David, I am 48 years old and I discovered your blog just a short time ago. Since then, I've changed my life for the better- working out, buying "Bond" clothes, and living that Bond experience. I grew up with Roger Moore and you've re-inspired me! Thank you on behalf of my family. Keep up the great work!

This is a great video especially since I read Dr. No before watching any bond movie and that's where my love of bond came from that book and if course Flemming. I always thought he was probably a rockstar it's crazy to know that he was envied by so many when he was alive and criticized unfairly.

I should have known you already came across Mr. Dun's exquisite research and wonderfully detailed article. Everyone needs to read the source material! Thanks to the both of you for all that you do. As Jeremy recognises, the first chapter of Free Agent is reminiscent of a Bond scene but in addition to that, it is utterly brilliant and i have reread it several times. It's a terrific set up. I loved Free Agent.

Seeing me reading Dr. No my mother-in-law mentioned she'd read it too when it originally came out in 1958. I asked her, "When you read are you James Bond, or Honey Rider?" She said: "Oh, I'm James Bond." Taught me an unexpected but important lesson in reader perception.

He started a whole new category, in his writings and it moved further . The despatches type of descriptions of the persons and character, and reading between the lines. Blending pshycology and a own and others experiences into on a all new way. And in culinary way the menus he wrote about there was sure something that many was envious of also. Martinis, avocado pears, roasts, shaken cocktails etc. Reminds me of back home, so many people was envious on thinking dofferent or trying a new recipe Or spices . " to refuse one self was good " was a saying And that aint many years ago. Have a look at" The Supersizers go the ' 50s program,"they mention Fleming a bit there My experiences about Fleming, he may have been one source i have been following much to since was a kid and introduced to him by family. Also the natural way of appear like you belong in a area or on an occassion like you always have been there is a element of his millitary service he wrote into Bond. And that bit took experience.

Hey David, this was an awesome interview! One of my favorites that you’ve done. It’s ridiculous how Fleming is almost more respected for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang than James Bond. Off topic question, are you planning on reviewing Bond’s white tuxedo? It’s one of the most iconic looks from Goldfinger, Octopussy, and Spectre

Ian Fleming is HUGELY respected as an author, although I started reading the novels back in early 1970s. So younger viewers probably won't know. But books were extremely popular in UK and USA etc.since Casino Royale in 1952.

Thanks for this video. Just what I needed to start learning about Ian Fleming.I've only come to Fleming's literary Bond this year which made me curious about Fleming who left this world far too early. Here is my Amazon review of "From Russia with Love": --- For several decades, I have had this persistent itch to at least read one James Bond novel to see what inspired the movie franchise. I didn't have high expectations. With the films (which I love) as the only point of reference, I was expecting disposable pulp fiction. So I started at the beginning of the series with Casino Royale and was blown away by the quality of the writing. I only planned to read one novel in the series and now I am currently on the 7th (Goldfinger). Hopefully, you'll be hooked like me. You'll find Fleming's literary Bond much more vulnerable than the screen version (which makes him even more courageous) and to channel the Beatles, "he gets by with a little (lot) of help from his friends". While the Bond stories are great, I'd urge you to read them just for the quality of the writing. Fleming is right up there with the likes of Raymond Chandler and Conan Doyle. 'From Russia With Love' doesn't disappoint but please start from Casino Royale and read the series in sequence.

Very late to the party, but I read the novels as I started watching the films in order starting in the 90s as a teenager. When those ads for Goldeneye came out and Remington Steele emerged from silhouette saying “you were expecting someone else?” My genuine reaction was “yes. Who are you?” There might have been a few expletives as well. I liked Connery for the most part, but as a lover of Fleming, I knew that James Bond wasn’t a “nice guy.” He didn’t have a line for everything. He could be dower, grouchy, pompous, arrogant, self-important, and chased women, drank and took drugs (which are never mentioned in the films) to quell the noises in his head from the job he had to do. That’s the James Bond I became interested in, because while being cool, he seemed human and attainable rather than a superhero. Actors over the years have captured elements of that to varying degrees, with Dalton probably coming closest and Craig in Casino Royale, but as we’ve seen, the original literary character isn’t something fans of the movies want at all. That to me is very disappointing, but if you grew up with 80d American action movies, or even the Brosnan’s, that’s understandable.

I think Fleming was class, and to be in your prime, mid 20th century, would've been a lot more fun than now, despite the H bomb shadow. I love the references to good living, in Flemings' books. More so than anything else.

Great interview. @18:51 he mentions Ben Hecht. I never knew that. Interesting also to know Ben wrote "Perfidy" and was later run over by a car because he called out the Je3uits as the perpetrators of all world wars via Mi6. Have you read, "The Last Great Secret of WW2?" by Christopher Creighton? That book is part two to, "Hitler was a British Agent" by Greg Hallett and the Spymaster, which gives much detail as to what Ian Fleming really did during WW2. Fascinating books! Oh and one more, get "The Most Secret Mountbatten Report". That's really the three books that shed light on MI6 and Fleming.
