Vidya's plan is breathtakingly stupid. Political marriages only work between parties whose interests are broadly aligned. Marrying into your enemy, especially a more powerful one, will only help them, not you. Worse, the Governor is ultimately just a middle manager doing the bidding of the British state. A state that is politically much more cohesive than the Bengal nobility probably is. It can't be outsmarted with legal maneuvering. Any advantages that Vidya thinks such a marriage can bring are ultimately just technicalities that British can swat like so many insects if they become a problem. The whole point of having power is that the rules only apply when it suits YOU and everyone else has to obey them all the time. And the colonizers are the ones with the power here.
