Hans Christian Andersen is very loved here in Denmark and I am so happy that the world finally can read his Original stories. Hans Christian Andersen wrote these stories in a time of depression in Denmark. with banktrupcy, lost wars and lost land many danes was very sad these years and Hans Christian saw a lot of that and made them into his stories. His own life was also filled with a lot of sadness and it was first after his death people really began to pay attention and read his stories as they deserve to be read. Beside his stories he made songs aswell and also made the famous christmas heart that still today is sold world wide with very few people knowing they have his design in their homes. He was in many ways like the little mermaid and sometimes still is today.

It took Denmark many years to recognise him and for the world even longer which is funny because everywhere if you ask people do you know this story or this song or this poem people always know atleast 1. As an example then Disney's Frozen is also HCA. And it doesn't matter if you ask people in Asia, America, Europa or almost everywere and you could try test this around your friends see how many atleast knows one story but don't mention his name and see how many will tell you they know atleast 1. Many of his songs were even a surprice by many danes when they discovered they had been singing them for years. Which ironicaly is why Hans Christian Andersen stories in many ways were ahead of their time because its first now people begin to realise, how many of the stories is in all of us every day. In other ways HCA was trying to open up our eyes to see the world from another angle. The little mermaid had no tears and therefore she suffered more, how many times have everyone been in that situation of their lives when dreams was shattered. But i so agree that a Mainstream Movie about him would be what he would deserve. 200 years after he died he is still getting more populare everyday. His house in Odense still exist and is keep as he lived in it.

Ofcourse I preferred the Disney version because they were happier while the original works are tragic (in its own beautiful way) but as an adult, having experienced personal struggles, I began to appreciate the original stories even more, little mermaid is one of them ❤

In The Little Mermaid remake of this year I remember Scuttle saying that Ariel had to “kill the prince, no kiss the prince”. Nice little 1837 Easter egg there. Also the quote at the beginning of the movie is a line from the original story. I’m definitely re-watching the remake once it comes on video and keeping an ear on more references.

She isn't washed away, she gains a soul, she turns from immortal to mortal and enters Heaven because of her sacrifice which was out of genuine unselfish love. Her sisters, out of genuine love for her sacrifice their hair, and in turn the little mermaid spares a life out of genuine unselfish love which is why she becomes a "daughter of the air". The remake has so many subtle references to the original story. One thing I noticed in the 2023 remake is that Ariel’s tail is distinctive compared to other merfolk. The multicolored, iridescent effect and the way the dorsal fins drapes elegantly as she swims is unlike any other tail in the movie. It’s very apparent the producers of the film wanted to highlight Ariel as the most beautiful mermaid by making her tail the most unique and visually stunning. In the original story (heard at 30:51), the old mermaid tells the little mermaid that her tail is considered “so beautiful” among merfolk, but it’s seen as “ugly” by humans. This is shown in the remake when Ariel regains her voice and tail. The humans at the party look at her gorgeous tail with fear and repulsion. “For they do not know any better…”

I have to say this is a beautiful but tragic story that made me cry when I read it as a little boy. The story was way too sad to be a children’s story. The ending upset me greatly when I was little and I asked my mother why did the little mermaid have to die, it just wasn’t fair. None of my mother’s answers satisfied me then. I wondered why God didn’t save that little mermaid in the story. Even today, the ending never fails to bring tears to my eyes. I think it is because I’ve never experienced such pure love in my life. I find the purity of her soul and her pure love so moving. And heart wrenching. The irony is that Prince never even finds out how much that little mermaid sacrificed for his life. I wonder what tragedy Hans Christian went through in his life that made him write such a fatalistic love story. I’d like to think that what separates us from being just base animals is that potential to lift ourselves to be capable of such Divine love.

This was one of the saddest stories Ive known next to the little match girl. I actually teared up, and I don't cry easily. 😢❤ I heard that Han wrote this story because he had romantic feelings for another man that were not returned, and Han was heartbroken. So he wrote a story about a being who loves someone who she can never be with, and the heartbreak that comes with unrequited love and how far someone is willing to go for a chance at love.

It’s all artistic interpretation isn’t it. There are so many aspects of the classic fairytales that perhaps belonged in their time, with elements seeming slightly harsher by our own standards today than they would have done when they were first put down on paper. There’s no doubt that HCA was something of a tortured soul and certainly revelled in the obscure and often melancholic aspects of his own stories 📚

As a dane i can say that your picture of HCA is the same way we read his stories. HCA had in many years been in love with a woman he couldn't get and many rumors has also been towards his love life if any is true noone knows. and i agree HCA wouldn't have enjoyed the Disney ending cause he himself never experienced the happy ending. Many of his stories was first really accepted and understood after he died sadly. which also in a ways pictures The little mermaid, the ugly duckling and so many others. But one thing we know is that HCA is always present somewhere in his stories. HCA in many stories was many years ahead of their time which meant people in his own time didn't gave his stories the same worth and in ways that can be said about many time zones aswell until people began to actually read between the lines in his stories then people will discover many more layers to them. He is one of the main reason of why danish people changed as a culture.

I have always loved this story, but my friend and I were discussing it recently. And I opined that the Little Mermaid is actually a really selfish character. She has a beautiful home and a loving family, and she leaves them behind when she is only fifteen, and causes them terrible heartache when she leaves them for the world above. Also, she only decides to become a human after she discovers that if the prince falls in love with her, he can make her immortal, so she's using the prince for her own gain. She knows that she will die if he does not love her, yet subjects her family to grief when she does die. The only unselfish acts she commits are saving the prince from drowning and not killing him to save herself, as she realises he should not suffer for her own foolishness.

Great question! There’s no doubt that a large element of the little mermaid’s tragedy and heartache was removed to make a slightly more fun story for the kids. But whether that’s a negative or not is up for question. You can’t deny that some of the greatest Disney songs of all time appear in that movie, and it arguably started the “Disney renaissance” which led to Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King et al. HCA was a bit of a tortured soul, no doubt. So perhaps they should have put a disclaimer: “inspired by the work of Hans Christian Andersen” 🤷🏼‍♂️
