You know the Dutch are famous for their directness. Here is an example. / You have lived in the Netherlands for four years now. Why are you still not able to say “dankuwel” if a waiter brings you a cup of coffee? And why are you not able to pronounce something simple as “Bierlokaal De luifel” in this video? After four years you don’t speak a word of Dutch! You will always be a visitor and never be one of “us” if you don’t speak our language. Don’t say that Dutch is too difficult, because language experts say that from all languages Dutch is the closest to English. You just have to put effort into learning Dutch, like I had to put effort into learning English. /

The old canal in Utrecht is a monument, trees included. So they are registered and maintained. It is true! The socalled “werfkelders” or basements below the street are at waterlevel and are old storagespaces. Goods from the boats were easily brought inside. The doors have to be closed. You are not allowed to open them and put glass in it. The heavy trucks are banned there to preserve the basements. The cars and bikes drive on top of the basements. You were even walking on top of them. That is kind of unique in Utrecht. Amsterdam is different. The goods were lifted high in buildings.

It is indeed true that every tree in public spaces (i.e. not on private property) has its own 'passport' with information about age, species, health, etc. Inspectors also visit trees to update this data and if a tree is sick, for example, it is removed for safety reasons!

@itsz sky. In regard to the shop with housing on top: It used to be the same in the US. But the urbanisation after WW2 changed the city design and layout of cities in the US forever. Where the Americans decided to build their cities to make it convenient for car drivers the Europeans decided that it was better to be accessable for everyone, regardless of the vehicle that you are using or going on foot. That is also why you don't see people living above stores anymore in the US. Because those structures were long ago be demolished for their car favored policy.

Nice you were here in Utrecht :-D, Utrecht is much older than Amsterdam and used to be the most important city .... I see you were just seeing like a small part of the city center... next time try to see a bit more... go into the direction of the Ledig Erf and Twijnstraat area.... and to the Oosterkade and Westerkade, and underneath the Vaartsche Rijn Station to the nice places to sit and have a drink alongside the water on the other side of the Jutfaseweg (I won't be mentioning names of establishments or KZbin will think I am trying to do some advertising for certain cafe's etc.)..... but also the Voorstraat is nice. and a walk around the historic city center along side the Single Canal.... you can go all the way around.... But also the Nachtegaalstraat and the Burgemeester Reigerstraat and the area around the Wilhelminpark. And in the direction of the Weerdsluis where you can sit on the many steps next to the city locks, and get an ice cream from that place nearby the mill. And close to Utrecht is also Amelisweerd: nice for walking, eat pancakes and you can even go there by boat.... ah and yes the green trees in NL.... I always notice it when I am abroad and it is all concrete and bricks, I do really miss the green streets then..... All the trees are indeed accounted for by the municipality, they are also being taken care of by the municipality of Utrecht: that's where your tax money is going to, to give society nice livable and green neighbourhoods..... trees are so important for people's wellbeing ...

The market in the beginning of the video is only on wensday and saturday. Also its verry american to say you walk a lot and only walk 4 or 5 kilometers a Day. Here in the netherlands that's the small Child distance at de vierdaagse ( the four days, wich is a tradition in multiple places here in the netherlands as kid you start with walking 5 kilometer 4 nights in a row. With about a 100 to a 1000 or more participatiant depending on where you live. If you get a little older about 10 or 11 you joint the 10 kilometer walk. And when your a adult you can joint the national vierdaagse and the dutch army Who do the 40 kilometer walk. Oh and its always 4 nights in a row and once a year. The people Who joint the 40 kilometer walk always train all year around tho or are from the militairy.) And ciclying is Just a normal thing for us 20 kilometers of cycling a Day is not that strange i live in utrecht and their is only one creative highschool here in the area. So people from Ijsselstein, Nieuwegein, Maarssen, bilthoven and villages al around the city cicled to our school daily. For example i had had friend from Ijsselstein who often went on his bicycle, he casually cycled 38 a Day if he directly went home after school. If he hang out with us after school it was probably 40 or 45km a Day. And its annoying aspeccially in winter when its 2 degree celcius outside and storming. But hey it makes you strong. Dont be weak, our distant ancetors walked from norway to england in a few days during the ice age. I truly belive our health problems and overweight numbers are less cause we cycle true cold winter nights causally.

That water is probably the old Rhine, as you can see Utrecht is on high ground a glacial end moraine , sand and gravel. So it would not flood in winter, hence the Romans picked the spot, at the ford through the river, since than that branch of the Rhine that ran to Leiden, and to the sea, died.

Hey Sky, just wanted to leave a little comment about the tree registration. Every municipality has its own rules, policies and workflows, so this will be different in every municipality in the Netherlands. From experience I can say most municipalities have a tree registration with some basic information (like the year in which it was planted). Every municipality has a policy for the felling of trees (almost always formulated in a way that it is prohibited, unless.....), and some of the municipalities also have a policy to protect (certain) trees from any harm or work done around them.

Utrecht always was a port along the river, so the old city center is full of old buildings, shops and restaurants. Cars have very limited access, and sinces its right next to a modern mall and the central station, its easy to visit by public transport. As a result, its very lively. Utrecht also has a university, as well as a Science Park (academic hospital, university, college, research conpanies). The city attracts a lot of students. And we, the Netherlands, profit and have A LOT in the past from the rest of the world too, even places that dont want us and never wanted us in their countries. Its very hypocritical attiude to have. We've literally haven stolen billions in resources and labor to enrich ourselves and build our beautiful country . You are being very narrow minded and wrong. There are so many immigrants that contribute. The people who profit the most are the richest among us, who make money off US ALL but you're lowkey just xenofobic so that's a conversation you're not interested in ( you feeling you even get to make an exception for this man you don't even know is you playing into the " model minority" idea. Using him to discrimate and justify your own xenofobic and racist ideas about other people.) You probably dont even actually have the facts. You feel things and heard some people say some stuff. Do you know about how underpaid a lot of immigrants are, how much business is done by them and how they've helped this country become what it is today . Shame!

On some places the houses above stores are not actually houses, but were for storage (as in Eindhoven). But with modern logistics they are empty, but they try to convert it to houses, but that is not always easy, because you need an entrance. Also, in the past the owner of the store lived above it. My uncle had a store in the Zadelstraat in Utrecht and lived above it. But that is 70 years ago.

As I understand it, building shops with living space above is illegal in America. All the focus on cars make city centres impossible to be compact like in almost all over the world. But remember, a lot of cities were torn down to make room for cars. We have see the error in this and came back from that. Now it is up to the stubborn people in the US and Canada to do the same. Not just bikes or strong towns have some good vidoes about this.

I though to visit down town Oakland, there's nothing there, few people, some with mental issues, rare shops, offices and empty streets, except for cars. No wonder no one feels safe, like when many other people relax on the street, so can you. When everyone looks afraid at others, everyone gets jumpy. I'll stay and enjoy my city life here, thank you very much.

Congrats, awesome job. I still think the ApParaTus squat is silly. Making a big deal of 'measuring' the athletes to imply level playing field, only to have the winner quarter 'squatting' 9 or 10 reps while most athletes get stapled under that thing. Mitch just Joel Seedman'ed that shit. Even if next year everyone is a bit wiser it will still be too disjointed from real squat imo.

Dunno really being each tree being actually registered. But you cant just chop down a tree wich is about a certain hight. Even when its on your own property. You will need to ask the council to get a permit to chop down the tree. You can get fined when u have an anoying neighbour who complained to the council you chopped down a tree 😅
