I'm a black women, this is clearly targeted to me and my kids. However me and my kids saw this movie, and my youngest asked me to put on the original when we got home. She did not enjoy this movie and wishes the real ariel was in. Totally heart broken. I wish disney used stories made by black people like me, i'm pretty sure Africa or South America have great story writers and folkore that is not being used.

I think i would enjoyed movie is it was not Little Mermaid European based, if it was new story based in Caribbean and changed characters names and all that cause from this video. Clearly a whole different story in alot of aspects, just a few changes here and there plus you could still use Little Mermaid as promotion for the movie like saying Inspired by, in same universe as, etc.

I’m black and the controversy and pandering surrounding this movie put me off from it. Kinda sad how this is supposed to be our little girls’ representation when Ariel will always be remembered as a white girl. (EDIT: And the black one as a pandering nuisance by most) I know and appreciate what they’re doing, but I’d personally prefer an original princess.

That “trashy Midwest high-school mermaid themed prom” remark hit home for me… 😅 Controversies aside, can we all agree how terrible the art direction is for Ariel’s sisters in this? I’m looking at the original and all they had was different scales colors. In here they look like they belong to different species of fish or those are some sort of dresses that fuse with their tails.
@madamefluffy4788
@madamefluffy4788 Жыл бұрын
And then they have the audacity to say the sisters all share the same mother and father (and the excuse to explain why they look nothing alike is that mermaid genetics are just different from humans). I have no issue with the sisters be diverse - but it's an insultthe audiences collective intelligence if Disney expect them to buy the sisters are all related by blood. Just say they're all adopted, and it would be fine/make perfect sense. It worked fine with Eric and his parents - why wouldn't it work with Triton and his daughters?

1.) Apparently one mer-king and one mer-queen can have seven daughters of varying different ethnicities and nobody asks any questions. 2.) Eric's supposedly a creep for not forcing himself onto the strange mute girl he's known for days at best and who's obviously coming onto him. 3.) Eric saving Ariel in the climax was for her father to see that not all humans were bad, and prove that he was a good enough husband for his daughter. 4.) Whoever told Awkwafina that she could rap should be on trial in the Hague for crimes against humanity.

It has been suggested that the primary goal of such remakes is to hold on to the intellectual property rights. Wouldn't want someone else to make an actually GOOD Little Mermaid movie, since Disney simply doesn't have it in them. Sort of like a dog vomiting on what it can't eat.

@@Croz89 to some extent maybe, but it’s more a lack of creativity or willingness to THINK. For example, with a quick MI-search “What are some public domain fairy tales which could make good Disney movies?” It gave me a list of five, from which I found an OG fairytale that could be a new original animated film: 👑👑👑👑👑👑 "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" is a fairy tale that was first published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812. The story follows twelve princesses who live in a castle with their father, the king. Every night, the princesses sneak out of their bedroom and dance the night away in a magical kingdom. The king is perplexed by his daughters' worn-out shoes and offers a reward to anyone who can solve the mystery of where the princesses go at night. Many suitors try and fail, but a young soldier named Fredrick is determined to solve the mystery. With the help of a magic cloak that makes him invisible, Fredrick follows the princesses to the magical kingdom and discovers their secret. The story has themes of adventure, mystery, and sisterhood. It's a fun and exciting tale that would make a great Disney movie. The princesses could be portrayed as strong and independent characters who are determined to live their lives on their own terms. The magical kingdom could be brought to life with vibrant colors and fantastical creatures. And the mystery of where the princesses go at night could keep audiences guessing until the very end. 👠🥿👠🥿👠🥿👠 That right there is why all these people are going to be out of a job. Because you can genuinely do creative work with MI, they just see it as some kind of essay-writing app.

One of the worst aspects of modern movies is simply the visual look. Everything is muted, foggy and has this silvery/golden hue on top. The only colors existing are teal/orange. It started some 10 years ago. Look at the modern Bond movies. Each scene is either totally teal, like Mermaid or bathed in a thick golden/bronze carpet.... it's so extremely exhausting to look at a modern movie. I remember reading months ago and criticism in casting, Rob Marshall claimed the second he saw Bailey he said 'That's Ariel!'. Funny seeing as how she looks, kinda weird and can't act worth a damn.

Good Lord, they kept the 'Triton and Ursula are siblings' crap? Anything to make Triton appear like an even more insufferable SOB (why do they hate this character so much?) Also, that end clip with the mermaid above water...why are they all bobbing/weaving around so strangely? (whether in the water on sitting on something - they're all weaving; it's so weird).

sadly they won't. they'll drink the kool-aid fed to them by the elite machines. If anything, it does them a great disservice. If Disney "cared" about blacks, they would've of chosen a fairytale from African, Black-American, Caribbean, Aboriginal, or Melanesian cultures, or from a book written about blacks. But they won't 'cause they fear it they won't make millions out of it from the Western masses.

I'm okay with them moving the setting to Jamaica/the Caribbean. But they should have had fun with it, made it colorful. Imagine blending "under the sea" with the junkanoo festival? There was creativity to be had, but Disney went with phoned-in garbage.
@irena4545
@irena4545 Жыл бұрын
Honestly, if they brought it over to the Caribbean... why even make it diverse instead of fully Caribbean? They could have used this different setting to their advantage and actually make something of it, instead of this garish stupidity (and whoever thought that red dreadlocks are a good idea, they were sorely mistaken, it looks like a head of earthworms).
@eowynsalvador
@eowynsalvador Жыл бұрын
The Caribbean... is diverse. Do you have any idea what you're talking about? Lol the Caribbean is a melting pot of African, European, and Asian ethnicities mixed up over the years. Maybe do your research on the place instead of going off of stereotypes you've heard.
@irena4545
@irena4545 Жыл бұрын
@@eowynsalvador And it was apparently a melting pot for all kinds of mermaids, not to mention that one really has to wonder about the king's marital arrangements. And that castle was probably teleported there or something. The point was that they merely took the old, tired European setting and plunged it into the Caribbean (why Caribbean, anyway?), and all they did with a fairly fascinating different location was just raceswap a couple of folks, when they could have done so much more.

What I find off-putting is that even the human actors look cgi (I’m not including Melissa because she’s not supposed to look half-human, like the mermaids have to). For example, in that scene where Ariel lays on the jellyfish, Halle looks computer generated. It’s so weird.

A Danish story, therefore the lead actress should have been at least a European looking character (half black who look mostly European). Blackwashing white characters is racist toward blacks because Black people will get hand me down characters from white stories. Alternatively, they could have race swap Eric as a prince of fictional African empire, then they hit ESG points and racial propaganda that is a little more acceptable!

Question: Is her hair braided into small rows or flowing freely in a way that is only natural for those who are Indian, Chinese, South American, Korean , Inuit, Nordic, British, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Isle of Man, European ,Russian, Arabic , Pakistani, Turkish, Armenian or Afghans ? Is it not Cultural Appropriation for members of one culture to unnaturally emulate the outward appearance of one that is not their own? I would say YES, but I am not allowed to speak scientific truth in this new age of 'Freedom of speech for me but not thee' where if you don't agree I'm free to attack you with actual physical violence and get away with it while those who pray silently or calmly express a differing opinion in writing, text or verbally are arrested for Hate Crimes.
