I'm not surprised it wasn't good. To think Lin Manuel Miranda, who wrote Hamilton and Encanto's songs, wrote that awful scuttle song. When you said Ariel experiences no arc in the original, she just wants something for herself and gets it, I was reminded of a past comment from somewhere else. Ariel wasn't the one with the character arc, Eric was. Because Eric wanted the perfect girl, the girl with a beautiful singing voice who saved his life. But over time, he loses that fantasy of perfection and falls in love with Ariel, the silent sweetheart he has a lot of fun with. And I just love the fact that they both save each other multiple times in the animated ending. They work together and love each other.
@jonnyboy4289
@jonnyboy4289 6 ай бұрын
Actually, Ariel isn't the character with the arc. It's King Triton (and Sabastain, too). Ariel didn't need to change or have a character arc because her want to to go to the surface because she sees humans as good people while Triton (and Sabastain) see humans as dangerous. So, Ariel's need is to stay away from humans. But, in the end, Ariel was proven right and Triton was mistaken. The surface is where she belongs and not all humans are bad (However, she did strike a deal with Ursula and put everyone in danger. We all make mistakes. But, we need to learn and grow from our mistakes. IDK. Is it really worth getting so angry over?).

I think the biggest problem is that Disney push for themself to adapt thier old movies. Not the stories they used. Jungle Book I think changed so many things it helped it making it it´s own Movie. But everyone else are just trying to be the same but "fixing" the problem they feel there is in the movie. RaisorBlade mention that people felt Ariel was just after a man not understanding it is the whole surface world. Well I read some big singer or something going out not liking this version becuse she think it is still telling the message girls should give up everything for a man. So some are really thick headed or think they can´t think for themself. I like Aladdin but I did´t try to lie myself into being a prince to impress a princess. Or lie about myself for a girl at all. If you don´t think you can learn from a main character doing misstakes then you have unrealistic expectations of people in general. Like with Pinocchio not making him flawed in the Disney+ remake.

The idea of Triton and Ursula being siblings was actually going to be used in the 1989 little mermaid but I guess the writers decided not to add it. In this movie though they say they’re siblings but literally never explain anything. Why the hell is Ursula a Squid and triton a merman? If they’re supposed to be blood related. We don’t get any flash back scenes or anything to really explain the history of the 2 characters. And why the hell is Eric adopted now? If he’s adopted that literally means he’s illegitimate and is technically no longer a prince! All they had to do was cast a white woman to play his mother and leave out all the adoption bullshit. They had to take away Eric’s masculinity in this film and he literally doesn’t do anything. Doesn’t save Ariel from Ursula, and of course Disney decides to make Ariel a girl boss who somehow despite never been on a ship somehow knows how to steer a ships wheel with no legs? Tf?

I've given up on these remakes since "Beauty and the Beast" (and technically Aladdin, which I saw part of while visiting some relatives), so I'm skipping this one. I do hope, however, that Halle Bailey will at least have better films to work on in the future. As for Ariel in the original, while I can understand some of the complaints given to her, I still think there's some genuine charm in her character. Also, the Broadway show did a much better job at expanding on Ariel's desires while also having an equal understanding with her dad and maintaining what made her likable.

I personally disagree with these issues though, since I viewed it as more like how some people want to travel to other countries and explore their culture, and may even find love there. It also helps that Ariel showed interest in the surface world long before seeing Eric. That, and Ariel contemplated on whether or not to go through Ursula's deal, as shown during the latter's song, and still showed love for her family in the end (especially her dad).

I think you need to study a little more on your Greek Mythology Raisor. It's been established for a while now that Triton and Ursula were siblings. Their father was Poseidon, Greek God of the Seas. In Greek Mythology, Triton is literally the son of Poseidon and his mother is Amphitrite, who was a Sea Nymph or Nereid. Which is where the original legend of the mermaid is said to originate from. The Trident that Triton wields was passed down to him by Poseidon and it's said that the seashell that Ursula has was given to her by him as well.

Very much like Scar and Mufasa. “Why does HE get to be king?!” But yeah… the tentacles. The only thing I can think of is that Ursula did something REALLY AWFUL, like she brainwashed the humans to kill Triton’s wife or something, or nearly destroyed the sea kingdom. And so in punishment, not only did Triton banish her (to a place that’s like 20 minutes away and that his daughter finds with little trouble, but okay)… BUT he also used his staff thing to turn Ursula from a mermaid into an octopus. So I personally have no problem with Ariel being black in this movie. What I have a problem with is how some people are responding to it. It bothers me how many people are resorting to calling any who questions why Ariel is black a racist. You know that's not always going to be the case. They might not like it because they could think that Halle Bailey isn't a good fit for her or etc. It just seems extremely spiteful to accuse someone of being racist just because of that. Could you imagine if The Princess and The Frog came out today and people started accusing others of being racist just because they thought the movie was bad. It's the same thing as those left wing numbskulls who thought that anyone who gave Black Panther a bad review racist. It's so fucking stupid. I just wanted to get that off my chest.

Ariel’s sisters look like previous Disney princesses. You’ve got Elsa, Jasmine, Mulan, Tiana, Aurora, and Isabel from Encanto. The CGI on them is really bad. They move like marionette puppets. And why are they wearing clothes? If it’s fish scales, why does it look like Mulan mermaid is wearing a blouse with ruffled halter top straps?

Well, it’s no “Splash: The Musical”! 😂 For those who don’t get the joke, it’s the name of a fictional Broadway musical (albeit based on a real 1984 film) that was produced by the fictional Oliver Putnam in the Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building”.

To be fair, some of the changes in the 2023 live action remake such as *Ariel killing Ursula in the climax, Ariel singing about her first time on land (albeit through her inner thoughts), and Ariel’s multiracial sisters* existed in the 2007 Broadway show of the same name. In fact, alongside “Splash”, the 2007 Broadway show is a better live action remake of “The Little Mermaid”.

I'm probably one of the few black people who care less about being represented in media since entertainment is all I really care about. If this remake was at least halfway entertaining, I could forgive some of the changes made (even though some were justified by egregious lies or completely unnecessary). Sadly it wasn't. It only generated a "meh" feeling in me compared to the original, which holds an unshakable place in my heart. It wasn't atrociously bad, but it wasn't good as a standalone movie either.

I'm saying this as a vaguely-Little Mermaid Disney Adult who liked it, but still gave the movie a 6-7/10 at best. Disney didn't pick Halle due to to representation. They picked her based on merit, and then capitalized on the response from TikTok afterward. The belief that Halle got the role solely due to diversity initiatives is why so many of us think people are being racist. One of the main complaints with the other remakes like Beauty and the Beast was that they hired actors who couldn't sing and had to use autotune. The director was ready to dial it in until he watched the Grammys and saw an 18 year old girl not only performing at the ceremony, but using a similar vibrato and vocal tone to the original voice actress. He then found out she was already a Disney television/movie actress the company was happy with, a fan of the original film franchise, and a musician who could improvise appropriate changes to modernize the songs. Halle was also great with kids, good at interviews, and could sing the songs live for ceremonies. She still had to audition, and after the audition they tried to replace Halle by seeing hundreds of other actress including natural redheads. Don't you think any actress would be dying to star in this movie, just to get their name out there, even with the bad reputation of the remakes? White actresses had the chance to compete and they didn't get the role. After seeing the movie myself, as someone who even watched the TV show, Halle did an excellent job as Ariel. You could clearly read her emotions and intentions from her facial expressions even after she lost her voice. If I had one minor complaint, she didn't really do the big and goofy body movements that Sherri Stoner came up with for Ariel in the original movie. Separately, a lot of us do see similarities between Halle and Ariel, such as the small body, round face, the nervous giggles, etc. The other live action actresses don't resemble their characters, such as Lily James not looking like Cinderella; but they get passes because they're at least white. Halle should get the same pass. When people say things like "Halle should have just been Tiana", they're telling us all black women look and act the same - when Halle looks/sounds/acts far closer to Ariel than Tiana. Disney decides who Ariel is, like when they cast a latina actress in Once Upon a Time. I'm not speaking for all black people here; but a lot of black people have this same view. Stop saying Halle got the role due to representation alone. Like with the stage show, when the actors and audience told the producers they had a diverse cast, Disney's marketing team pounced.

If I wanted to watch a live-action version of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”, I will watch “Splash” (1984) instead. Sure, “Splash” was released by “Touchstone Pictures”, but since “Touchstone Pictures” was a LABEL created by Disney in order to release “mature content” without undermining the wholesome “Disney brand”, “Splash” still counts as a DISNEY film. Heck, “The Little Mermaid” was initially rejected by Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg out of concern that it sounded *too similar* to “Splash”. And well, they’re not exactly wrong about that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3yYkKZ9r8ierMU In fact, to avoid turning “The Little Mermaid” into an animated remake of “Splash”, the Disney animators gave Ariel *red hair* in order to distinguish herself from Daryl Hannah’s blonde mermaid character Madison from “Splash”: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpWwfppshLihZ7Mm15s

Unfortunately Tony Jay is not longer with us to give us another rendition of Hellfire, but I am sure there is someone out there who could do a good job. Could be freaking awesome. But of course it won't be. It's modern Disney we're talking about after all.

Here's the thing: changing the main character's race but not changing anything substantial about the story isn't real representation. What you've done is tell the same "white" story with the same "white" character just with a different skin tone. Instead of making unique stories with underrepresented groups like Turning Red, Encanto, etc., what they're doing is essentially telling minorities that they best they deserve is unoriginal table scraps. Besides, you know that Ariel will revert to being a white character when all the media attention, praise, and fan-protection is soaked up. This has happened with ALL the live-action Disney princesses. I went to Costco last month with my family, and toy section had nothing but white Ariel dolls and books. No black Ariel in sight. So even during the movie's marketing campaign, they were STILL pushing the white Ariel. Remember all the fuss about Raya being the first Southeast Asian princess? Only a year later after her movie's release and all of her praise, attention, and merchandise is GONE. It's literally just a bunch of rich white guys using minorities to push their crappy products. How on Earth is that "diversity" or "inclusive" when, after the predominantly white businessmen scoop up their profits, all mention of said "diverse character" vanish off of websites, shelves, park grounds, etc.? Spoilers: The upcoming Hispanic Snow White movie is going to be so pandering that it's gonna make Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs look progressive by comparison. And no, it's not because of race: it's about wanting higher quality films for people of all races and fighting predatory marketing campaigns that target already venerable minorities. (Also, I find it ironic that the same people defending Halle Bailey as Ariel were the same people who years prior were complaining that Naomi Scott was too white to play Jasmine- despite not actually being white- in the Aladdin remake and threw temper tantrums over an original white character being used in that same movie for a single scene.)

Doesn't a live version Little Mermaid exist? Oh wait. Once Upon a Time series does almost all the Disney characters live action alot better than the film adaptations. This movie felt kinda meh or okay. Rather watch Once Upon A Time series for something different. They removed alot important and good things of the original film. 1. Ursula true personality. This 4:05 is what Ursula really is. Overly confident and master schemer, she view as herself as beautiful and relishing very moment. Her eels actually maybe minions. But, she treat them like her children running errands for her. Also, she is a sore loser and actually cheats to prevent Ariel from beating her. The live action feels a little dial down version during the introduction scenes. 2. Chef Louis. 5:42 Why? He wasn't offensive or stereotype. He was a enthusiastic chief loves his job and takes pleasure serving food the royal family. 3. Sebastian. The live action is kinda meh. Original Sebastian is so expressive and dramatic for a royal advisor. 4. The Fluffy Dog. Max the Dog that greet Ariel and prevent Eric from marrying Ursula during of the movie? 5. Eric saving Ariel. Had to remove that redeeming moment from him? So, King Triton is correct and Ariel should go back home. Why does that scene look like that was ripped off from.... Oh wait! That princess and the frog where Tiana smash the talisman from witch doctor to stop his black magic deals. So, Tiana saved New Orleans from The Witch Doctor is not special since it was animated. But, Hailey Bailey's Ariel killing Ursula is special in real life? Oh irony. These remakes feels pointless now. If anything just watch Once Upon a Time series or another adaptation from another film studios over these remakes. Also, RaisorBlade. That intro is hilarious. 0:10 Oh no.
