you should get a reprimand for dereliction of duty! Your constant fawning over your love interests are keeping you from your job! Get it in gear, Chief Engineer!! :finger wag: The Memory Alpha station was either GIGANTIC - continent size - or that planetoid was very small! As always, Bunny, your analysis of the plot is sharp and very perceptive, as well as the links to WNMHGB. As a few others have mentioned here, music from that episode was repeatedly and prominently used here, as was a theme from The Empath, which you remarked on. Speaking of horrifying, the images of the woman on Memory Alpha is about the most unsettling of anything ever shown on TOS, IMO, perhaps even more than the close-up on Kirk after being subjected to Dr. Adams' 'treatment' on Tantalus, leading into a commercial break.

I would put Asteroid strikes, errant neutron bursts and other natural phenomenon at the top of the list of reasons to equip it with a planetary defense shield. Sure, the Klingons or the Borg or someone else could come after it someday, but there is no doubt that one day the star it orbits _will_ someday end its lifecycle and throw off some kind of destructive energy, like all stars of all types.

I liked this episode. Shows how the pursuits of immortality or longevity we all have within us can be disastrous when there is no cost high enough for us to continue living or reobtain our youth. This episode really knew how to creep the viewer out ... the frozen stare with the zombie mumbles...talk about a crash n burn after a wrong left turn onto Creeperville avenue. I knew you were going to fall further in love with Scotty with this episode, so like the crew this episode, I was all smiles in my clairvoyance of the joy you would feel. I know I mentioned the book Kobayashi Maru to you before when talking about Chekov, but I really should have said you should get or read the book for your love of Scotty. The original series has shown you Scotty's passion for lovely women, his prowess as an engineer even in his hesitancy to execute orders on the risk of failure and losing the ship, and it has also shown just how effective he is as an acting Captain himself. The book will blow your mind when it comes to Scotty...How brilliant is Scotty really? Why is he an engineer? Why isn't Scotty a starship Captain? What was Scotty's response when he took the Kobayashi Maru test? Gotta read the book The Kobayashi Maru by Julia Ecklar.

Nice to see you having fun with the series. Star Trek does deal with some quite serious and heavy topics, which will become even more apparent as you move through the franchise, but that doesn't mean one shouldn't have fun with it. I'm sure Lieutenant Mira Romaine lettuce would wholeheartedly agree.

Nothing good ever happens when Scotty falls in love. This is the third and most serious of Scotty's romances. He was way out of his league in Who Mourns For Adonais? with Lt. Palomas. His fling with the belly dancer in Wolf In The Fold was extremely short lived. And now this. In every case, the usually very practical and competent Scotty behaves totally out of character like a lovesick puppy. They should have kept Scotty away from girls and had him stick to engineering. Yes, the term Memory Alpha comes from this episode. The website today is an extremely useful resource for all things Star Trek, not just TOS. This episode reminds me not just of Where No Man Has Gone Before, but of Return To Tomorrow, with its "possession" sequences, like the biblical stories of demon possession by "Legion". We see a lot more of Kirk's "staccato" delivery. "We must - get her - into the pressure chamber." I think this is a fairly enjoyable episode, with another humorous ending. Still, not a fan of Scotty romances. And naturally there is no mention of Lt. Romaine in the few subsequent episodes - the great reset occurs again.

I saw this episode when I was about five as well, and although it is among my favorites, the colors, facial expression and noises of the dying woman also gave me nightmares for years afterwards. You also asked about the effects of the remaster, and for this episode I’d say the remaster is extremely similar to the original, in fact almost indistinguishable for the most part. In fact I think the facial color changes effect might have just been the original effect, no remaster needed.

The Smiles of Zetar… I love your name for this episode. I agree, the smiles really make this episode better. The third season can be pretty grim (as you have seen in some episodes so far). Unlike In Scotty’s earlier romances, which were rather one-sided, l think Mira really reciprocated his feelings. Sure, Carolyn liked him, but it wasn’t love (or else Apollo wouldn’t have stolen her affections). (As an aside, Carolyn’s job was rather similar to Marla McGivers-both in historical fields. Maybe it’s a shame Scotty isn’t into redheads. Marla might not have fallen for Khan, and Khan might have been less bloodthirsty in his revenge.) Mira’s assignment was to transfer new equipment to Memory Aloha. While it isn’t warp drive, it’s still a tech-related job that Scotty could easily related to. I’m sure he must have met Mira as her tech came on board. He would have asked her a question, and she would have responded glowingly… and it would have been love at first meeting. Carolyn called him Scotty, but he was obviously just a friendly guy to her. But you can tell Mira thinks of him as more than a friend. Indeed, their love for each other was the key to get successfully defeating the Zetarians. How often has love been a key to defeating the bad guys in a TOS episode?

I would rate this episode as just a bit below "meh". You are right to point out that even "Spock's Brain" had its good points. This episode did let more of the cast get involved than usual, which is good. But it was a straight action story, with no food for thought. And when the third season gave us food for thought, it tended to be over the top: "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" and "The Mark of Gideon". Previous seasons had episodes that had meat to them without being preachy; take the fan favorite, "City on the Edge of Forever", which is basically classical Greek tragedy - mortals are not built to deal with knowing all the consequences of their actions with certainty. Speaking of that episode... in episodes like "A Taste of Armageddon", we have seen that Scotty makes an excellent acting captain... but an episode like _this_ makes it seem as if, if Scotty were captain, he would have let Edith Keeler live.

Today it takes an entire 13 episode season to tell one complete story. Old Trek had to do that in EACH 50 minute episode 79 times using traditional filming techniques and low budget special effects at the time, (The other 10 minutes during network airing were the commercials, and local public service announcements that paid for Star trek to even be on TV. And at this episode, they had already pretty much decided to cancel the show. They then were scrambling to hold it together for the last remaining shows. these were the toughest times in each of their careers and they had no idea when or where the next job would come.... The budget and, some believe the quality of the episodes fell off a cliff REALLY fast at this time in production! Others didn't seem to notice.....I was there in real World time.....

There were other episodes that you've already seen where Scotty falls in love; my criticism (and many other people's criticism) of this episode is the same as of those: he is always shown as falling so head over heels in love that he becomes completely unprofessional - and this is out of character for him, as is established by how he behaves in every other episode! They just can't seem to have Scotty fall in love and still be Scotty!

I have experienced 5 atmospheres in a bounce dive to 120 feet underwater, but didn't stay - its marginal for recreational divers to go that deep on regular air, the nitrogen becomes an intoxicant. The human body can withstand tremendous pressures, given we are mostly water and water does not compress easily. Medical types treating a patient with the bends in a hyperbaric chamber have to get to about 4 atmospheres in only a couple of minutes for the sake of the patient and may go under considerably more depending in the specifuc case, but I understand its brutal on the sinuses. The trouble is less the increase, but the decrease. Pressure has to be stepped down very carefully and very slowly - McCoy alludes to this.
