I remember my mom would read this to me when I was a kid, and she always kissed my forehead afterwards and said "Don't ever let a man become your whole life. Cuz he will fall in love with someone else and leave you heartbroken for all eternity ". That was her moral. And yes... She's divorced.

I never realized the morals to this story before. Don't give up your voice and identity for someone else. Do not idealize your life with them, as if your life has no meaning and is just "sea foam" without them. It will be a painful journey and ultimately unsatisfying to keep chasing someone who doesn't love you. She didn't kill the prince because she recognised that it had been her choice/fault the entire time- he was innocent and she still cared for him. In the end, it sounds like she still has a chance for meaning in her life, though she is still doing good deeds for others, still unrecognised for who she really is.

This story is so poetically tragic and sad that I find it very beautiful in a strange way. Disney cut out so much of what made it that way. Dumbed it down for the kids. To quote Don Bluth, “Kids can handle anything just give them a happy ending.” This story may not have a traditional good ending, but I’d call it hopeful and optimistic if nothing else.
@ratboy24 жыл бұрын
Maybe children would be able to appreciate an ending that isn't ideal if they were actually exposed to media that had "bad" endings. I remember thinking about how silly it was that movie endings were all "perfect." Unrealistic. I don't think younger children need to know everything about the world, but they can handle a little sadness in a movie. The first time I saw a movie that didn't manage to keep all the protagonists happy and alive, it was a foreign movie and very eye-opening. Sad that I had to watch a film made for audiences in a completely different part of the world just to see a realistic negative end.
@unknownstranger68753 жыл бұрын
It's beautiful because it's about unconditional love and has a bittersweet ending. She does not get her prince and she cannot bring herself to kill him, so she sacrifices herself instead. That leads her to transcend what she is and become a daughter of the air, earning her soul. It's a beautiful message and no it does not mean that you should sacrifice yourself over a man (you really shouldn't though). It means love without expecting anything in return and wishing that person happiness. You will get something better if you do this.

Disney changed aspects of the story that didn't need to change ... The statue of the human littlest is obsessed with IS the reason for her to gravitate towards the prince because he looked identical to the object of her infatuation ... The relationship between the characters is better written, their motivations are way better defined,the world as well as the characters are waaay more fantastical ... The complaint that Ariel likes Eric because he's hot HAS merit ... The connection between her and Erin doesn't exist ... She's not obsessed with the statue like in the book,so her attraction towards Eric becomes much more shallow ... The book has much better narrative and characters ... Walt Disney changed the stories he adapted yes, but he also elevated them ,added new stuff ... Snow White's personality as well as her relationship with the dwarfs was a Disney addition ... Cinderella being an optimistic dreamer was also a Disney addition ... I could go on a rant about the topic, but I won't ... There are other adaptations both live action and animated that do a much better job at adapting HCA's story without f*cking it up ... The story at its core IS A TRAGEDY , turning it into happy ever after ruins the entire point of the story ... Walt Disney wanted to turn it into a feature, but never did because the story is so meticulously written that every aspect of the story LEADS DIRECTLY TO THE CLIMAX , and changing aspects of the story will greatly impact the entire thing ... My favourite version is a 1968 Russian animated version ( it's available on KZbin with subtitles ) ... The 1989 film is good , but not as good as the story Andersen wrote ... From a writing perspective they heavily downgraded the original tale ...

This was the version I first heard as a child, and the first time I heard it, I found it so creepy I didn't even want to hear the end. Which made the Disney movie scarier for me too, because I thought Ariel would die. A lot of HC Andersen's stories are pretty creepy. The Story of a Mother comes to mind. BTW, PL Travers (who wrote Mary Poppins) took issue with that ending: "'But a year taken off when a child behaves and a tear shed and a day added whenever a child is naughty? Andersen, this is blackmail. And the children know it and say nothing. There's magnanimity for you."
@ratboy24 жыл бұрын
Some fiction writers love putting threats towards children in their stories. That's why scary myths exist. If you do bad things, you're bad and will hurt someone. If you do bad things, you're a naughty child and won't get nice things for Christmas. Etc. Some myths exist for ok reasons (like keeping kids inside and away from rivers when they're young), but it's sad that parents have always felt the need to scare their children into being good, instead of just raising them well. Be good or you'll suffer.

Emma Broegger, it is widely accepted that he was bisexual, and although I don’t know if he actually wrote the little mermaid for a man, it’s simply not true that his affections were at all limited to one sex. His own journal suggests many habits that contribute to him being bi, and along with the people who knew him agreeing, I think it’s safe to say that he probably attracted to both genders.

I remember when I watched the Disney version, I got confuse to why they didn't include the knife, bald sisters, or her turning to a wind spirit. Nonetheless I still loved both versions. My favourite part has to be the ending where littlest gently kisses the forehead of the princess and smile at her Prince. She didn't show anger, nor did she show jealousy. Only sadness and a smile to greet the couples a final goodbye. That is what I love about the little mermaid, she loves him with all her heart and wants him to be happy. Even if it means she has to watch from a far.

I knew this since my late childhood years, that's exactly how it was in Andersen's book. It might be more bloody, more miserable and more unfortunate, but a lot of times that's how reality is. Andersen isn't a bad scary tough-face storyteller, he just doesn't wanna lie to kids and sugarcoats things when so often life doesn't. The Cinderella and a few other tales also have the original, more realistic and "brutal" versions.
