The name is literally because he is a link between the player and the game. From the very first game. Up until botw you could change the name of course, because there was no voice acting that would need to deal with custom names, but canonically he is Link because he is a link connecting the player to the game.

@@ZER0O9Same here. For example just look at something like Linked Universe. They each feel unique even though they're all Links. Their background, and their relationships play a part in their characterization. Even outside of fan characterizations from fan works I still think of them as their own person based on what we know of them from the games. The Hero of Time starts out as an outcast among the Kokiri, being the only one without a fairy, and gets sent out on a difficult and even harrowing journey as a child in way over his head. After one difficult journey he loses his friend and while looking for her he gets caught up in a whole other adventure where he progresses by getting to know the people and helping them with their own personal problems. Off the bat this Link feels more lonely to me. There is something deeply tragic about the Hero of Time even if you only count what he goes through in OOT. At the end he is returned to the past as a child, but he can't go back to how he was before because he's not a Kokiri; unlike the eternal children he will age because he's not one of them. Twilight Link is a young man with a place in Ordon Village as a ranch hand. His catelyst for setting out was to save the people he cares about. Outside of the main Zelda conflict with Ganon, or the unique friendship that blooms with Midna; TP Link has emotional story beats revolving around the Ordon villagers; from Illya's memory loss, to Colin learning to be courageous. TP Link has a place where he belongs outside of the epic adventure. He has a home in Ordon Village. WW Link has lots of personality. He shows reluctance to don the green garments, and seems to have a bit more of an attitude. He sets off of Outset Island to rescue his sister. He seems to have some bonds with the villagers, but mostly it's with his family; his sister, and his grandmother. He has emotional moments in reuniting with them, but he's awoken a thirst for the sea life; hence why he continues traveling with Petra and her crew at the beginning of Phantom Hourglass. You could say that I'm reading too much into it, but even though the Links are meant to be Links between game and players; there is still more to them than that. Their bonds help to ground them into the world of Hyrule.

Although I understand (and somewhat agree) with your point about Link talking, I am still very conflicted on the idea. I just think they will have to come up with a very unique and clever way to express his thoughts through dialogue. How does that look like? I have no clue... This is a small ramble, but the reason why I enjoy Link as a character, is the fact that he expresses himself so much WHILE say very few words at the same time. He is so unique from any other main video game character because of that fact by itself. Link listens to the people around him. He is silent, gentle, but expresses his strength in his actions. And that is why the people around him trust him so much. Because Link shows his intentions through his actions, not his words. The only time where he "talks" in video games, is when a character asks him a very straightforward question that requires an answer. Link speaks when he NEEDS to. Not because he simply feels like speaking. So I hope the writers can convey that appropriately, and give him INTENTIONAL dialogue.

I agree with you but I don't have faith that Nintendo will succeed with this. BotW Link was horribly rigid compared to his past incarnations. He has personality in some parts like when he cooks but he's a cardboard cutout in cutscenes. Characters just monologue at him and it brings them down as well. I'm not saying he should speak much at all, but he needs to emote. Wind Waker did a great job giving Link personality.
@watchinglearner7 ай бұрын
That’s the thing with Link. Strong, silent, but not mute. Mostly limits his speech to one-word answers like Big Mac, but has plenty of implied and off-screen dialogue, which would be good to see for once.

Yeah, this is where animation would have fit so much more. Take a look at some of Major Link's fan animations specifically on OOT. Conveying things through his exagerrated facial expressions, body language, and little noises he makes. Animation allows you to make well... Animated characters, but with Live action you have to find someone more expressive and there's more room for error.

Gorons and Zoras would be CGI of course. I still suspect it'll be something like an Ocarina of Time themed film. I don't see how they can just make a generic "its a Zelda film but has no connection to any existing games." IMO it would be inspired by an existing Zelda story, with OOT probably being the best pick. But obviously that's "inspired", not a full adaptation or anything.

I think if this announcement had happened 5 or 6 years ago, the fact that it will be live-action wouldn't have been seen as a potential red flag for people. But the movie industry these past few years has been absolutely *bloated* with dimly-lit, washed out, literally-everything-except-for-the-actors-is-CGI kinds of films (the most notorious offenders being the awful Disney live-action remakes of animated classics). I adore the medium of animation, so while I am a little disappointed with the news, I don't think it's impossible to recreate the beautiful world of Hyrule in live-action. The problem is getting the studios to put in the necessary effort. But if Nintendo is putting the pressure on studio execs, they might be able to pull it off.

My main gripe with Live Action is all the cramp cgi they'll have to work with. Like adding the Gorons, Zora, Rito (if they ever appear), Ganon beast form, plant monsters, Deku scrubs, the octopus enemies, and selected dungeon bosses like Gohma or Gleeok. I can't even imagine what the heck the set piece will like aside from hyrule Castle. Cause in every iteration in the games, the whole landscape of Hyrule changes, not looking anything like the previous ones before it. Like what's Zora Domain, the lost woods, Goron city, and Guredo desert gonna even look like.

My opinion is they'll take a pre-existing setting and focus primarily on that, while drawing elements from other games, too. IMO OOT is probably the most likely scenario. My concern here is the one I had when the Mario movie came out. Where can they go with Zelda's character? They took so much of Zelda's characterization and stuck it in Peach, I don't know how they can stay true to Zelda without making her feel derivative now. Zelda is a true ruler, competent and versed in the workings of the world she inhabits, and she has to bring Link up to speed and help prepare him for his role in the coming struggle. Sound familiar?
@JaidynReiman3 ай бұрын
That depends on the setting they do. Many Zelda settings don't have Zelda as the de facto ruler, her father is present in many games. For example, in Ocarina of Time Zelda's father is still alive at the start. Zelda is only the de facto ruler in a few settings, whereas in the Mario series, there is no known "de facto" ruler except Princess Peach herself. In Zelda games we have: Twilight Princess (Zelda is the de facto ruler) Spirit Tracks (I'm not aware of any other ruler than Zelda) Link Between Worlds (Zelda is again the ruler) Tears of the Kingdom (very arguable, as although Zelda is back in the present day post-BOTW and before being sent back to the past, she is basically acting as the ruler, but there really isn't a Kingdom yet at this point) ...is there anything else beyond that? The Kingdom is basically fallen in LoZ. OOT has the King being present (but unseen) as a child, by the time you're an adult he's dead. The King is killed just before the start of LTTP. The King exists in WW but Hyrule is no more. Tetra goes on to found New Hyrule, so technically she becomes a ruler later, but not right away. Oracle of Ages/Seasons: Zelda is present, but if this is the same time period as LTTP the King is still alive. The King is still alive in Minish Cap. In BOTW he's alive in the past. There's no Kingdom in Skyward Sword, but Gaepora (Zelda's father) is basically the leader of the people of Skyloft. I guess there's no known rulers in Four Swords/FSA, so if we include those, we can argue there's 6 games in total where Zelda is actually the ruler of Hyrule. In most games she's not the ruler, just the heir. She always plays an important role, but that's not the same thing as being the active current ruler of Hyrule.

I don't want to hear about this thing until they actually have something to show. Now it's just speculation based on absolutely zero content. Now this thing has to loom in the background following the history of live action flops. Disney keeps vomiting up live action adaptions in these past years-so I'm sick of live action being treated like a more mature medium compared to animation. It's really not and can look so tacky. (Edit) also no, the Mario movie was not faithful. That movie's "Peach" is literally nothing like Peach. She can fight or have active rolls but why did they scrub her of her personality ?? She sounds nothing like Peach as well.

Honestly, of all the things I worry about now, I think the biggest one is actually Link talking. Not that I want him to stay silent. No. Link in the mangas was done perfectly across all the various games adapted. This idea he doesn't have a character is ludicrous. No, my issue is now with Echoes of Wisdom out, and Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom already being what they are, Nintendo seems to have this idea that Link _shouldn't_ talk. They're finding ways to shoehorn in story reasons why he's silent because they "cant picture him talking" now. He doesn't need to be super chatty, but Link by all means should be capable of speech. It's so strong in their minds they even made Zelda a silent protagonist in her own game. She doesn't need the floating companion, she already is established as a character that speaks. Unless they want to take great inspiration from Samurai Jack, then Link needs to talk.

First off, let me congratulate you on your choice of music for the video. Mikel - hero of my work and study time. About the film being live action - I agree that it's not as big a hurdle as people think. Zelda has been presented in a ton of different art styles over the years that are all equally "Zelda" and this will simple be one more. As long as the film commits to its style and doesn't try to immitate a game, people will get used to it as they did with Wind Waker. I've said before that I believe (and fear) they will use botw/totk Hyrule as base because that is what most of the more recent fanbase knows and the first thing potential new players will get to see. But concerning Link speaking I actually hope they take botw inspiration because that would mean making his (lack of) speech part of his character. I wouldn't want him to be mute but I want him to be a character that speaks mostly only when necessary and doesn't babble or maybe only does with specific characters, that could be cute. I truely hope Nintendo reads the room enough to strike a balance here between expectations from a new audience and the old hands.

I think Nintendo is going to do Ocarina of Time. With that said, the best way to portray Link, is how Goku was written in Dragonball. Goku was a boy that lived in the wild who foraged and lived on the land. Link can do the same. He'll go to town, see his great abilities, and he earns gold. Goku has his power pole, Link can have his magic bag of infinite space. If you think about it, Bulma had those capsules that can fit anything. Towns people would react to Link like the ignorant boy who stinks, but has so much courage and skill to fight against gangs around the castle. He'll have pinpoint accuracy on things like arrows or slashing something to pieces. This movie can be amazing. Please, no big name actors. Do this like they did Star Wars.

The LOTR franchise is having trouble finding someone who can adapt the books properly, Game of Thrones (TV series) tripped at the finish line and The Witcher (Netflix series) just lost its Geralt. There's a massive void forming waiting to be filled by a good fantasy story and the Zelda series is able to set itself apart with a healthy plethora of inspiration. Honestly, what I hope for most is a Zelda movie that blends the various styles of Zelda and then trying to branch out from there. Mostly because I think the Wind Waker trilogy would benefit most from being animated because it avoids trying to work with child actors.

I think hearing it wasn’t going to be animated was just a big shock for most, especially after seeing the Mario movies huge success. In the end this movie is going to come down to casting and special effects. And as long as they don’t cast Tom Holland as link, I’ll try to remain optimistic.

What I want to know is if they will go with the weirder Zelda like botw with the Devine beasts and not the Douggens, or will they go with the more normal one with the doungens. And I never viewed link talking but not like spider man in the MCU, I viewed link in the movie like he WILL talk or he WON’T at all but you made me more happy about thinking that he could talk but not like spider man

Thank you for your comment! I have a hunch it's going to be more classic Zelda. BotW/TotK will be old news by the time the movie comes out, and they're probably doing a generalized approach, similar to the Mario Movie. Also, the princess says you're excused 🤭

I am cautiously optimistic here because yes I do trust Nintendo, the caution still comes from the fact that Hollywood is still involved. I am more hopeful hearing just how long Miyamoto has been working with that one producer though. I know you mentioned a lot of great live action movies with either a fantasy or sci-fi setting, but I want to add more. Let's not forget a bunch of movies in the 80s that used the fantasy setting and still managed feel enchanting (Legend, Willow, Never Ending Story). My only concern with the live-action Zelda movie is it won't look 'real' when it comes to special effects. I want any CGI that's used to enhance the movie so it'll age well. I am hoping that this movie uses more practical effects then CGI, but that's just me. This video was unscripted? Wow, that's impressive. Nicely done. I do think overall the story will be similar to that of the Mario Movie- Original story with elements from the series. What does have me curious, will this movie be canon to the Zelda timeline? Unlike Mario, all of the Zelda games are linked. Then again, Zelda chars have appeared in other games and that's not part of the lore.
@ShinKyuubi Жыл бұрын
When you consider the last major Live Action movie Nintendo had was the original Mario movie back in the day and how they didn't have close control over that one? Yeah....after that it would make sense for any future movies for them be they live action or animated that they hold the reigns of the development tighter. From what I hear about the animated Mario movie they had to reign in the studio a little cause they wanted to really girl boss Peach up like is the current trend in movies made in the west. Also as far as the thing about diary pages about Link and how other people view him and their conversations? Don't forget that the story progress in both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, in Japanese at least, is written in first person perspective as journal entries BY Link himself. For whatever reason when they translated it over here in the west they left that out and made it a more sterile third person perspective. Link has a good bit of character now and even in the past he's shown to be a bit of a sleepy person lol, a good few of his adventures have started with him being told to "Wake Up" in some way not just Breath of the Wild.

I think what worries me is CGI, I think what would be cool if they use both CGI, puppets, Special effects make up and of course special effects, I just don't want it to be heavily CGI-ed, but that's a personal issue for me. However they go with it I can't wait to watch

I wish the movie would be an anime movie or just hand drawn animation. I'm so sick of live action CGI and 3D animation all the time. With how beautiful the would of zelda is it's better suited for animation and art. You can get better fight, scenery and action using anime/traditional animation what a shame. This is just one of those things that should have been made by studio trigger/madhouse/or the team behind the castlevania animation. It needs to be done by someone like makoto shinkai or miyazaki. As an artist myself I can honestly it's a waste for it to be just another live action movie in the sea and as a fan I just can't see it working out.

I think this will age like milk. Live action adaptations have proven time and time and time again that anyone who ever tries will deviate immensely from the source material. Why? Because they want to capture a "broader audience", who weren't interested to begin with. You know why mario succeeded? Because it stayed animated and followed source material to a T. It was just another mario game but a movie. This will flop, it doesn't matter who does it.

Link talks in every game, so I don't see why they'd just make him mute in the movie for the first time ever for no reason at all. PS. Mario games don't show you Mario's dialogue either. But Mario talks, we all know it. Link talks.

Zelda fans are going to be very critic about it. I think that it would have been better to start with an animated version before moving to a live action. It is a bit easier in animation since it’s easier transfer from a video and get viewers used to the idea of a movie and not a video game and characters looking/behaving little different than the game. Get the expected magical creatures and items without looking too silly as is an animated film. It is hard enough to move from animation to life action. I do trust Nintendo to make the best decision as Zelda is one of their best games.

I don’t think that live action is a bad idea, I just think animation is a great one, your saying that live action can convey it just as well as animation and I understand that I just feel that there is no respect for animation and live action is forced so that it can be considered a “real movie”. I think that it’s still possible with live action and probably will be great if they have a good art direction and tone. But I’m scared that because it is live action they are going to try and make it griddy or just make it a crappy Lotr knock of. I feel animation is more safe but it can be really amazing if they pull it off with live action.

Here me out what if the Zelda movie is about linkle rather than link she would probably be an easier character to adapt since she doesn’t come with all the expectations and pressure of getting link right No one would really care about how linkle is portrayed since people don’t really care about her so it’s less stressful to adapt because she’s a blank slate they can mold for the movie also she talks I can see Nintendo going this direction to avoid controversy Legend of Zelda is more comparable to King Arthur mythology which a lot have great adaptations that they can use as inspiration The fact that this was being planned the whole time explains why the mario movie didn’t have Zelda Easter eggs Does that imply that all of the Nintendo ip that were referenced are gonna be stuck with universal and the ones that weren’t acknowledged are free agents? It’s live action because it’s gonna be a more mature movie that’s the speculation Also I trust Nintendo Miyamoto has been working on this movie since 2013 that’s longer than even the mario movie tells you all you need to know at how dedicated miyamoto is to this They picked the people they picked because they want people that can be controlled Wes ball seems like a Zelda fan tho in 2010 he said he wants to do a Zelda movie in the style of James Cameron’s avatar As for the speaking situation Make link canonically deaf and have him communicate using ASL throughout the movie Problem solved It’ll be an original story that’s an amalgamation of every game like the mario movie did Most likely Nintendo for their ip seem to be follow the stigma that animation is for all ages and live action is more mature Either that or they are just doing what they want for each project Tom Blyth Or Robbie Kay or Milo manheim or Austin butler for older link Walker scobel for younger link Florence Pugh for older Zelda McKenna grace for younger Zelda Hugh Hackman or Oscar Isaac or Henry cavil or Simu liu for ganondorf Even Vincent d’onfrio as ganondorf play him like it similar to kingpin he would kill it Akwafina as Navi Taylor swift as Zelda is my joke pick but I see the Vision Patrick Stewart as deku tree Zendaya as Urbosa Vincent dnofrio as Daruk Tom Holland as prince Sidon Tom Hiddleston as rivali Angelina Jolie as midna Y’all love to cherry-pick and use avi as a scapegoat as if there aren’t other people working on those movies that have more creative control than him because that would have been too safe which was a common criticism of the mario movie that it was safe Nintendo loves to take risks and experiment with different styles Why is this any different TRUST NINTENDO the phases of production, an average Hollywood studio movie from beginning of development to the end of post-production typically takes around 4 to 5 years Keep in mind in 2010 Wes ball tweeted he wants the next movie that’s like James Cameron’s avatar to be Zelda We don’t know whether or not his vision has changed since then tho DEREK DID NOT WRITE THE FINAL MOVIE FOR RISE OF SKYWALKER YES HE WROTE A SCRIPT BUT THATS NOT THE SCRIPT THEY USED Detective Pikachu is a masterpiece and clearly having had experience working with a Nintendo ip miyamoto felt comfortable with Derek animation is too safe people wanted Nintendo to take bigger risks that was a criticism of the mario movie that it was too safe I applaud them for taking risks and experimenting with different styles for each ip For a composer maybe Phil Collins or John Williams or bring Bryan Tyler back

I really hope this will be a "Zelda" movie and not a "BotW/TotK" movie. I've always related Zelda with LotR which is why I'm actually hopeful for it. I didn't like the last two games that much especially TotK as they didn't have compelling stories and very bare bones puzzles, dungeons and enemies and Link is a playable stone who never emotes unless he's cooking or getting molested by big ladies. And since Ghibli has only been associated with Zelda since BotW, I never really cared about that idea.
