The new school way is great but as a seminarian I will say there’s something really beautiful about praying from the book. It really affects you deeply.

Amazing! Here is the quote you cited: “From this it follows that every liturgical celebration, because it is an action of Christ the priest and of His Body which is the Church, is a sacred action surpassing all others; no other action of the Church can equal its efficacy by the same title and to the same degree.”

I am a consecrated woman in a secular institute. I pray 5 hours of office. I decided to pick up my four volume again after using my phone for years because it’s easier for traveling etc. but I miss my books. It made me feel better that you mentioned it took you a couple years to master it because it can get quite complicated and the set up of each books can be slightly different, I would say lent/Easter is the more complicated volume. But I’m getting the hang of it again.

Thank you, Fr. Columba, that was so helpful. I was opting for saying as many rosaries as I could throughout the day rather than say the Divine Office. When you emphasized word "Liturgy" in the Office it made clear how important it is. Now I will go back to saying the Office as well as keeping my promise to Our Lady to say the complete rosary.

Hi Fr. Columba, thank you for posting your video. I’ve been praying the Office of readings as part of my daily prayer hour, for the past few months. I’m overwhelmed at how The Lord is using it in my life. When I was discerning the priesthood (in the seminary) we would pray Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer daily as a school community. I felt then a type of connection to the whole Church, particularly while praying psalms that didn’t “match” my own emotions (I knew they connected to others somewhere, so I prayed along with them). But now (MANY years later), I feel much more connected to The Lord and to His untiring and ingenious pursuit to offer and to fulfill His covenant with his Children. As I pray I feel at once like a bystander and also as a participant in His action (since I am praying in the Holy Spirit). I am always left with a sense of some type of duty/response after prayer. Sometimes my response is simply to join in prayer again, or to intercede for the troubles of the world or for my friends or family. Other times I am led to be proactive in bringing about change in the world around me. I guess I’m left with the conclusion, It seems that God initiates the prayer by calling me to prayer. I then begin the prayer with the invitatory. At some point after that I feel like Dorothy in the whirlwind, I’m no longer in Kansas but I’m wherever The Lord wants me to be - seeing and hearing what He wants me to hear. As for my “text of choice”, I used to use the one volume text. Then I used the four volume text. Now I’m using the IBreviary app by Paolo Padrini. It’s free and I’m delighted with it. apps.apple.com/us/app/ibreviary-ts-plus/id422601705

I’ve been using Universalis for about 3 years after a small one off payment. Lauds and Compline are the anchors of my day and night. Now that our church is open again before evening 6.00 Mass Vespers is now also part of the daily Office. Father, I loved your reminder that praying the Office even while alone is still in union with all those doing the same.

Thank you for this talk. You can use the Liturgy of the hours as a base for prayer and can spend an hour meditating each Psalm or reading as a bishop told me. You can speed through them.but not really prayer then. The whole Church is praying the same thing which is a wonderful thing.

HI Fr. Columba. I don't know if you remember me but I was a NET Ireland missionary during 2019-2020. I went to confession to you and you told me about how the songs of songs relates to our spiritual moments of consolation and desolation. I thought it was amazing but have forgotten all the details about it. COuld you do a video on that maybe? '

Hey there, thank you so much for your comment, and for your mission with NET! Father doesn't manage this page but it's amazing that you mentioned that - we have two videos coming up on discernment of spirits and Father goes into lots of depth on consolation and desolation. Fr Columba has a new video every Thursday at 7pm GMT!

Dear Fr. Columba, I am not one to declare my faith openly. I was raised going to catholic school. But married into the Episcopal Church. I really want to have Jesus more involved in my life. I am trying to learn the liturgy of the hours in my life. My main conflict is the guidance from the Catholic community and the guidance from the Episcopal community. Though I attend church each week at the episcopal church with my wife, I feel I am missing something when it comes to the teachings of the liturgy of the hours there vs from the church I grew up in. Any advice. I know this is from an old video and you may not see this. Just hoping for some guidance.

It may answer some questions for you, if you are seeking in this area. Please feel free to watch that and comment again, we would love to answer any questions you have.
