The Line and Legacy of Rick Bartow
In the spring and summer of 2015, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon in Eugene presented the special exhibition Rick Bartow: Things You Know But Cannot Explain. Featuring nearly forty years of the artist’s work in a range of media - drawings, paintings, sculpture, prints and mixed media-the exhibition and is accompanying catalog honored one of Oregon’s most important contemporary artists and one of our nation’s most significant Native American artists. Curated by Danielle Knapp, the museum’s McCosh Associate Curator, and Jill Hartz, its executive director, the retrospective travels to other museums across the country in 2016-18.
Thanks to a grant from The Ford Family Foundation and Ballinger Endowment funds, the museum commissioned Rick Bartow to create a series of prints at the University of Oregon, with the assistance of Mika Boyd, print technician and Charlene Liu, associate professor in the Department of Art. The drypoints created as part of this project are being given to museums and Native American centers in the Northwest, lenders to the exhibition and museums taking the show. In addition, Rick created a set of monoprints (with drypoint, chine-collé., drawing and hand painting) that now have a permanent home at the Schnitzer Museum.
This film documents the creation of those works.

Fascinating! Thank you! Printing in Plexiglass is challenging since the line wears up pretty easily. For this amazing printing work I would be using copper plate etched in a bath of ferric chloride. Also, using printmaking inks highly pigmented, like Gamblin or Akua are great! I love Rick's work! Thank you!
