One hugely important part of HTTYD was how Toothless' facial expresssions and body language hughlighted the intimacy of his scenes. Toothless has to be one of, if not _the_ most expressive non-speaking animal characters in mainstream media. He doesn't speak a word, yet viewers can read his emotions and thoughts like an open book. Those big, soulful eyes convey so much more than a regular animal, which may struggle in a live action medium alone, let alone without a key director.

There are three movies that maintained highly realistic details and human-like expressions in animals: Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole and the Happy Feet movies. I’m not saying that the remake of How To Train Your Dragon will be good (IT DOES NOT NEED A FREAKING REMAKE), but if there’s a remake of a movie with animals as the stars (like Brother Bear, Spirit, or The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride), the technology utilized in Owls of Ga’hoole and both Happy Feet movies would probably make them worth watching (if the directing is done right). However, I doubt any movies that’ll be made in the future will be any good because of the recent strike and filmmakers using AI.

Part of what helps the dragon’s expressiveness and familiarity is that their movements and behaviours are modeled after cats and dogs.

My biggest concerns are Dean being the soul director, and how casting seems to be going. People always seem to forget how HTTYD (the original film) was mostly Chris's movie, Dean being restricted to an extent as co-director. Then as the sequels came out and Chris leaving an unrestricted, unsupervised Dean to make the final film (arguably the weakest and worse film with more plotholes than one can imagine), makes me extremely worried that he will alter the beloved first film in such a way to make it aline to "his" design. Casting is also a concern, as we've seen with remakes. Representation is good don't get me wrong, but when you have already established and beloved characters, you shouldn't just "race-swap" them and call it a day. Especially in HTTYD's sake where everyone is a viking. It'd make no sense to have a viking story with vikings, but then have most of the cast not be vikings...y'know? So those two things are my biggest concerns. A live action httyd could maybe work beautifully but it needs to be done RIGHT, something I don't think will happen with this remake.

As someone who’s half black, I agree. I never looked at Astrid and thought that I didn’t feel represented because she didn’t look like me. I thought of her as just a human, same with Hiccup. They’re both people with their own stories, race shouldn’t matter. In this case however, race does sort of matter. They’re Vikings from Norway, Vikings were white, especially in Norway. People make it their job to make sure that other races are historically correct except when it comes to white people. You’d never see a movie where there was a white tribe member in Africa nowadays because it’s ‘controversial’. So why change it now?

As a kid I never saw the quality shifts of the movies but now I do and I imagine if I hadn't seen the shows as a kid I would have realized sooner how much intimacy the second film lacks. 3:45 The first movie was more about friendship and a lesson. The second movie was a lot more action packed and mystery involved in the aspect of who Drago was and how they will get rid of him. The third movie was totally weird. The whole relationship Hiccup and Toothless had was thrown to the wind when the light fury arrived.
@keyboardsmash1231
@keyboardsmash1231 Жыл бұрын
The second movie was more about hiccups life story. The 3rd was emphasised the relationship between hiccup and toothless, as hiccup released toothless and the other dragons so they can be free further cementing how they both want the best for each other and aren't selfish
@kittyqveen3249
@kittyqveen3249 Жыл бұрын
I can fully understand why the third movie was like that though. The movie is about growing up and experiencing new things. As you grow up, things in life change, and people (or, I guess if we are talking about HTTYD,) dragons change. Toothless grew up and followed his natural animal instincts to find a mate. He loved Hiccup, he loved Berk, but he needed to finally learn how to survive on his own. Each movie has a lesson, and the third one definitely showed of how growing up can be. It’s sometimes sad, but sometimes it’s certain things we need to accept. Toothless is happy, and that’s all that matters to me. It also shows to me that friendship can’t always last forever. Though, you can always be friends from afar. But this is just my opinion.

Can we agree that Toothless's skin for the live action movie could be like that of a snail? I hope this idea gets implemented because I am not sure how to feel about just his skin being like any other live action dragon out on the market in movies currently. Httyd's art style suggests these dragons are super goofy and fantastical so how will these dragons skins be shown off in a live actions version? I am thinking about this alot.

Exactly. Not all movies are made to be real, and not all movies are made to be animated. Look at Spider-verse for example: imagine how DULL and BORING it would look as a live action remake. It looks so much better in the comic-book and sketchy 2-D style.

I always thought that the tone shifted was because the characters grew up between the movies, and so did we, a lot of us where 10 or younger when the first movie came out then nearly five years later we see the second movie and we get so see the characters grow and have to deal with more serious topics like love,death and war. Then the third movie the characters come full circle and complete their growth, having learned to trust in themselves after 6 years of relying on their dragons. We even see them with children of their own. I love that part because it reminds me of a parent showing their kids what they loved doing as a child.

The only two things I’m worried about is how the dragons and characters will look. I’m sure the dragons won’t be iconic as their animated look, but I’m still excited. I’m about to say something next that I’ll probably get attacked for, but it’s still my opinion. I heard Astrid is being played by the black actress, Nico Parker (I believe that’s her name?). Don’t get me wrong, she’s a good actress. But not a good fit for Astrid. I wasn’t one of those people who got mad over Ariel and Tinkerbell being played by a black actress, because those were purely fairytales. HTTYD, however, has a small amount of history behind it. Vikings back then were not black. They were the whitest of all the whites. She’s simply not a good fit for Astrid. Why make a live action if you’re not going to be accurate to the original? The whole point of a live action, in my opinion, is to give the original new perspective and new life, but also be accurate with the characters. Obviously I don’t know the case of the actors and how they were chosen, but you have to choose people that look the part when it comes to history. Maybe you find someone who looks the part, but they’re a horrible actor. That’s fine. Maybe they’ll have to deviate a little bit. That’s fine, too. But it’s lazy just to find someone who’s a good actor and slap them into a roll that they don’t fit into. Ok that’s the end of my whole rant, please don’t attack me.-

I completely agree with you regarding the second and third movie being a bit "messy". Like theres been 3 series, and Grimmel is old. Plus 4 shorts, but nobody has EVER heard of the GREAT night fury killer? Itd be known worldwide if it was realistic imo. Sure they didnt have internet, but people traveled too and rumors mustve spread, especially between other hunters. Him popping out from the dark was just an excuse to not give us a female night fury 😭😭 Anyways, first movie is my favorite and will always be! I feel bad for Chris tho, he did NOT get all the credit he deserved

I agree with you on alot of these points. The tonal shift from the first how to train your dragon to the second one feels drastic yet new so, i forgive it from the tonal shift from the first. The third movie came, and it felt way too monetized. The giant dragons, the possible "playsets" to show off in the movie, along with the light fury being so....not what I wanted personally for a love interest, but feminized dragon for Toothless....yeah. It's okay. The third movie keeps Toothless and Hiccups attitudes intact but feels rushed and uninvolved feeling more so to show off toys.

Dreamworks has an opportunity to learn from Disney's mistakes with live-action and avoid them in this remake, keeping in mind that the studio was founded essentially to flip Disney on its head. At least this director was involved in directing the original and likely knows the intent put into each scene, unlike M. Night Shyamalan and that live-action that should never have been. I certainly hope they get the dragons right. It'll be awesome to see them in a more realistic light while remaining true to the original designs, but it's crucial that they not go down the path of The Lion King and actually make these animal _characters_ expressive; they are _not_ simple creatures operating solely on instinct, they _actually_ have individual personalities. And they all better retain their unique fire-breaths. I got annoyed at the end of the second movie when it seemed to forget that fact and they all simply used a barrage of fireballs, when the first movie showcased clearly that each species has their own variation of breathing fire; balls of molten rock, a white-hot fire beam, one head breathing flammable gas and another sparking it, viscous liquid fire, plasma blasts, etc., and that's not even getting into the dragons that breathe other elements.

The real problem is the insane amount of 3D, special effects and CGI that this film will need, and keeping the cool aspect of the dragons and the world will be difficult. I really hope they don't rush the special effect like in a lot of movies that came out since the last year. It can be cool but at the same time it's possible that I prefered a different story in the same world, I don't in which part of the world or when, but I think there is something to explore in the expansion of the universe than in remakes.

The only thing that makes me think the movie won't be a total dumpsterfire is that, since he worked on the 1st movie, Dean knows ALL behind the scenes, all the ideas they had for the movie which were scrapped, ALL cut scenes, he knows the meaning of every scene, he knows what could be perfected (ik HTTYD 1 is already perfect lol) or explored a bit more than they could do in the little time they had to make the 1st movie... (they did it all in 14 months, thay's CRAZY for a movie of such quality!) Yeah, that's my only hope the movie will be decent... I wish they had made a different movie, maybe Book Accurate HTTYD? The OG animated project failed because it would have been too childish, but since it's live action, adults could want to give it a try? If they really wanted to make a remake of HTTYD, they could've based it more on the books. I'm sure it's obvious but the original books the movies and shows were based on are wildly different, possessing similarities only by name and vague plot points. I'm a huge fan of HTTYD 1 & absolutely love every bit of it. The story, plot, characters, animation, MUSIC, my goodness, still blows it out of the water!! For being over a decade old, this movie is still a masterclass in what movies today should aspire to. One of the things that made the movie be able to tell this story at all, was the medium in which it was written. This story works really well in the animation medium, and I would dare say it would not be the same story in any other medium should they be tried. In all honesty, I have almost no hope for the live action because they will be stripping the story of the necessary tools to tell it. If you need an example, just focus on the dragons and their expressions, design, and movements throughout the movie, something that would be unmatched in any other medium. If I tried to do Marvel in the animation medium, how do you think the story would change? What would be lost? At what cost would the new story medium come? I'm not criticizing the story in the least, but it is rather the way the story is told that I'm criticizing. Some things should remain in the mediums they were born in. It depends on what kind of story is being told. What medium best fits the story I'm trying to tell? This question is something movie companies have completely forgotten to ask in their pursuit of the big bucks they desire. They forget, however, that no one likes mediocrity, and the time to carefully craft a story in the way it is supposed to be told, matters. Some fine examples of allowing the story to take shape through careful attention to interconnecting parts as of recent are Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and Spiderman (Into and across the Spider verse). I think these kinds of movies that stretch the bounds of imagination and storytelling will pave the way for all different kinds of new stories. What we have been at a loss for is the love and time needed to tell a well-written story. Movies are a form of storytelling, same with theater, books, art, and more. What I would advise all authors and workmen of their craft: take the time and space you need in order to make your craft the most spectacular it can be. Your audience will forgive the wait as it will be worth it. I hope that in time, with audience support, we will change how well-crafted each story is and once more enjoy the process of creativity. For now, though, may HTTYD remain the legend it is, inspiring others to pour in as much love, time, and effort as was put into it. "It's not so much what you look like, its what's inside that he can't stand... stop trying so hard to be something you're not." -Gobber

It basically explains how the main cast's friendship developed and how Dagur came into play. It isn't crucial to watch this smaller series but I feel like you should if you really want to understand more about series. I feel like instead of making a live action they could make another animated HTTYD Film aka 4 with better animation models and better storyline, that follows of with hiccups and toothless Kids as adults and finally stopping Dragon Hunters as a whole and having a much bigger more epic battle if all of Hiccups/Toothless enemies coming together as a whole army with a coming of a new Titan-Wing like Dragos Bewilder Beast but much larger and more dangerous as a Finale.

This! I been saying this for so long! I believe Chris was a huge part of what made the 1st movie so different. It was also not your typical good guys vs bad guys, it was one way of thinking vs another between father and son, man, their relationship through the movie is pretty amazing, you could say it's a movie about relationships and being human. Then on the second all that is gone, it's good guys vs bad guys, and character relationships are thin and it's all about the fights and stuff. And the whole "mind control" always felt lazy to me (and was used again in the next movie) and trying to turn everything into world changing stakes and everything going over the top "the last super special dragon of its kind" "the ruler of absolutely every single dragon on the world" "the smartest, handsomest, most skilled, everyone loves him protagonist" the "and tragedy struck with someone getting killed and that made the protagonist grow" Ughhh I'm tired of all that Hollywood stuff, and it was Dan idea! And the 3rd is said he waited the whole thing after isolating himself and it has so many bad wrotten moments. 😢 And just the fact that that Chris contributed a ton with toothless unique anfibian dragon look! Sience then toothless has been altered to have a more mamalian/lion anatomy. It keeps looking less and less like an axolotl and more like a horse or the usual 4 legged dragon. I'm sure he'll be different in the new movie. And what kind of director spoils the whole movie on a casual interview weeks before it's release Ughhh I don't like how Dan works xp I fact the whole team making a movie can make a huge difference, the fact that toothless official look was inspired by someones pc wallpaper, or that someone put tape on its cat tail to have a reference for animation... Not everyone has that creativity. Dan and the new teams don't seem to understand what actually made the first movie so special, they think it's all about "big dragon fights and world sized stakes" when you know how to write and direct you can make a story of going to the market to get pudding a big story

I’m hoping that the films dose play out how it normally would in the first film but we see more about toothless we have learned hiccups story but if we got to see more of where toothless lived before and such that would be a cool angle to explore, as well as showing how terrifying he can be I don’t want toothless to look super cute and soft right away. Night fury’s are described as “ the unholy offspring of lightning and death “ and there is a warning to never approach them! I wnat to see toothless be terrifying and then slowly become more domesticated as the film carry’s on as it would normally. It would be an introduction angle to follow I think.

And I have a good idea for another animated movie. For one I think it would be cool to have a plot twist at the end where there is a part 2 of it. An army from a far land that attacks the home of dragons. And the dragons need to leave the hidden world. And hiccup and toothless should stay together and Astrid should get the light fury. The army from a far land should be huge bigger than draggo and viggo’s army together if u saw race to the edge. They should have stronger ships new weapons and a multi part movie. I want universal to see this and take my idea in consideration, If u want the movies to stay good it needs to use the same animation, NO LIVE ACTION Thank you if you read this and please reply your opinions on this comment.!

As a HUGE fan of httyd movies, I'm concerned about the realistic look of the dragons. Toothless is actually cute and amazing. But, as we can see in the theater piece, he's... scary, has no facial expression and looks more like a monster than an actual cute cat-based dragon... I love toothless as the way he is, and, I'll be really concerned if they just change him as a monster-thing with pink lips.

I'm fine with a live-action remake but it doesn't have to be a remake either, it could just be a faithful adaptation of the story from the book or they could make a new story using ideas from the book like the first movie did.

As a major fan of HTTYD, since 2012, i am absolutely disappointed in this. I do not want a live action movie. And i disagree with the revival of the franchise. We need to stop reviving old franchises and start making some new, refreshing stuff. This is like exhumating the skeleton of a dead pet, slapping a skin costume, some paint and a pair of googly eyes and calling it a it a "new pet". It's not. HTTYD should've ended in 2019 with HTTYD 3, and should've stayed dead. This clearly just yet another way to ruin and milk this franchise further, as if it wasn't already in shambles. Live action remakes are soulless cashgrabs that do nothing but ruin and milk already existing, beautiful, heartfelt franchises/shows/movies, like HTTYD. EDIT: And one more thing. I disagree with your take on HTTYD 2. While it had a diffrent tone and feel from the 1st movie, it's still amazing and has a lot of heart and passion to it. Simply, HTTYD 1 is slice-of-life, and HTTYD 2 is action-adventure, which to me it works because the franchise is expaning its already existing lore. HTTYD 1 is the introduction to the lore, and HTTYD 2 is the expansion. Calling it a "hollow hollywood prodution" is a bit of an exaggerated take, as if HTTYD 2 was that bad. If anything, this take fits better with HTTYD 3.

I know most people are against live actions, but honestly every movie have a chance to be a good one, so even if turns out to be bad you can stop watching it in the middle and quit the cinema like nothing happened, AND maybe the live action will be good and you will actually enjoy a 2 hours movie :) And another thing I have to mention, it's seems like in past few years dream works have been doing a really good job with there movies unlike disney, so I actually have a bit of hope in this movie.

I honestly think this movie might be trash, but I won't say anything too big until I see a trailer. Reason why I might hate it is because they made Nine realms. They said it'll have some same things as RTTE but that was a complete lie, their nothing alike! Nine realms is the thing I hate most in all of HTTYD, wait no, Nine realms is something I don't even consider as HTTYD. My final judgement will only be said when the trailer comes out.
