James Earl Jones and Jeremy Irons have *ICONIC* voices. If they were in a room of 50 people, you could pick out their voices easily. Having them play the powerful father and the scandalous villain was perfectly cast.

Mufasa's death and Simba finding him at the bottom is genuinely my first emotional scar from childhood haha. I BAWLED my eyes out as a kid during that scene, it still upsets me now.

I was in 4th grade and I remember the complete disbelief I experienced when Mufasa died. It was my first interaction with loss and grief I had ever experienced. I couldn't believe they were showing us the movie. It took me a while to recover. Regardless, this is such a great movie and has always been an important part of my life!

I turned 3 the year this movies came out. Never saw it in theatres, and in fact the earliest movie I can remember seeing in theatres is The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996). I might have gone earlier, but I can't recall. After that I know I saw Mulan, Tarzan, Dinosaurs etc. Always went with my mom though. I can only remember having my dad with me once, and that's when the whole family went to see A Bug's Life (1998). 🤔

Young Simba was voiced by JTT, who was a ‘90s heartthrob but the singing voice belongs to Jason Weaver who has had an incredible career…he will always be paid from The Lion King because his mother got his contract situated RIGHT - his royalties will keep rolling in and I love that for him. He’s put in a lot of work since a young boy, he even played young Michael Jackson.

I was lucky enough to see Hans Zimmer live a month ago, he and all the musicians he works with are absolutely amazing. For their performance of the Lion King, they had the original singer, Lebo M., with them, and he still radiated so much joy singing this almost 30 years later. The cherry on top was that the female singer who accompanied him and had been killing it all night, was Lebo M.'s daughter Refilwe who had gone on to become a singer and tour and perform on stage with both of them in front of 10 000 people. Fun little fact: You notice how After Scar confesses to killing Mufasa Nala is the first lioness in action _immediately_ 24:16 and as such She's the first on to get to Simba and Slap the Hyenas off him! And Simba uses Nalas move to defeat Scar 25:33 That's a ride or die fight side by side right there! I love this movie, Nala was my first favourite Disney character and Simba and Nala are my OTP!

the most hilarious part about this is that in the novel, we learn that scar's name is taka. in swahili, the name mufasa means "king" and the name taka means "garbage". the parents literally named their kids king and garbage 🤣 no wonder scar hated everyone and became the villain LOL (i know the name can have other meanings, but i understand that particular translation is the most commonly used)

There was a deleted scene that I feel should have stayed in where after Scar takes the throne he asks Nala to be his queen leading to reprise of Be Prepared where he introduces the hyenas into the Pridelands and Nala’s banishment when she refuses him and she goes looking for Simba who she thinks is still alive, Also the film was nominated for four Oscars winning for Best Original Score for Hans Zimmer and was nominated for Best Original Song for Hakuna Matata, Circle of Life, and Can You Feel the Love Tonight winning for the latter. James Earl Jones and the woman who plays Sarabi previously played the King and Queen in Coming to America, During the song “Be Prepared” Jeremy Irons blew out his voice singing “You won’t get a sniff without me”. So the rest of the song was sung by Jim Cummings who is also the voice of Ed.

Lions with higher testosterone have dark or even black manes. The higher testosterone also makes them more aggressive and unpredictable. I think Disney characterized Scar that way because of his aggressive, plotting nature...and also because Disney villains always wear black. Of all the documentaries about lions I've ever seen, I've seen maybe two lions with black (in their) manes and they were the most amazing lions I've ever seen. I think lions actually like water. It's just that in the wild, the water is a dangerous place and there's no cover for protection. But, in zoos, I believe they enjoy the water... I think. If you ever get the chance see the Broadway tour of The Lion King. The way they do the animals is one of the most incredible real life things I’ve ever seen. It also killed me when Mufasa died, everyone was trying not to cry, and this little girl’s voice in the row in front of me suddenly pleads “…. What‘s wrong with Mufasa??”

I was in the Navy when this came out, and an Army officer I knew from way back, was visiting the Norfolk area when this was playing. I couldn't get too far from the base--our command had a lot going on--so we opted for the just off-post theater, and given what else was playing, this was what we settled on. The canyon scene, is the only time in my life, that I ever saw this officer cry during a movie. He passed away 15 years ago. I miss you, Dad. 😥

There's a theory that Mufasa's ghost was actually a manifestation of Simba's guilt for "committing" his murder and for leaving the Pridelands. Mufasa does live in Simba, his spirit will always be with him, he just does not exist. But he is real to Simba and to the rest of the Pridelanders, his memory still lives on. Mufasa is dead but his memory lives on through Simba.

I love the messages in this movie. Simba starts out as a boy hanging out with his apathetic friends always having fun and never taking on any responsibility. When Nala confronts him on how he's become a pathetic loser frolicking in the jungle while his family starves, he finally starts his transition into manhood by taking responsibility and bearing his burden as protector of the pride lands. I think this movie has more relevance now than ever as men are increasingly living in a perpetual state of boyhood, neglecting or abandoning their families and responsibilities for fleeting moments of superficial pleasure and never taking on their responsibilities, never making that transition into manhood. I show this movie to my kids every time they ask for it.

Lion King! My all time favorite Disney animation. Great characters, great story, great songs. And it’s loosely based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

"I Just Can't Wait to be King" gives me flashbacks to that horrible level on the Sega Genesis Lion King game. I died so. Many. Times. Also that scene with Simba crying beside Mufasa's body traumatized a generation, I swear.

As far as size goes Simba was still a very "young adult", and also lived off bugs haha. He'll grow with a Lion's diet and age

Not many people know but lion king 1 1/2 is the story of timon and pumba and extra background that makes you rethink the original movie

this movie hit me as a ten year old and drove me to learn to animate and draw anything. I have the little simba symbol as a tattoo. Even all these years later every frame, every note, every line just feels like mana from heaven. Was so cool seeing someone experience it for the first time:) speaking of practical effects, the shimmer of the fire in the scar vs simba scene was a complete accident. They processed the flame and lighting effects but it messed up when being transferred to cells creating a strange distortion- so they utilised it for this film! amazing that the only CGI in this film was the stampede too. The modern remake sucked the soul out of the original, i dont recommend you watch that ever. See you for the next one x

When Rafiki chants 'Asante sana, squash banana', he's partially speaking Swahili. 'Asante sana' means 'thank you'. You can also hear it in the A-Team movie, when Murdock (Sharlto Copley) is speaking with the passport inspector at the airport. By the way, Rafiki is voiced by Robert Guillaume, who played the title role in the sitcom 'Benson'. Nathan Lane (Timon) and Ernie Sabella (Pumbaa) worked together again a few years later in the Broadway revival of 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum', as Pseudolus and Marcus Lycus respectively.

Scar was originally supposed to be a rouge Lion from a different pride but the plot changed to a betrayal so that's why they look different & Mufasa has no idea that Scar has an army of hyenas nor how evil he is being from a different pride altogether.

Fun fact: All the lion roars in this movie were supplied by tigers as they have deeper and louder roars than lions - they sounded better

Lions mature pretty quickly. Some people seem to think the time jump is huge, but its probably like 2 or 3 years max. Simba was probably about a year old when Mufasa died and lions are mature by 3 or 4. They usually don't start challenging for pride leadership until 5 or 6, but Scar was a little bitch, Simba could've fucked him up at 3 or 4 easily.

The Japanese did an animation about a Lion before this movie came out. Kimba the white Lion is pretty much the exact same story.
