Great presentation! It brought back many memories of the Hudson that my uncle bought for me in the early 1960's for $15! It was the only Lionel loco that could simultaneously pull all 22 boxcars that I owned. I could also make the train longer but with even a 4' diameter circle, if you didn't place the heaviest cars in the front of the train, the cars would tip over on the curve! I have to thank my uncle in many ways, as selling the loco in the early 70's allowed me to get into O Scale 2 rail, that lead to the purchase of a Niagara, which I have to this day. My present project is a custom made 4-12-2, with all flanged drivers! I am estimating at least a 7' radius curve for this monster!

072, wow. I figured it would run on at least 036 track. I didn't know they even had that wide of radius track in 1937. That's still my dream engine. I would have to change the rear coupler though.

Terrific video. You are right, it took me 20 years to acquire my first prewar scale Hudson. Fortunately, I was able to acquire another a few months later. Pure luck. Mine are ‘37 and ‘39. Honestly, I like the ‘37 and think it’s superior to the ‘39. Thanks for posting. Very informative.

My uncle was a dealer service center. He had a couple of these if not more .. He sold 2 of them for 10,000 a piece. I'm glad I listened to this man he told me what to buy and when.

If you want to run your Hudson you can increase the cow catcher gap above the center rail by modifying a replacement cow catcher without modifying the frame. Suggest not modifying an original cow catcher, keep it orgional at all costs.

How about putting electrical tape under the bottom of the cow catcher to avoid it shorting on the center rail? I’m guessing that could bother some purists. I’m lucky enough to have seen a grey Hudson with round tender in November 2022. It was amongst a fascinating varied collection which all by itself could be a museum.

You don't put electrical tape on the bottom of a $4,000 engine.

That and the outrageous cost for anything Lionel is why I went to American Flyer. I can get a AF Hudson for less than $200. 2 rail track too.
