Biosyns - Oh, pulleeeze. What Jo Brand said, in essence, was that Mock the Week was so competitive that participating wasn't enjoyable. Just in this one ep, you can see the sole woman consistently overridden, so that she barely gets a chance to deliver a single line. This is unfortunately all too common on MtW for women and newcomers. Some of the more established performers, particularly Hugh Dennis, kill the friendly, convivial atmosphere usually found on these comic panels show. If Hugh has gotten off 14 zingers, he'll still step forward for a 15th -- even if his take is cheesy and not worth the aggro. He seems to take a certain glee in blocking the other performers from getting a chance. Unlike the female comics who've guested, and some of the decent males (David Mitchell and some others whose names escape me), if Hugh steps forward at the same time as someone else, he never gives way, always dominates. I've seen the same behavior, though less often, from Ed Byrne and various others.

Frankie never cared who else wanted a go and Hugh seemed to take his cue from that. Since Frankie left the show, Hugh seems to have mellowed somewhat on that score. I have heard that Frankie may have been "let go" for this reason. If that's the case, maybe Hugh was instructed to be a bit better at sharing. I think that it's fair to say that Frankie and Hugh have the most material but they could still afford to be the one to make way at times. Frankie pretty much never did unless the other person was already a step ahead and Hugh rarely did but does seem to a bit more these days. I think that there's a fair chance that Frankie's a psychopath but he's still very funny though. Being left-leaning myself, I still think so.

@@wunnell well that was informative if nothing else lol i haven't watched the show for years, tried up to i think season 13 or something a couple years back but got bored with it. didn't Frankie once say he actually took a psychopath test online and passed? i think i heard that somewhere, though there's different kinds and i don't think he's a murdering psychopath or anything, just kinda selfish and inconsiderate but not evil, and he can be very funny, just also very over-bearing and dark with his comedy sometimes

@@professorbaxtercarelessdre1075 , it was an episode of WILTY on which I saw him mention it and I thought that he said that it indicated that he was a psychopath. Not sure whether that's considered a pass or fail. I'm also not sure whether he was being truthful or it was a bit. I certainly don't think that he's a serial killer, regardless. There are psychopaths who behave as decent society would expect for pragmatic reasons though. Either way, I thought that he was funny before I knew his political leanings and still do. He can be overbearing but he always seems to play well on NWO. Of course, it might be hard to get guests back if he didn't.

There was a folk story about a pig faced woman, & by the 1800s someone had figured out that that might be something people would pay to see. There were already captive bears, so what you would do is get one of them drunk, shave the bear & put it in a dress, then charge people money to see & talk to it. If you want a bear with natural hair-loss, mange will do that. There's a theory that a lot of cryptid sightings were really people seeing bears with mange and thinking "good lord, what can that be?".

There's no doubt that Frankie and Hugh come up with the most material for these things but they also don't give a shit about anyone else. I never once saw Frankie make way for anyone else unless they were already a step ahead and Hugh wasn't much different. Not everyone is as assertive/aggressive as that and so those people end up being basically run over.

@@professorbaxtercarelessdre1075 , fair call. I'm probably middling on the assertiveness scale and that's probably dropping as I get older. Some people seem to have this idea that anyone who becomes a stand-up comedian must be a diva who loves the spotlight and so anyone who doesn't grab the spotlight in situations like this is expecting it to be given to them but that's not realistic at all. The reasons to get into comedy are many and varied and comedians still have the same range of human foibles as the rest of us. They can certainly be intimidated by other comedians and it's also easy to forget that Frankie and Hugh are there every week while many others are there significantly less often and others barely at all. I don't know but this might have been Lauren Laverne's first appearance and many would defer to the regulars under those circumstances, especially if those regulars were as bold as Frankie and Hugh.

To be fair to her: she's not a comedian, unlike the others. She did hold her own on the rest of the episode though, actually pretty funny. But as a non-comedian this kind of one-liner stuff isn't easy. Her Simon Cowell joke, for example, on another episode was simply brutal.
