Yay! I am starting my first arrow row. Love this pattern. I was able to find the vintage dk by Berrocco and chose color sloe berry - kind of a heathered, muted purple. Would love to know what colors others are making. When I am making such a long chain I put stitch markers every 25 stitches so if I lose count I dont have to go back to beginning. It really helps to see how you begin and end each row, Bonnie, because that is where I get confused and mess up adding stitches or taking them away. Thank you Bonnie!

Thank you Sonja! I did recently remake this in a light worsted weight yarn (Berroco Ultra Alpaca), however their Vintage DK yarn is excellent. You may be able to find this at discount prices as the holidays approach. I think using a thicker lower cost acrylic (like Red Heart) will produce a stiffer, unyielding fabric with this design.

Personally I would stick with a solid color on this design. The color changes will compete a bit too much with the textures I think.

@@BonnieBayCrochet I have noticed that even when something says a 3 or 4 that their sizes can be the same. Would the cupcake be the same thickness that we are looking for in the yarn for this project. That will give me a better guide for what yarn to buy. Thank you for your time.

I LOVE this pattern and am really enjoying how relaxing it is to crochet. But I'm having some trouble with the gauge on this pattern and am hoping someone sees this comment and can advise. Has anyone else had issues with getting it to the dimensions described? I've been crocheting for a while never really had any problem with crocheting too tight, and my project has really nice stretch and flowiness to it, so I don't think it's a problem of tight stitches. I bought the exact yarn described and started with the recommended I(5.5mm) hook, but I ultimately moved up to a J(6.0mm) hook when my 252 stitches didn't come anywhere near where they should have (by my calculations, at 15sc/4", the stole without the trimming should be about 67 inches, give or take.). I've been working with the J hook and loving the outcome, but I just got to the end of the stole portion (minus the edge row) and when I measured it, it comes in at about 55 inches by 10"! I've really never had any issues with crocheting too tight, as I said, and all my rows are turning out just like the picture, without any shortening or tightening around the Low Front Ridge slip-stitch rows. Any insight into why this project might be turning out so much smaller for me than the pattern describes?

I don't own this design (it was sold to Annies/Crochet World Magazine many years ago), but I will try to help if I can. Do your directions match what I am teaching in the video? If so, they shouldn't be off so much.

Hi, Bonnie! I love the look of the finished shawl and am so excited about completing such a beautiful piece. I'm basically a beginner so may be in over my head. I have been working on this for the last 2 months. I'm hoping you can prevent me from ripping it all out and starting over a third time. My stole is measuring 65" long and only about 13" wide. I really want the drape as pictured. Have toyed with a few options, like adding another arrow row and woven section, but not sure what adjustments I'd need to make to the back portion. Do you have suggestions, or am I doomed to starting over? I wish the pattern had measurements for each "section." (Arrow section, woven section, lace, etc.) It might have saved me. Definitely glad I found your videos they help a lot!! Thanks for any help you can give!
@BonnieBayCrochet
@BonnieBayCrochet 4 жыл бұрын
You are about spot on for the width of the stole portion. If you add the back to this you should get plenty of coverage. The drape (or lack thereof) may be due to the yarn used, or possibly the tightness of the crocheting? It is hard to say without seeing the fabric in person. You may be just fine to continue on and make the back and add to the stole. Wishing you the very best Amy!

Just want to be sure I understand properly. The 2nd woven stitch row, you are placing the woven stitch in the open space between the previous rows stitches and not b into a stitch itself? Love the arrow stitch. Can the woven stitch be used on its own for a blanket? Has the woven stitch been done using a dc before? Interesting stitch.

Could you please give a weight for each ball or hank of yarn please? In Ireland it is sold by weight, also the hooks are done in mm sizes as well, what is an I in mm please. Would it also work if you do a double (single) crochet foundation chain? Many thanks, an Irish crochet fan.
@BonnieBayCrochet
@BonnieBayCrochet 5 жыл бұрын
Each hank is 3.5 oz. Here's more information on the yarn: www.berroco.com/yarns/vintage-dk. An "I or 9" hook is 5.50 mm. You can try the foundation chain if you would like, but the pattern calls for working on both sides of the chain. Wishing you all the very best Karen! I hope to visit your beautiful country again.

That is going to be very thick for this project. I would strongly recommend sticking with a DK weight yarn. Any DK yarn (wool, or acrylic or blend) should work. I would however stay away from cotton because of the weight of that yarn.

Dear Bonnie, I've found you a few weeks before and I finished the Gaithersburg stole. I just need to make the fringe, but I'm waiting the steamer that I ordered. Even if I started that stole with 24 more chains, the stole is too short for me! I'm 172 cm tall. I would really like to make this stole, too, but I'm "scared" a little bit if will gonna be long enough for me! Another problem is, I don't like to work with large hook! What do you think, Bonnie, if I use 4,50 mm crochet hook and start with 12×4 more stitches, will be OK? I know, you are very busy, but hopefully you will help me! Sorry for my English! I grew up with my Grandmother who was a beautiful crocheter and she thought me at a young age to make pineapple dollies however, she could not read patterns, she just looked at the pictures. @BonnieBayCrochet 7 жыл бұрын
This design uses a DK weight yarn, which is thinner than Caron Simply Soft yarn. Caron Simply Soft LIGHT yarn should work very well though, if you can find it. I believe AC Moore stores still carries it, and you may be able to find it on-line as well. The color palate is limited though. It might be worth a trip to a yarn shop to see what is available in your area. There are many excellent DK weight yarns on the market today. Two that come to mind are Berroco's DK Comfort yarn (nylon/acrylic blend), and Cascade's DK Cherub (acrylic/nylon), and both are economically priced.

Hi Bonnie, I am having a lot of trouble getting my arrow rows to look nice. I have enough yarn to make 3 of these and I'm feeling discouraged. Would it work to substitute braided cable for arrow?
@kimdepagter6390
@kimdepagter6390 6 жыл бұрын
I bought your book of Contemporary Celtic Crochet and love the way the cable looks on cover photo. My previous comment should not have said braided cable but just cable.
@BonnieBayCrochet
@BonnieBayCrochet 6 жыл бұрын
kim de pagter if you can send me a photo of the trouble I’ll be happy to look at it to see whether I can help you. You can send photos to bonniebay@me.com. The braided cable is crocheted vertically, whereas the arrow is a horizontally crocheted stitch, so I don’t recommend this as a substitute.

Just the plain old cable runs horizontal, right?
@BonnieBayCrochet

Yes, the cable stitch (see attached video link) can be a substitute, although this seems like a more difficult stitch than the Arrow to me. It is a lovely stitch and one of my favorites! Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aneneK1piLyKlbM

The stole portion of this design does tend to be on the longer side. You may actually want to use a smaller hook, or make the stole shorter by using fewer stitches.

This is also a Susan Bates but with a bamboo handle. Here's a link to the store where I found these: acmoore.com/product/104236431/silvalume-bamboo-handle-crochet-hooks/675281. They also carry another Susan Bates hook with a handle they call "soft" that is even better. I can't crochet without this brand!

BonnieBayCrochet I thought the woven stitch looked smaller but it measures 3 3/4” and every other rows are exactly what you showed. I put my heart in this beautiful work and just like your other videos I have made. I don’t know how to send a picture from my iPad but I will try. Actually it looks just like you showed but the woven stitch finish looks smaller.

@@kathyhlinak6395 What yarn did you use? How does your gauge measure? I'm sorry you are having difficulty with this. One solution is to work more rows of woven stitches to widen the stole.
@BonnieBayCrochet
@BonnieBayCrochet 5 жыл бұрын
I am currently working on this project and I believe the measured width on the stole is incorrect. Mine is 15" wide, and not 17". Not sure where this error occurred, but I wanted to make you aware.

BonnieBayCrochet I used a 4 ply yarn, however I used a H/8-5.00MM crochet hook. Did the hook make the difference? I will have to start over because my measurements are 59x12

The instructions say the stole should be 77" long. Is that with the lace ? I'm on the lower ridge row after the woven stitch and it's measuring 64".
@BonnieBayCrochet

I believe this is the measurement with the added lace. The weight of the stole will also add inches.

Hi Evelyn! It is another word for skein, except that hanks need to be wound into a ball or cake of yarn when purchased, kind of like the old days. Here's a video of me winding one of these: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5LYaaqnjNGHosk

I might have tried this if I could see the actual sweater. There is only one tiny profile picture of a red sweater that I can't really see. All three videos show you how to knit something that you never get to see the end result. No pictures, no modeling a finished project. So I'm passing on this one.
