The limits of learning - kids in crisis | DW Documentary

Surveys show that the majority of German students feel hopeless, listless and even depressed as a result of the long lockdown. Homeschooling is overwhelming for many of them, and some families are struggling to cope. We visited students at home.
Every morning, 14-year-old Catharina sits down at the dining table and tries to study Latin, Math, or English. Her 10-year-old brother, Philipp, sits next to her. He also has to study - and likes using Catharina as a teaching assistant. How are either one supposed to concentrate? Their single mother can’t help, because she is a doctor and has to go to work. Anna has it a little bit easier. She is 16 years old and considers the time she has spent in lockdown to be the most productive of her life so far. She can finally concentrate, and work in peace. Leandro is 14 and can't understand this. He feels completely overwhelmed by the massive heap of tasks. What should he tackle first and how should he do it? He can't provide the structure and guidance he used to get every day in the classroom for himself, and often has trouble getting out of bed in the morning -an indication of early-onset depression. Axel Rowohlt visited Catharina, Philipp, Anna and Leandro, and also spoke to Felix, their student representative. He conducted a survey among students in Berlin - with alarming results.

True. I am in University now, but am still living at home, due to the pandemic and family circumstances. I have been getting comment from my parents, how easy it is for me, since I can just sit at home all day. I don't meet anybody but my family for months at a time, I have absolutely *NO* daily routine and my studies feel like a complete waste of time. Im staring on a screen 6 hours a day, while learning nothing, at a time that has a huge influence on my future life. But at least I can "sit at home all day"

That's one of the major problems that developing countries have been facing since the school started last year like here in the Philippines. Our country has a bad internet connection and one of the slowest in the world. There are also many students here that have no access to the internet. I hope this situation will be back in normal as soon as possible.

It's not only hard for the kids but also for teachers. Live teaching is almost impossible because you need stable internet connection and sufficient internet quota. Those are like luxury for many students. Furthermore, some of them rarely paying attention to any materials or assignments given by their teachers since they have to help their parents who already have less income or even jobless due to pandemic. The teachers also can't do much facing this difficult situation.

Education is very hard to change. It requires educators who want change and have the skills necessary to bring that change about. It needs school systems and parents that are open to change. The most damming phrase in education is "We have never done it that way before!"

@@old-moose oh there are experimental schools in CA and elsewhere that are working on team based learning curricula. The challenge has always been DOE standardization and parental work constraints. WFH and remote learning is actually a real opening

@@rabbitsforyang8273 There are always bright spots but "testable" local, provincial, and national standards are a problem. I've spent half my career working in a polytechnic where the test is being able to do the job which is refreshing. Social media has been used successfully with adult students. Almost all programs at Sask PolyTech have a co-op ed or practicum requirement. We found that social media is a great way to support students and even help reduce problems with PTSD with medical field students. I haven't seen any work being done with k-12 students. (I'm retired now so I haven't been diligent in following research.)

@@PASBGR my daughter says this is the best year ever because she is more comfortable and productive. She’s on the fifth grade and is excelling even more than before. This is in Bethesda, MD. So no, I do not forget her or the girl in the report who’s also enjoying her remote learning. But this is a utilitarian argument: more would be greatly benefited at the expense of the comfort of the few (mine included) if it means a student like Leandro will get more joy and growth out of this critical developmental period of their lives. And we could allow those students to stay at home if they want. But I would like to see them back in school for their own sake.

I’ve been a straight A student for a long time. I even managed to do it for two semesters of online learning while doing remote work study. However, this will not be the case this semester. I’ve been struggling a lot because of burnout. I feel like I’m not myself. I was so used to always having things together and keeping a routine but I’m just exhausted now. Thankfully, I will be graduating in a few days 😭 I look forward to getting a break.

Hopeless, listless and depressed is exactly how I felt over 40 years ago in the pre digital USA. I questioned the pointlessness of existence constantly and was told I was an ungrateful complainer. This reminds me of those times when everything was supposed to be great....but wasn't. I suppose everyone has their own psychic hurdles to overcome.

@@mayormc But real human interaction can take place online if it is planned for and very few teachers are trained to build it into the class. It isn't the same as face-to-face but it can be done. And it isn't like this is something new. In 1974 I wrote a paper titled "If I haven't had a bloody nose from a playground accident, have I been to school" and looked at social interaction and distance education.

High school felt like a pointless experience save for a few books and ideas I revisited as an adult. I feel that the reason why grade school provided hopelessness, listlessness, and depression is because of the approach to teaching. For instance, what's the point of doing algebra and reading literature and history if you're simply being tested at face value? Literature, history, and mathematics are fields of study that have grown out of interpretation. Regurgitating facts won't make the future, problem-solving and creativity will.

I have 2 kids (11 and 7). For parents: try to spend a time together with kids as much as you can. Have a conversation about ordinary things around house or routine. Have a plant pot or garden so they can connect to something else. Read together. Watch tv together. Kids need communication! If they can't get it at school, try to give some of your time. I know that it's hard to do, especially when you work. But we have to go through this anyway...

My heart goes to Leandro and to the child his mother told in the story; not everyone can handle this situation the same way, no matter if they have all the resources to do it or nothing at all. This truly breaks my heart. Also, I wonder what would be the outcome for this generation: would they be more self-sufficient, and resolve problems easier due to be forced to learn by themselves at such young age? Will they be more cooperative or isolated when they grow up? What kind of jobs will they choose, the ones with a screen 24/7 or something more analog? Let's see what the future holds, but let's be ready to be there for them because most of us adults didn't had to do this at that age.

Regular school has deadlines too and weekly tests. In university you have tests and deadlines too. Whole distance learning actually saves you tons of time as you dont have to walk anywhere, and you dont have to worry about pointless subjects, you save a couple hours per day minimum. I mean lets be honest, you have all the time in the world to do your task , you have the textbooks you can even rewatch the lessons, but you just dont do it because nobody is controlling you. With that attitude you wouldnt do well in regular school or uni as well.

In my country there are counsellors (well at least in my school), I tried to reach them out for help because I feel too much pressure from online school and even my home environment, I started developing some signs of depression and isolated myself from others, and yet they don't take it seriously, they asked about my ranking (my grades are falling down, and the fact that I used to be a top student makes me stressed bc I can't do what used to be good at), and they asked what I want to do in the future instead, which made me even more sad and started blaming myself for everything. My counsellors (and sadly my family too) said that I'm too sensitive and weak, I feel so invalidated because nobody can really understand me, :'

I wanna thank DW for showing this documentary because we students are struggling in this pandemic. In the Philippines, all of us students have to do home schooling or online schooling bcz our government doesnt allow us to go out or we only have to go out only for essential purposes. It's kinda depressing we cannot see our friends in person or our teachers stuffing us lots of assigments and staring at a computer, phone, or tablet for so long. If u r depressed, u r not alone bcz we are all depressed in this pandemic and that includes me. This pandemic makes us all depressed, anxious, angry etc etc etc. Hopefully this pandemic will end and we can all go back to our normal lives like in 2019 or early 2020. I feel so much for our future. I'm a teacher in Toronto, Canada and I see the same concerns from my grade 8 students but unlike most teachers I do not have deadlines, instead I have conferences with my class about what would be "doable" for them. If teachers are giving such strict guidelines, they need a talking to. Have they forgotten what it was like to be a kid? This virus needs to take a back seat to our children's mental well-being.

You have the leeway to have "conferences." Others don't. Consider the fact that there is a cultural and legal framework in which German teachers operate and that they're obliged to use methodologies they might not be personally fond of if they want to keep their jobs. It should have been fairly obvious that this isn't a matter of one or two teachers being rigid and old-fashioned, but that they have a systemic problem. In my experience, the German approach to most things tends to be cautious, rather than experimental. Once they decide to implement something, they do it thoroughly and competently, but the process is not fast. During an unexpected crisis like this, the lack of "agility" unfortunately is a major drawback. It's not the teachers who should be chided for this, but their lawmakers and ministers who should be pushing for reforms.

@@miaum1976 There are school systems like this in Canada and the US as well but both countries lack a national school policy and state/provincial policy are often fairly open for local school districts to do what they want BUT funding, beyond local taxes, is often based standardized test scores.

Kinda crybaby, I mean kids will find excuses not to do something and will say whatever convenient for them. He needs to learn timeplaning, while having distance learning he actually saves a couple hours per day for not having to walk there etc, he has the ability to rewatch the filmed lessons etc. but the kid is just lazy, and he must be told that he is that way, because if you support his idea that he is a victim he wont develop himself and his efficiency in studying

Looks like I am one of those rare students who felt that this academic year of mine was the best in my life. I really enjoyed it and home learning didn't affect my grades, in fact, in most years I was really unhappy and moody for most of the day but this year I was far more happy. I've had to help one of my relative to make sure they pay attention in class. I also have to help them with certain assignments they don't get done. I feel like I have some very mild sadness because I have a hard time sleeping every night. Now, I consider falling asleep at 10:40 PM or 11:00 PM normal. I also feel like all I do everyday is just snap at everyone. I feel like I'm acting like a terrible person, and the words escape from my mouth before I even fully process what the best thing to say is. Before this, I never really considered 'mental health' as very important. I guess I've learned the truth the hard way.😐

@@Peterbrendanalbert Learning responsibility means learning to make your own bed, or holding your little sister's hand as you cross the street. This isn't that. It's taking on the role of teacher, the role of mother, at a time when this girl should be in school herself, just being a kid. That is sad. I don't know if it was sad when you did it. You say you "took responsibility" but that's too vague to really tell me anything about what you were doing. Were you sacrificing hours of your day - focus you could have been giving to your own education - to teach your younger siblings? Did you give up the little play time you had left to cook and clean for them? Were your responsibilities a burden that aged you before your time? Because with schools closed and parents working, this is the situation that faced many kids over the last year. Particularly girls. And many people don't even see anything wrong with putting a young girl in this position, because in their eyes, it's her natural role and good practice for future motherhood. Her own potential, her own needs, take a back seat. I was such a child, praised for how "mature" and "responsible" I was. And now, in adulthood, my family can't understand why I don't want children of my own. But why would I? Would a mother whose kids have finally left home after eighteen years want to start the cycle again with a newborn? Of course not. She's exhausted, and wants to figure out who she is beyond the role of mom. Well, this is exactly what my parents unwittingly created in me. I'm great with kids but I've been there, done that, and have no desire to do it again. Kids are not mini-adults. Teaching and parenting are jobs adults choose, and in the case of teachers and childcare practitioners, are trained and paid to do. Kids aren't. Kids should have kid responsibilities, like "brush your teeth at night" and "do your homework". Many of the kids in this documentary already spoke about how hard it was for them to meet deadlines and be in control of their own attention span during e-learning. In the school environment, a teacher would provide structure and help keep them on track. And it's clear they miss that. "Learning responsibility" in this case hasn't made these kids strong. It's been too much for them. They're stressed out and falling behind. And no wonder! There's a reason we don't just toss kids into a school building with a video playing on a laptop all day. There's a reason they don't just teach each other. Adult supervision and support is key to creating healthy, happy kids.

I feel more unmotivated to do things, and I'm almost a hundred percent sure I have some very mild depression. I've noticed the signs in myself. Now, I get irritated by the slightest things, and I have breakdowns every once in a while. I get annoyed with my sibling so often that it feels like they do nothing at all. I do almost all their dishes, I have to keep them on task while they get upset for me checking on their screen, I have to help them with assignments they should've done *IN* *CLASS* even though they are old enough to do those things themselves. I get mad at them everyday, and I feel like I do things for them that they can do themselves. I NEVER considered mental health important until the pandemic, and I feel sad knowing that there are other kids who are suffering more than I am.

When i was not successful in my school work , my mother always told me that failures are the pillars of success and slow and steady wins the race(btw education is a journey not a race ). In the meantime from my life experience i learned that our own health(both mental and physical) is the most important thing .

I can relate so much to these children. My brother and I lived fending for ourselves every day because my mother, a single parent, had to go to work all day. We had to figure everything ourselves and be responsible of studying by ourselves. School was heaven to us. I can't image these children removing that important part of their lives. How do they get to understand society if they have been amputated from any social gathering. The problem is that it is not over, and we might need to extent this. How will these children and teenagers will be able to function in jobs if they did not get a chance to learn to live around others?

It's much the same in the US. I'm 17 and still in high school, and the workload is simply unmanageable. I'll be applying to universities soon and I don't know how I'll be able to keep up with schoolwork as well as my applications and all my other responsibilities when that comes, especially since many covid-related restrictions will still be in place next school year. My parents can't help me with my schoolwork because they don't really understand it, so I'm largely on my own to figure things out. It's incredibly frustrating and I wish the school system would acknowledge that and then take steps to make their policies less unreasonable, but they've been a brick wall this last year and some change - they're so stuck in their ways that I'm convinced they won't ever fix their problems.

I think that if I was at school now I would have preferred remote learning. I was bullied at school and my classmates distracted my learning. Thats all behind me for a long time. I understand that some pupils struggle with remote learning. Either because of problems at home and their struggle with remote schooling. This has advantages and disadvantages Amazing documentary. Even before the pandemic, german schools are known for overwhelming the kids with too much homework and assigments. Now learning online, it became even easier for teachers and schools to give kids even More homework to do. There must be a balance, they are only kids, they need time to live and enjoy their childhood.

I'm an adult teacher, I teach chemistry in primary school for adults. It's near to impossible to teach them anything. Many have difficult background, are just not so independent at learning, head trauma because of car accidents. I really can't teach them much via video. Now we are able to have live class and it feels much better.

Here in Sri Lanka, my brother didn't able to visit school for almost two years now. And the thing is due to lack of internet infrastructure and electronic devices lots of people lagging behind. And they don't operate in normal school time because most kids using there parents laptop or mobile and because parents work in day time most of school schedule held on nigh. Other thing is electricity brake down, in my country electricity is very unreliable even he using a mobile device the internet connection get lost. And my brother's grade getting low, day by day. He is not interested like before due to lack of competition. It's really a big problem right now. How much we try to make him focus in his studies, there are so many things here to make his distracted.

my niece is 4.5 year old has gotten a year and half old in these times. She has been attending online classes and she doesn't enjoy the class at all. Its boring and her learning and playing has taken a HUGE hit. Kids her age go to school to play with friends and have fun conversations about the cartoons they watch and what not. But due to this pandemic she is stuck at home. Till Delta variant things were still a bit okay, now she is completely stuck in home as her parents won't let her out cuz of the fear. I play with her all day long but I can tell she misses her friends and school. Whenever I inquire her answer is ... YESS!! I miss school & friends. They said it will open soon, now I don't know when will that happen." I have to distract her ASAP 'cuz I don't want her to feel totally sad. I hope things get better soon and she and all the kids around the world start playing and learning again. I hope their mental toll won't read to a highest that they become dependent on medicines at their age.

The pandemic started in my last year of highschool and I couldn't really get out of my house....even I had severe learning problems as a senior in highschool and with good facilities.... I feel sad for these children especially because lost time at this age is much more critical than for older people. Six months for a primary pupil can feel like eons. The old school pattern was also fraught with its problems but is the only solution to isolate pupils at home with a machine. There are other solutions like community hubs, library gatherings, anything to restore human contact and the secret factor of good teaching and learning which comes from the heart. Children feel if someone cares because there is time and effort involved.

Picture this, in Colombia most kids don't have access to electronic devices or internet, they do what we call "radio validation" basically they have to hear the radio to take their lessons (this happens the most in rural areas), 45% of the country lives in poverty and as a Colombian student, this kids have everything to take proper online lessons. I'm supposed to be part of the "privileged middle class" but the internet sucks, teachers aren't enough qualified to work in virtual environments so we do, we don't have much reliable information since books are expensive, I have to ask for pictures of textbooks, and you know, my parents barely earn enough to survive due to all the employment crisis, thanks God they stayed at their jobs , libraries, were I used to take tons of references for are closed, an the social, political and health crisis are making this unlivable. I can't be ungrateful, because as I mentioned before, my situation isn't as hard as it's been al this year for some people but I'm a truly believer the unique way to progress as a human and asa nation is through education, something politicians know and they are not going to give to keep the community silent.

It is like homeschooling, except its instruction from a teacher and not the parent. So you get the advantage of fewer distractions, and traveling, and you can also go to sleep early and wake up late. No having to deal with stupid stuff on the way to school or at school. I can excersise whenever I want too!
