A very beautiful performance indeed. The prima ballerina is Alina Somova (a prodigy in ballet who danced the Dance of reed flutes from The Nutcracker at a very early age). In the past, Maya Plisetskaya danced the main role (The young tsarina) in this ballet. Thank you very much for sharing this gem of Russian ballet!

This was SO good. I loved the casting, choreography, costumes. The music sounded the best I had ever heard it. Because this production is a little abstract (though gloriously acted), I am glad I watched some other productions before I saw this version. I really loved this. Thank you.

So rare and engaging ballet! The choreography is impeccable! so are the customs.

Whereas the stage settings do not begin to match the color and opulence of Shchedrin's brilliant score, this production is nonetheless totally engaging, vivid, and enchanting. The characters practically LEAP off the stage; the imaginative choreography and the electricity of the performers are so strong that I didn't miss lavish sets at all. The production perfectly captures the fantasy in a youthful, fresh and charming way, which is ideal for an artless, old-world fairy-tale. I'm not generally a ballet guy, but I was thrilled and moved by the way that the action...the overall stage "picture" down to the gestures and subtle facial expressions....helped shape and define not only the characters but, most importantly, the MUSIC itself (check around the 59:30 mark, and Ivan and the Princess' first meeting; it absolutely rings true, his rather boorish "foolish" behavior, her elegant but giggly restraint). Everything (eg: the brother's opening dance...when the young ladies come sashaying in and the guys signal to them their kid brother is a bit nutty) is a perfect match between the visual tone/action and the character of the music. Beautifully done. (Note: as is common, this production only uses about three-fifths of Shchedrin's total score...but less might actually be better in this case, since the results are so superb. Love the use of the music's final grand peroration as bow music). LR

It's a great pity about Vladimir Shklyarov. He was a great dancer with a polished technique, talented... It's a great pity that he passed away so early.
Hi. Good afternoon. I'm new to this ballet and trying to understand it better. Could anyone please tell me what the dancers dressed in green, some with top hats, represent? I mean what are they? The same goes to the dancers, male and female, wearing skirts; they appear when Ivan goes for the wedding ring and meets the Princess of the Sea. Last question: when Ivan is in the water box and the little humpbacked horse does the dance routine (begins around 1:28:48), is he casting a spell to help Ivan or is he just dancing to represent the agony of the expectation, not knowing whatever is gonna happen to his friend? I would appreciate if someone could clarify this to me. Thanks in advance. Sorry for the lack of choreography knowledge and also my English.

The people in green (some of them wear high hats) who appear at minute 00:21 are the people of the town in the fair where Ivan and his brothers go to sell the horses. They appear again at the end - when the tsar and Ivan enter the cauldron. The people who wear T-shirts with faces (they appear at the fair at the same time as the people in green) are the watchmen of the mayor. In the fair where Ivan and his brothers sell the horses, nobody can sell or buy anything without the permission of the mayor. He is the one who sees the beautiful horses Ivan and his brothers sell. And he is the one who calls the tsar - the horses are so beautiful that only the tsar can have them. This is from the original story by Pyotr Yershov. The story in the ballet is changed, but this tale is quite famous in Russia so people probably know who those people are. The people of the sea appear at 1:15:05 (more or less). They are dressed in blue and also have faces on their tops. This COULD be a reference to the original tale where the maiden is not a young tsarina as in the ballet, but "the daughter of the moon and sister of the sun". This is where you see the sea princess. The little humpback horse does a spell -it is not just agony. It is thanks to the horse's spell that Ivan comes out of the cauldron intact and handsome while the tsar dies. In the original, it is even more clear: the little horse dipped his nose in the cauldrons (there are three of them in the original story) and thus saves Ivan. The tsar dies in the original as in the ballet. I hope that this is helpful.

strange question does someone have a full cast list of characters or a program from a performance of little humpbacked horse??
@sato6114 жыл бұрын
www.mariinsky.ru/en/playbill/playbill/2012/3/17/1_1900/ The cast on this page is not of this performance but you can check the synopsis and the list of characters. Of this performance, the title role has cast list in French (the mare and sea princess are both danced by Anastasia Petushkova) Ratmansky is such a talented choreographer! Thank you for uploading this gem.
